Organize. Unions work.

I'm still so proud of this one. It was the first thing I wrote after 9/11, when everything was raw. It's one of my favourite depictions of Death, as well.

For the full timeline and tons of information on the HarperCollins strike, hereâs the long post.
It has been FIFTY-SIX days since the HarperCollins Union went on strike⌠and Harper has at last agreed to sitting down with an independent, mutually agreed upon mediator to at least discuss the Unionâs demands.
What this means:
- The pressure is working. Brian Murray and the leadership at HarperCollins have spent the last fifty-six days lying, spinning, hiring scabs, and doing everything except speaking to their union employees. That theyâre even willing to talk now means the steady pushback has made things uncomfortable.
Therefore: Keep writing to [email protected]! Keep supporting the strike fund! Keep buying your books through the unionâs Bookshop page! And keep sharing the unionâs posts online and in your in-person communities!
- The strike IS NOT OVER. No agreement has been reached. Do not post reviews of Harper titles, accept work for any of their imprints, submit manuscripts for consideration, or in any way cross that picket line.
Additionally: The union is holding two separate rallies for folks in New York. The first, on January 31, is for industry professionals. The second, on February 2, is outside the NewsCorp HQ and is for everyone. If youâre not in the metro area and canât attend, Iâm sure folks would appreciate online support. New York is cold and gross and wet right now.
This is not the time to ease up, but rather to push HarperCollins, News Corp, and Rupert Murdoch even harder to cede to the beyond reasonable demands of their employees and to put an end to this absolute farce that they initiated.

âThe performance advantages from social factors, training and access to equipment are far greater than testosterone,' paper concludes
A report on transgender women athletes in elite sport has found that if UCI [Union Cycliste Internationale] rules are adhered to, there is currently no substantial evidence of any biological advantages for trans women competing in elite womenâs sport.
It found there was little evidence that biomedical factors related to male puberty such as lung size, bone density and hip-to-knee joint angle predict an unfair advantage. But some evidence that social factors like nutrition, training and access to equipment do.
These are just some of the key findings listed in an 86-page report titled Transgender Women Athletes and Elite Sport: A Scientific Review, which was published in late 2022 and commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), an ethical sport advocacy non-profit with a vision of fair, safe, accessible, and inclusive sport for everyone.
The inclusion of trans women in elite womenâs sport has been a hot button issue of late with high profile instances such as Emily Bridgesâ attempt to compete in the UK sparking concern and upset on all sides. While the inclusion of trans women has led to protests by those who worry that cis women (the term for women born anatomically female) are at a competitive disadvantage at some U.S. races.
However, the report concluded that âthe fears that cis women need be protected from trans women in elite sport are unsubstantiated and misplaced.
âWhat threatens womenâs elite sport, for cis and trans women, is not trans women, but is rather misogyny in the form of underfunding, non-parity in participation and leadership, inequitable sport space allocation/access, and a range of sporting opportunities not afforded to women (cis women and trans women) in equitable ways.â
Let's talk about a book that gives sheer joy and love as we toe-loop into 2023. Check out Check Please by Ngozi Ukazu.
A delightful write-up in CBR!
ITâS NOT âPEEKEDâ MY INTEREST
OR âPEAKEDâ
BUT PIQUED
âPIQUED MY INTERESTâ
THIS HAS BEEN A CAPSLOCK PSA
THIS IS ACTUALLY REALLY USEFUL THANK YOU
ADDITIONALLY:
YOU ARE NOTÂ âPHASEDâ. YOU AREÂ âFAZED.â
IF IT HAS BEEN A VERY LONG DAY, YOU AREÂ âWEARYâ. IF SOMEONE IS ACTING IN A WAY THAT MAKES YOU SUSPICIOUS, YOU AREÂ âWARYâ.
ALL IN âDUEâ TIME, NOT âDOâ TIME
âPER SEâ NOT âPER SAYâ
THANK YOU
BREATHE - THE VERB FORM IN PRESENT TENSE
BREATH - THE NOUN FORM
THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE
WANDER - TO WALK ABOUT AIMLESSLY
WONDER - TO THINK OF IN A DREAMLIKE AND/OR WISTFUL MANNER
THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE (but oneâs mind can wander)
DEFIANT - RESISTANT DEFINITE - CERTAIN
WANTON - DELIBERATE AND UNPROVOKED ACTION (ALSO AN ARCHAIC TERM FOR A PROMISCUOUS WOMAN)
WONTON - ITâS A DUMPLING THATâS ALL IT IS ITâS A FUCKING DUMPLING
BAWL- TO SOB/CRY
BALL- A FUCKING BALL
YOU CANNOTÂ âBALLâ YOUR EYES OUT
AND FOR FUCKâS SAKE, ITâS NOT âSIKEâ; ITâS âPSYCHâ. AS IN âI PSYCHED YOU OUTâ; BECAUSE YOU MOMENTARILY MADE SOMEONE BELIEVE SOMETHING THAT WASNâT TRUE.
THANK YOU.
*slams reblog*
ITâS âMIGHT AS WELLâ. âMIND AS WELLâ DOES NOT MAKE GRAMMATICAL SENSE.
SLEIGHT - DEXTERITY, ARTIFICE, CRAFT (FROM âSLYâ) SLIGHT - VERY LITTLE, FRAIL, DELICATE
ITâS âSLEIGHT OF HANDâ.
DISCRETE - SEPARATE, DISTINCT, PARTED
DISCREET - SUBTLE, STEALTHY, DIPLOMATIC
BORN= existing as a result of birth

