If youāre ever feeling down and powerless, remember that Josef Stalin was only about 5ā²3ā³ tall (160 cm), so if youāre even the slightest bit taller than that, just think of how a terrifying dictator wouldāve had to tilt his chin up to look you in the eye and I bet youāll feel a little better.
so pictures under the cut
This is what happens when you hydroplane into the back of another car while going 55-60 mph.Ā
I was driving to work in the morning, and it had been raining. I came around a curve. Traffic had stopped way sooner than I expected, and I slammed my brakes. They locked, I hydroplaned, screech, wham, fwump, shit shit shit.
Would you believe me if I told you I came out of this completely unscathed?Ā Because I did.
I didnāt even suffer whiplash. I had no broken bones. I had soft tissue and muscle injury to my chest, which made me sore as hell for a month afterward, but that didnāt even result in visible bruising. Immediately after impact, I undid my seatbelt, shoved open the door as wide as I could, and walked away.
My aunt who works for General Motors looked at the pictures and said that, from what she could tell, it looked like every factor that could have been in play for me to survive, wasĀ in play. I was wearing my seatbelt. I hit front-on and deployed my only airbags. The car obviously absorbed, like, allĀ of the force of impact. But she said that even with all those factors in play, my survival wasnāt a given; I still could have died that day.
I dunno, thank God and the fine engineers at Toyota, I guess. Iām fond of saying that that little Corolla gave her life for mine that day, because if it wasnāt apparent from the pictures, I totaled her.
It did leave me with a small mental scar, you could say. Iāve discovered now that when Iām driving and have to suddenly brake, the sight of the back end of the car ahead of me coming closer makes me experience, even briefly, the same intensity of panic and terror that I felt the day of the crash. So thatās fun. Itās happened just enough times that I think I can pinpoint exactly how it happens.
I know this is really glossing over, but tbh it feels kinda weird to talk about it in depth still. So there you go.Ā
Hereās what I drive now:
And while the Corolla was in my parentsā names, this sweet little Nissan Versa is mine, mine, mine. Under my name, covered by my insurance.Ā
My brother taught me how to drive manual this morning, since he has a car with it.
He said I did pretty good for a first-timer, and that I didnāt stall nearly as much as he thought I was going to. His comment at the end was āYou could probably drive me to the hospital if I was, like, dying in the back seat. Iād have to tell you when to shift, but you could do it.ā
Of course, when we got back to the house, I had to run right out on an errand in my automatic transmission car, and my left foot kept searching for a clutch.
this post is also hilarious because on 5/5 of this year, I totaled said automatic transmission car, and purchased a manual
hang on, Iāll show you the pictures
Confession: Sometimes, when Iām home alone, I walk around the house holding imaginary snakes and birds of prey and pretend Iām doing an educational program with them.
this post is absolutely hilariousĀ in hindsight because the imaginary educational talks I did are basically what Iām getting paid to do now

