Imagine seeing an interesting beetle keep confidently walking up to random other bugs trying to fight them, losing, and then trying again. That's weird enough to be interesting. You got nothing better to do so you watch it go. It gets flipped over so you take a little straw and help it upwards again, so it gets up and skitters to go fight yet another strange bug and lose. But it lives and keeps going. You keep watching this crazy little creature. There's a puddle in the way it's going, so you put a stick over the puddle so it won't drown because you want to see what dumb thing it will try next. It falls off the stick so you get another straw to gently nudge it out of the water. Determined, the beetle gets back on its five or six little feet and keeps going.

I think that's what it's like from the other side, whenever there's a legendary hero who is favoured by a god. You are a cool, shiny bug, determined to do strange and inadvisable weird shit, and they want to know what the hell you're planning to do next.

I watched an insane amount of TikTok and other short form videos for the story I'm writing right now. I gotta say, afterwards, I found myself picking up my phone and opening the apps, almost unconsciously. I was walking and I thought about watching some vids at the same time. I was on hold to the ATO... maybe some videos.

I also happen to specialise in gambling addiction (although I'm not practicing in that area right now), and all I could fucking think about was how these fucking apps were conditioning me in the same fucking way gambling apps do. To be constantly plugged in, consuming. To not even think about just picking it up and having a look. To feel bored when I wasn't watching them, to think about watching them when I wasn't watching them....

That shit is fucking evil.

I deleted it. I'm not exposing myself to that.

That shit will fry your dopamine/reward system so fucking bad you will never read a book or watching a movie again without it.

Love yourself and your potential enough to put that fucking shit away. Watch longer form things that require focus and engagement. Listen to podcasts and audiobooks. Read books. DO ANYTHING BUT CONSUME SHORT FORM CONTENT IN AN UNSTRUCTURED WAY.

If you MUST consume it (I'm sure people will be like 'but my classmates' or 'but my own channel'.... etc), do it in a siloed and structured way. 30 minutes between x time and x time on x day. Focus on it. Don't eat and do it. Watch each short form video to completion. Engage critically with the content. ANd never watch them first thing in the morning or last thing at night.

PLEASE. From a gambling professional, short form videos ping your SAME circuitry and you will fuck up your life and your brain so badly if you don't put up guardrails for yourself.

#YouTube has a setting so you can limit the amount of time you can watch shorts each day before it cuts off #although i really wish it would let you just turn them off instead #every time i open youtube and it auto opens a random short even tho i don't even watch shorts i feel violent

genuinely I'm so sick of people wanting all fiction to be ethical. can we all just get a little gross with it. the point of fiction is that it's not real. we can be unethical in fiction; same goes with being perverted with fiction, being unrealistic with fiction, and being grotesque with fiction. not all fiction has to be ethical, not every character has to be ethical, and that's okay. can we stop with the puritanism. be gross. be unrealistic. be whatever. if I don't like it it's not my business as long as we're all clear that its fictional.
