jes, i need you to know your impact... i followed you early in the heated rivalry craze and then became increasingly fascinated by sidgeno bc of your blogging. fell into a deep dive of men's hockey rpf and now god help me... i care about the sport... after a childhood spent around evil hockey players, no less! i'd foresworn the whole thing! what's worse is that i have essays forming in my head about hockey, rpf, disability in professional sport, etc, and i fear i might need to start writing down my thoughts.
what have you done to me!! i cannot articulate how Not Into Sport i was prior to this! anyway if you have any books u can recommend about hockey so i can read them for my Essays, please do... i guess...
I’m so delighted for you!! and cannot wait to read any and all essays you might write!! most of my hockey book reading has been limited to books about how toxic juniors culture is (for research reasons) but I bet there is lots of interesting work out there. I think(?) @talahui made a rec list a while back and might have book recs to share, and others should feel free to chime in.
hi anon -- I also have a preoccupation with disability in sport -- particularly tied to TBIs and CTE -- so feel free to shoot me a message if you ever get stuck on something because I might have random articles tucked away depending on what you're looking for.
More broadly, here are some posts that have collected hockey books that might be of interest:
@starrynet 's rec list of fiction/non-fiction + more recs in the replies/reblogs my rec list for an earlier jes anon requesting hockey writing @sequestering 's rec list for the same anon
you can also dig around my cte tag and find links to articles that would likely tie into your interest on disability, but a few articles as a jumping off point:
Eric Lindros is worried about everyone's concussions but his own | Michael Rosenberg Enforcers: Soul on Ice | Kent Russell [this essay rewired my brain] ‘What hurts now?’ For retired NHL goalies, the answer is often: everything | Scott Cruickshank [non-paywalled link] John Branch wrote a brilliant book called Boy on Ice, but this interview on NPR talks about some of the disabling aspects of hockey, specifically for athletes in an enforcer role TSN's The Problem of Pain on painkiller abuse in pro hockey (video)
& while this is not hockey, I pulled a few sections (+1) from Michael Bennett's memoir that align a lot with your interest around disability and sport.
DOES ANYONE HAVE THE TWT LINK TO THIS
unfortunately claude giroux is just the guy of all time. enemy of the state and by state I mean the western half of pennsylvania. these days he is known primarily for a) never winning anything and b) being eerily good at making pigeon noises. as a teenager he had to pick between going pro at hockey and going pro at bowling. when he was 21 he moved in w a recently divorced father of three a decade his senior and regularly picked up the man's kids from elementary school. once got arrested for grabbing a male cops ass on canada day. met his current wife while playing beer pong w both his wrists in casts. the only reason his dick is not on the internet is a conveniently placed beer can. gets constantly bullied by his infant teammates who love to wear shirts w his face printed on them and zero context. his hometowns junior hockey team love him so much they switched their logo to a picture of him as a lumberjack. he used to (?) own two dogs who look exactly like him. he once sent out joint family christmas cards w the guy he lived with where they used a portmanteau of their last names. his wife's name is pronounced ryan. he is obsessed w grilled cheese sandwiches. the most goody two shoes golden boy poster child of hockey hates his ass w a vengeance. he is franco-canadian but he is Not from québec. he is ginger. he is lying about his height. during the 2024-25 nhl season his car got stolen twice within 3 months. he loves shania twain and likes wearing pink. he used to go into the eagles dressing room and ask to arm wrestle random football players. he is one of less than 60 out of 700+ active NHL players to wear a neck guard and it makes him look like a slutty dilf in a turtleneck.
not only that theres also a kid's song about what a guy named claude giroux could possibly do as his day job! not only is he a noted muse for the arts he inspires Range

Like if you’re a #scorpio fan, reblog if you’re a #pittsburgh pirates fan.
currently storing as much from the 2025-2026 penguins as i find and i don't remember seeing these posted directly here, so--taylor haase's survey says from dkpitt on 'who would you trust for a haircut' and 'favorite childhood tv show':
Survey Says: Who would you trust for a haircut?
(january 1 2026)
The best "Survey Says" questions are always the ones where I ask players to consider their teammates for various scenarios.