I had a fantastic day at the Baltimore Aquarium yesterday, courtesy of the rehab clinic I work for!
One of our volunteers works as a keeper and trainer for the birds in their Australia exhibit, so another intern and I got to go behind the scenes with her and see where she works. She explained some of her duties, and all the enrichment and training they do for their animals.Ā
I was in awe, listening to her talk about how the birds are all either trained or in training to voluntarily step onto a scale, present their feet for nail-clipping, go into and out of a carrier or separate enclosure, display their wings, sit calmly while someone palpates their abdomen⦠All the while, I kept thinking of the birds at the park I volunteered at last year, and how we would have to chase them into a corner, wrestle them onto a glove, wrangle them onto and off of a scale, wrap them up in a casting jacket to trim their talonsā¦
Thatās the kind of environment I want to work in. An environment where the animals are trained and socialized so that these health-care procedures are as minimally stressful as possible. Itās better for the animals and safer for the people. (Remember how many times I got attacked by different birds at the park? Yeah.) I spent a while talking to her about how to get into the field, and Iām happy to say that, well, Iām basically on the right track.Ā
Later on, I watched a show with the dolphins. When I was younger, the Baltimore Aquariumās dolphin shows were basically just a routine, never-changingĀ ālook at these cool tricksā. You had to buy a separate ticket to view them, and the doors would be closed while the show was in progress.
All of that has changed. The shows are much shorter nowāonly ten or twelve minutesāand have much more variety to them. The one I saw in full was all about husbandry and training techniques. There were three trainers for the four dolphins who were in the show tank, and in betweenĀ ātricksā (a lot of them were fairly natural behaviors, just trained to a cue, and the interpreter explained how each behavior might function in the wild), there was a lot of interacting between human and cetacean. One of the trainer-dolphin pairs seemed to be having a blast with each other, and I really donāt think Iām anthropomorphising too much there.Ā
The show also brought up a lotĀ of points about dolphin conservation, and the interpreter who was talking through it all had a passion and enthusiasm that I knowĀ reached everyone in the stands.
After the show, I hung around until the stadium had cleared out, then started talking to herĀ about how she got into this field. I talked briefly on my own experiences a bit. She acknowledged that itās super-important to have goodĀ ācommunicationā between human and animal, and that you have to make allowances for the individuals.Ā āI mean, itās not like Iām gonna get 500-pound Nani to do something she doesnāt want to do. Iāve spent months developing training plans and had to throw them out in a week because I realized Spirit just doesnāt want to do the behavior I want her to do.āĀ
We talked about the change in the show, and she agreed that this was much better than what it used to be. The new show setup not only emphasizes conservation and education, but also makes both of those much more accessible to visitors.
We got to talking about the future of the dolphins. Thereās been talk over the last year about putting an end to all dolphin shows and retiring them all to a sea pen. In the next five years, theyāre going to completely renovate the dolphin area, and maybe the dolphins will come back, and maybe they wonāt. But if they do, the trainer was saying how thereās been talk of basically doubling the size of the dolphin tank, or maybe more, and having half of it be outdoors. During the day, and in between any shows, the dolphins would be able to go back and forth between halves of their tank as they chose; theyād be brought in if sever weather threatened, for training, and for medical procedures, but otherwise, free rein. Wouldnāt that be great.
Iām still not the biggest fan of keeping cetaceans in captivity, but all things considered, it sounds like these dolphins are getting pretty good care and enrichment, and their keepers are definitely trying to do their best for them. I donāt know too much about dolphin body language either, but I know a couple signs of stress and saw none of them in these girls.Ā
A great trip!
I had occasion to go back through some of my old posts tonight, and I stumbled on this one.
Ah, God, I was so enamored with the Aquarium. And rightfully so. It truly is a magnificent place, full of wonderful people. And that animal husbandry? Itās not just a pretty story they tell visitors. No, itās well and truly how they do their work.
I know this because, just two months ago, I was hired by them.
And itās been an absolute dream come true. Iām not dead, I promise. Iāve just been, among other things, very busy having the best time of my fucking life.

This is a very serious scene but please consider
Svalbard is an archipelago midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. It consists of a number of glacier waterfalls; whales can often be spotted swimming nearby.
@everprosaic and @astralskeleton asked us to take a look at this post. The worry is that the cat is uncomfortable and could hurt itself on the edges of the plastic.Ā
Honestly, Iām not overly concerned about what I can tell from this photoset. Itās entirely possible that the cat put itself in the box of itās own volition - I do know cats that like enclosed spaces, and it would be very hard to force a cat into a box like that. Thereās not much in the way of stress signs like face tension, pulled back lips or tight skin around the eyes and the ears are perky and held normally in every photo. Without more context, Iām not too worried.
The same goes for the edges of the box. For one, they look pretty flexible, and for two, fur works as a buffer. If the cat was really stuck or was rubbing exposed skin on itās face against the edges there might be an issue, but just being in contact with them even with some pressure while moving around is likely fine.
Thanks for the tag and your concern! Itās a good one to have asked about.

hereās something thatās been on my mind: i am so enamored with the concept of the heroās shade and with a link from one generation communicating with another, so i started thinking about what if there was a zelda game where you had to fight the spirit of the past heroes in order to prove yourself as the new hero, and these pics willed themselves into being
What they donāt tell you is that in the Gerudo vernacular āKingā means āthe one who opens jars and grabs things on high shelvesā.
if all the gerudo are women wouldnt they just build the shelves lower
Theyāre not going to waste that kind of prime storage space.
Dosenāt the Gerudo word for king also mean āHe of the tight pantsā? :P
That is a good point, all the Gerudo women wear all that loose flowy fabric but as soon as they add a guy to the team they vacuum-seal him in skintight leather and thigh-high boots.
They seal him for freshness, of course