{This is quite helpful. Thank you Rebloggers.}
((adm: I just want to add-
Loose- untight
Lose- opposite of winning))
((ALSO: A fun trick - Affect = Action Effect = End Result ))
There = In that place
Their = belonging to them
canât = a contraction for cannot
cant = a tilt or lean at an angle, usually to accommodate accessibility
Me thinking that this is childâs play and that I know it all already:
Me realising there are some things I didnât already know:
TO- GOING ONE PLACE TOWARDS ANOTHER
TWO- 2, A NUMBER BETWEEN 1 AND 3
TOO- A DESCRIPTIVE WORD, THE MUSIC IS TOO LOUD, THE SHIRT IS TOO LOOSE.
TOO- A DESCRIPTIVE
WORD, THE MUSIC IS TOO LOUD,
THE SHIRT IS TOO LOOSE.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
Iâm gonna add
ROGUE: CRIMINAL/REBEL/VAGRANT/ETC
ROUGE: RED MAKEUP
itâs rogues gallery, guys. Not rouge gallery. Youâre making me think batman has an extensive lipstick collection.
If youâre talking about a weapons CACHE, itâs pronounced cash.
If you say cashay, thatâs how CACHET is pronounced which means prestige and does not mean a collection of items stored together in a hidden/inaccessible place.
NO ONE IS âPREJUDICE"
PEOPLE ARE âPREJUDICEDâ
If heâs not moving, heâs STATIONARY.
If heâs a fucking space pencil, then carry on with STATIONERY.
If itâs wet precipitation falling out of the sky, itâs RAIN
If itâs someone ruling over people, itâs REIGN
If itâs holding back someone from (or getting someone to stop doing) something, thatâs to REIN [them] IN (âŚas if you were using REINS on a horse)
(and oh yeah)
If youâre telling someone theyâre going to have to reconsider an opinion or course of action, then they have ANOTHER THINK COMING
(because âanother thing comingâ makes no damn sense whatsoever unless theyâre in some kind of monster movie, ffs)
Just adding:
HOARD - (n.) a collection of stuff, (vb) to collect a collection of stuff.
HORDE - (n.) a collection, group, mob or host of people, often unruly or barbaric.
PEEL - (n.) the outside skin of fruit, also (archaic n.) a tower house, sometimes spelled PELE; (vb) to remove the outside skin of fruit; by extension, usually as PEEL OFF, to remove clothing, but also (aviation) to break away, one aircraft at a time, from a larger formation.
PEAL - (n.) the sound of several church bells ringing together or in sequence; (vb.) to ring bells in this manner.
BREACH - (n.) a break or opening, usually in a wall; (vb) to make such an opening, also a whale rising clear of the surface of the sea. (The words BREACH and BREAK are distant relatives.)
BREECH - (n.) the bottom end of a gun-barrel, where itâs loaded; also (BREECH PRESENTATION) a baby being born bottom-foremost; also (n. pl.) BREECHES, a historical style of trousers ending just below the knee and (archaic vb) to BREECH, to dress a boy in breeches (adult clothing) for the first time.
English isâŚÂ Complicated.
And my favourite recent one,
It is âTO ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSESâ and not âTO ALL INTENSIVE PURPOSESâ.
THEIR - this one is about people because it has an âIâ in it
THERE - this one is about locations because it has âhereâ in it
THEYâRE - this is the one with two words joined together but the apostrophe is pretending to be the letter âAâ.
âPenn cautiously reached out and touched the dragonâs scales. She had expected them to be hot but they were curiously cool.
But he was real. He was an actual, live dragon and right in this very moment she could feel his leathery scales under her hand and the power of twin hearts beating in his chest. Penn felt something in her mind slipping â adjusting and rearranging to make room for the previously impossible.â
The last sentence here, though. đ¤Ż
So many people are unable or unwilling to let their mind âslipâ, to create space for things previously considered as âimpossibleâ. So many folk right now are holding on to âitâs always been that wayâ.

Earthrise 1: Historic Image Remastered : âOh my God! Look at that picture over there! Hereâs the Earth coming up. Wow is that pretty!â Soon after that pronouncement, 50 years ago today, one of the most famous images ever taken was snapped from the orbit of the Moon. Now known as âEarthriseâ, the iconic image shows the Earth rising above the limb of the Moon, as taken by the crew of Apollo 8. But the well-known Earthrise image was actually the second image taken of the Earth rising above the lunar limb â it was just the first in color. With modern digital technology, however, the real first Earthrise image â originally in black and white â has now been remastered to have the combined resolution and color of the first three images. Behold! The featured image is a close-up of the picture that Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders was talking about. Thanks to modern technology and human ingenuity, now we can all see it. (Historical note: A different historic black & white image of the Earth setting behind the lunar limb was taken by the robotic Lunar Orbiter 1 two years earlier.) via NASA
