How is it there are people that will note they have Dissociative Identity Disorder and still call Steven/Jake personalities of Marc’s? Refer to them as merely pieces of Marc that fell off or that he decided to chip away at himself? Say that they have a broken or fractured mind when IN THE SHOW Steven himself says they are not?

Also just. The amount of times I read something even mildly engaging only to be disappointed because every time the boys talk with each other it’s solely through mirrors or puddles. It’s one of the things that bugs me the most, because you gotta realize at some point that that is a very Hollywood/visual media trick. They do it in the show because it’s a visual medium and they want to not only visually show who is speaking, but attach facial expressions and body movements that we wouldn’t get if they kept it to dubbed-over inner thoughts. I’m not saying I agree with depicting it that way, but I am saying I understand why it was done. 

Are there systems that communicate via reflections? Possibly. Every system is different! I’m not saying nix it entirely or your depiction is bad, either, just that it is not something they would likely do all the time and certainly is not required for them to communicate with each other. 

Consider this: DID is borne of continued trauma as a child, often (and certainly in Marc’s case) abuse. It’s a means of survival. Talking out loud to your reflection is a very noticeable thing, something that puts a target on your back that anybody but especially an abuser might use against you as a means to inflict more abuse. So it would make sense that if the Moon Knight system wanted to talk to each other like that, they would choose to do so only in private moments where they were safe from prying eyes and ears as a security measure.

Moon Knight is a fantasy version of DID. It’s what DID might look like in a comic book universe, and of course a lot of things look different in a comic book universe! 

There is nothing wrong with people writing fanfic or creating fanart that is completely cannon compliant in that it continues to use the whole mirror communication thing. If people want to create fanworks that are more cannon divergent so that they are more realistic, that’s cool too. 

I hadn’t thought about it from the viewpoint of people being canon compliant. That’s a very valid take and I realize that some of my frustration has been misdirected.

I would like to clarify that these are not my words, they are borrowed from the ways I have seen reviewers of Moon Knight and similar chats on YouTube and from irl peers discussing it. In fact I had written this after just having watched a YouTuber use all of them (personalities, broken, etc.) in a way that rubbed me wrong by just how bleak he was making it sound.

There was specifically a scene in Lemire where the police had bagged the fucking stick-on stache as evidence and were like “why were you wearing a fake mustache????” as part of the interrogation it was a trip.