This one was a fun one -- I asked players to imagine a hypothetical scenario where they need a haircut, and for some reason the only people around are their teammates. Who are you trusting with the scissors?
Here's how players (and some now-former Penguins, naturally) decided.
Noel Acciari: “I was thinking about picking a younger guy, because they'd be too afraid to mess it up. I feel like Arty could do it. I trust Arty.”
Harrison Brunicke: “My actual pick would be Dumba.”
Ryan Graves: “Oh, Jesus. Not one of them. Absolutely not. Maybe Kris Letang. Maybe.”
Brett Kulak: “Maybe Brazeau, he can just shave my head. He buzzes his well, I’d just ask for a buzz cut. He knows how to do it.”
Kevin Hayes: “Tanger. He has good hair, he’s into nice things. He has good style.”
Arturs Silovs: “I don’t know who is creative enough for it, maybe Karl. He’s got good hair.”
Connor Clifton: “Dumba. He could fix this mess. He keeps it together up there.”
Joona Koppanen: “Tanger always has nice flow, he’s a safe bet.”
Sidney Crosby: “There's a couple guys, I think, who do their own hair right now. So I might have to go with them. I think Brazeau does. I’d go Braz, because obviously he’s got a little experience.”
Tommy Novak: “Nobody. Nobody. Maybe Letang.”
Parker Wotherspoon: “Let’s see, do I want to go conservative or crazy? I think Brazeau cuts his own hair, but he has a buzz cut. Rust would be pretty safe, you know? You’ve got to pick a guy that wouldn’t put a hole in your head. Like, he’d care. I think Rusty.”
Bryan Rust: “Rickard Rakell, if he has two good hands.”
Ryan Shea: “I would say Heinen or Dumba. I feel like Heino, because he would try his hardest to do his best. Some of the guys in here, if you ask them for a haircut, they would probably mess you up on purpose.”
Connor Dewar: “I think Tommy Novak would be really careful with scissors.”
Jack St. Ivany: “Tanger, probably. He’s got good hair and he’s got good taste. He could do it.”
Rickard Rakell: “I would trust Karl, I think.”
Ville Koivunen: “(Tomasino), and I have no idea why.”
Phil Tomasino: “I’d say Letang, he has nice hair.”
Rutger McGroarty: “Let’s see … who has sick hands? I would say Hayesy, Kindy, and Koivy. Oh, and Karl.”
Sam Poulin: “Oh, boy, probably no one. I'm pretty picky with what I want for my hair, so I would have to go to a real barber shop for that.”
Tristan Jarry: “Probably Brazeau. He’s got a consistent haircut all the time.”
Justin Brazeau: “I would say all of them with my haircut. I don’t think it would be too hard. I’d trust Lizzo, I don’t think he’d do anything too stupid.”
Blake Lizotte: “I’d say Dewar. We play together a lot, I trust him. He’s got pretty solid hair, too.”
Danton Heinen: “Probably Gravy. He’s got some longer hair, kind of like mine. He would care. He wouldn’t want to screw it up, he’s pretty trustworthy.”
Ben Kindel: “I’d say Tanger or Karl, just because they have some good hair themselves.”
Sergei Murashov: “Probably someone from the equipment guys, like Tags. TAGS! Could you make a haircut for me? (Taglianetti: 'I could do better than what you’ve got.') Yeah, I think so.”
Anthony Mantha: “Oh, I don’t care. Any of them. They could shave me, it doesn’t really matter for me.”
Matt Dumba: “I’d let none of these guys touch my hair. I’d give myself a haircut before I let any of these guys touch it.”
Kris Letang: “Oh … Gravy. He seems like he’s the one that would not play games.”
Erik Karlsson: “Probably Kindel. Because if he f—ked it up, I would kill him.”
Survey Says: Favorite childhood TV show?
(may 16 2026)
This penultimate edition of Survey Says from this season comes from a suggestion by subscriber Ron Vassel, who wanted to know about the Penguins players' favorite TV shows from their childhood.
Here's how they answered.
Arturs Silovs: “It’s a long time ago, but the classic was 'Tom and Jerry,' that’s a big one. They don’t speak, so the language didn’t matter. Then came in 'Adventure Time.'”
