like.. maybe i'm reading too much into things, but the guy literally drops to the rust syndicate's pose of deference and declares that his word is his bond (to you/the player) in a show of his respect and admiration (devotion, even, if you want to get a little crazy with it) and he does all that VERY publicly might i add. (yes, in game only the rest of the syndicate are there, but i'm sure some people sheltered inside might have seen or just also been around etc.) the boss bowing down to anyone else has to be a BIG deal along with him showing his cards like that... like i'd be a little irritated also if someone decided to make light of that

ALSO your tag about him meaning everything he says--i haven't reread every line of his, so i wouldn't swear to this in court, but i personally really really like the interpretation that he does, in fact, mean everything he says, and he basically never lies. he'll omit when he needs to, but he tells the truth. tells it so boldly that it seems like a trick. he's got bluffs within bluffs, and he'll make you think yourself in circles to find hidden meanings that are only there if you bring them to the table. i just think it's really cool to think about him making his enemies twist themselves into knots and then going, "whaddya mean? i told ya straight, didn't i?"

i've been brushing up on his dialogue recently for fic research reasons (also my partner has been playing in japanese to see how it compares to english so it's fresh on my dome) and there are.. some things i don't necessarily love or agree with (don't call philippe an idiot 😭) but with like. how much he talks about liking to have fun, at times messing with people, and CERTAINLY his interactions with the player in the beginning, i'm with you 100% on that being his business strategy. dude is all about subverting expectations and having a little fun with it!
