med people are so annoying "This family's 8 year old child who was about to go through a major surgery and kept crying that she was hungry so they pitied her and gave her food, she then had a heart attack in the surgery. They're so stupid 😒" girl they didn't know that could happen or why it happens. it takes so little time to explain to them that will happen instead of telling them "no food" with no explanation 10 times
"Before surgery, your body’s reflexes that protect your airway are relaxed by anesthesia. If there’s food or liquid in your stomach, it will near certainly come back up and go into your lungs, which can cause choking, a severe lung / heart infection or even a heart attack. That’s called aspiration, and it is life-threatening. It's hard, but it's only a single day to prevent near certain death. Not eating or drinking beforehand massively lowers the risk and helps prevent these life threatening situations under anesthesia." <- TIP: patients have brains which allows them to receive information just like you
I have four kids. I’ve had one or another of them need some kind of surgical procedure that requires anesthesia four or five times over the past 15 years.
This Tumblr post is the first time someone has explained to me *why* I couldn’t feed them before those instances.
I’m not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.
i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.
every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.
not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.
"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!

Sickening Update
Sleep Medicine diagnosed me with Idiopathic Hypersomnia even though by all qualifications I meet every criteria for type 2 narcolepsy. Deciding factor was HLA blood test even though most cases of narcolepsy are NOT genetic but acquired. A little peeved bc I don't think IH takes into account all my symptoms but treatment is the same.
Prescribed 100mg Modafinil. Will see how it goes helping me stay awake
So my sister wants to start sewing more, because
a. She’s 5′ 11″ and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.
b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and it’s difficult to find natural fiber clothes that aren’t made of cotton
c. She’s a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance
So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.
And recently she asked “So where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isn’t polyester” and mom was like ‘go ask your sister’
And I, of course, crashed into the group text like “GET A PEN I HAVE WEBSITES FOR U” and honestly I’m thrilled about this
“Where did u get all this”
“Bets, u know I’m a 15th degree blackbelt of buying shit on the internet”
“oh yeah tru”
Op can may we inquire about the website list
Linen; https://www.graylinelinen.com/
cotton and Silk thread; https://redrockthreads.com/
Linen thread and wool fabric; https://burnleyandtrowbridge.com/ (they’ve got wool stuffs and worsted wool fabric for $15 a yard! I just got three yards of navy worsted wool I’m making a constellation winter skirt from)
More linen thread and wool; https://wmboothdraper.com/ (just ordered wool broadcloth to make a coat)
Silk fabric (THE best place to get silk lining fabrics and raw silk fabric):https://www.dharmatrading.com/
A varying assortment of wool and silk and cotton and even some leather, use coupon code spring2020 for 50% off your full order, worked yesterday when I bought some stuff there; https://metrotextilesnyc.com/
Wool. You want wool coating for under $20 a yard? Sure you do. It’s here. Not a huge variety of colors, most are black or brown, but hey https://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/Catalog?refinementIds=4096748&Keyword=wool&pageSize=16
I don’t know a lot about sewing, but I want to make or have my mom make some linen pants & shirts for when I’m watering, because it gets to 105 here and we have mosquitos so I need to be covered. What type of linen do I buy? Also, linen pajama shorts, yes/no?
(I’ve been wearing my renfaire pants which are a linen mix, I think. But the frikking mosquitos that hide in the tomatoes get my arms)
Medium weight is what I’d go with.
And linen pajama shorts is a HARD yes.
Renaissance Fabrics is good for all sorts of things
Mood doesn’t specialize in natural fabrics but they do have basically every fabric ever made so
For wools, I cannot recommend Woolsome enough! They’re a bit more expensive then the above links, but they have a spectacular range of colours and weights, as well as diamond pattern and herringbone weaves. They also have a range of linens, though not as extensive.
Historical fabrics for re-enactors
Tiedtohistory.com has sheer voile linen
The Linen Lab has a variety of weaves, weights, and colors available
Period Fabric has a variety of wools, but switch to the full website if you’re on mobile

"it's just growing pains" -> "you're too young for that to hurt that bad" -> "you just need to get in better shape" -> "welcome to being old, everyone is in pain"
everyone shut da fuck up this is the only thing that matters
hair and nails are recovering from propranolol. one of my ring fingernails was peaked at almost 45 degrees along the length of the nail, all sorts of splintering and clubbing and weird shit going on. i used to be one of those long nails people who just grew them naturally so this was a HUGE indicator of something being really really wrong. the buckling, peaking and folding in the nailbeds seems to be REALLY straightened out, and my hair has a line of demarcation about 2-3inches away from my scalp where follicles clearly woke back up about half a year ago, so the tmeline adds up. i believe the dermatitis on the hands is going to be the hardest one to fix, but it's better i thnk.
IF YOU ARE ON BETA BLOCKERS: pay attention to your hair, skin and nails. beta blockers can cause telogen effluvium due to a weird way the molecules shrink and expand while metabolizing into your tissues, it causes balding, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, itchiness, nail breakage and dformation, and on and on. this usually happens months or years after you started the beta blockers, it is not easy to spot! it builds up slowly over time. continue takng your beta blockers if they are helping you! IF you notice hair loss or skin problems, it might be the beta blockers though! just be aware they have the potential to cause those problems. not everyone gets those problems! if you get balding or skin problems on beta blockers, the problems will reverse once you go off beta blockers (wean slowly, do not ever cold turkey a beta blocker). doctors know about this, its been in the literature forever, they just dont consider it very important.

hello ADHD-havers, if you use Notion, I have found the best Notion template-maker of all time maybe - I am extremely resistant to premade Notion templates generally, but I find these well- rather than over-designed and genuinely useful. in particular the meal planning one is helping me a great deal on a daily basis
caveat: most of these are in Japanese, a language I do not speak, but ! are fairly intuitive (and automated translation has been enough to figure out what I can't figure out by clicking around). the meal planning one is available in English !

life is better when you're not malnourished btw
My wedding dress arrived today and I tried it on and it fits so well and has room if I get fatter and its SO PRETTY AND SO SO GREEN AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH
told my partner I was going to get in bed which I do usually an hour before I sleep so it's designated pre sleep horizontal time and asked if they would join and they said later and then I made an involuntary sound I can only describe as the whine of a wet sad dog bc I didn't wanna go alone and they burst out laughing bc I sounded Soooo pathetic but in a cute and endearing way (their words) and like yeah lately I really am the wet dog in the relationship which they agreed and now they're getting ready to join me in bed so. Wet Dog (1) doom scrolling (0)
It is kinda funny that there’s a whole genre of post that’s like “I wish it was normalized to do [extremely transgressive & radical thing].” And I mean often to an extent I agree but at the same time you can tell the post is sort of made with the intention to both retain the social coolnessTM of doing said transgressive and radical thing while also wishing it was like. easier to do it. It’s just kinda funny. Unfortunately if you want the laurels of being counterculture you do kinda have to put in the legwork. If it’s easy it’s just Culture.
Saw a post this morning that said verbatim “shocking messy experimental art should be more accepted” LOL.
I hate that when you’re stressed enough your body just starts falling apart. I think it should realize you’re already stressed and don’t need that and start functioning better actually

literally taking any tips on calming muscle pain / burning btw. What are we disabled girlies trying these days?
I think I'm either having magnesium deficiency or some b vitamin deficiency or possibly both that is causing my muscle pain. I took a b12 megadose and it just kicked in and calmed some of the pain. But I won't be able to know for sure until my intake with my new PCP in late June. Just going to have to fuck around and try shit until then.