Tommy Novak: ”'SpongeBob.'”
Sidney Crosby: “How old are we talking? Like if I were to remember when I started watching TV, I would say 'Inspector Gadget.'”
Stuart Skinner: “'Suite Life of Zack and Cody.'”
Kris Letang: “I didn’t really have one, I just watched the sports news.”
Noel Acciari: “I used to watch 'Rocket Power,' 'Recess.' That's a tough one, because you get 'Rugrats,' too. Probably all of those.”
Harrison Brunicke: “When I was really young I liked 'Ben 10.' (Matt Dumba: What?) 'Ben 10.' You ever see it? (Dumba: No?) It’s so good. Or 'SpongeBob.'”
Matt Dumba: “I have to go with 'Recess.' (turns to Brunicke) You don’t know about that sh—? (Brunicke: No, I don’t know 'Recess'). Oh, jeez.”
Rutger McGroarty: “'The Flash.'”
Brett Kulak: “I’ll say 'Recess.'”
Sam Poulin: “'The Simpsons' or 'Johnny Test.'”
Jack St. Ivany: “'Friends,' at an appropriate age. When I was really young, 'Drake and Josh' or 'iCarly.'”
Bryan Rust: “Probably 'Rocket Power.' 'Recess' was up there, but 'Rocket Power.'”
Joona Koppanen: “I’d say 'DuckTales.'”
Erik Karlsson: “'Two and a Half Men.' As an older kid!”
Rickard Rakell: “I think as I got older, I watched a lot of 'Two and a Half Men' because it was on the TV when I came home from school. We didn’t have that many channels.”
Blake Lizotte: “'SpongeBob.' I got into 'Rocket Power' for awhile. That was a good one.”
Sergei Murashov: “Just cartoons, I didn’t watch too much TV but I especially like Russian cartoons. (Me: Like 'Booba?') Yeah! (Derek Army) called me 'Booba' last year because his kids love 'Booba.' But it’s not the best, there’s much better in Russia.”
Anthony Mantha: “'Toy Story.' It’s a movie, OK, but it still counts because you watch them on the TV.”
Ryan Graves: “I loved 'Recess.'”
Justin Brazeau: “'Suits.' (Me: As a kid?) I wasn’t a huge TV kid until I started getting into junior when 'Suits' came out.”
Connor Clifton: “'SpongeBob' and 'Rugrats,' those are the two I remember.”
Parker Wotherspoon: “As a kid, there's a ton, honestly. 'Wizards of Waverly Place.' 'Zoey 101' was up there. 'Hannah Montana' was huge. 'Boy Meets World' was big. Oh yeah, and 'Suite Life on Deck.'”
Ryan Shea: “When I was young young, I was a big MTV guy. Even going back, it was 'Cribs,' all that.”
Connor Dewar: “I’m drawing a blank, I can’t even remember.”
Tristan Jarry: “Probably the Discovery Channel.”
Kevin Hayes: “'One Tree Hill.'”
Ben Kindel: “'Seinfeld.' But as a child? I don’t even know.”
Ville Koivunen: “'The Simpsons,' I watched that a lot when I was young. It was in English, but with the Finnish text.”
his luscious locks.
scouting combine questions are starting "what if two guys were on the moon and one smashed the other one over the head with a rock would that be fucked up or what"
"if you and a teammate were on the moon and the teammate had water and you didn't would you smash him over the head with a rock."
"would you still love your teammate if he was a worm. or would you let him scorch on the sidewalk. be honest"
there is no way for danny to lose. either he gets a great star center, or he entirely fucks anaheim's cap situation and ability to re-sign players. AND in the process, he's thrown a bomb at all the teams who have young star forwards they'll need to sign in the next few years... he really said what if i did some psychological warfare and (as a fun side effect) (just for me) (i deserve it), ensured a bunch of young players got bigger salaries at their next negotiation? that could be fun i think. im Old Gay Danny Briere. let's go to war

this is fucking insane. bonuses are paid at the moment of signing (or right at the beginning of the season, july first) and are lockout proof (regular salary is paid periodically throughout the season). this forces the ducks to also match this payment format which is just a fucking crazy salary format if you want to save money.
JESUSUDDHDBX
