As an infant, Em'het was claimed by an ancient god and raised to become his next vessel. He escaped this fate by faking his death and hiding in the town of Soia, many miles outside the city. He was safe as long as he could keep his magic hidden. And then the strangers came. While the town welcomed them with open arms and worship, Em'het knew the truth: these were not angels but something different. He wasn't sure what, but no matter who or what they are, he needed to get rid of them. Over the course of the series, Em'het learns more about himself, his magic, and different perspectives of the old gods. As his power grows, he discovers a dangerous secret: the thing that makes the gods so powerful, their ability to possess others, is also their greatest weakness. And a vessel who resists their will might be the only way to break the control these gods have over their dominion.

Explores what happens when parents raise their child to be morally righteous and seek the good of others, only to discover that they've done their jobs too well and now have to watch as that child sacrifices themselves over and over in pursuit of those values.

Master Corduff only ever wanted to live a peaceful life, but that's impossible in the military country of Rosen, seemingly constantly at war with someone. This series follows Corduff as well as his three apprentices. Hayes, in search of truth, defects to a terrorist organization after he discovers the family he once thought dead is alive. Boru, the child of prophecy, ventures out into the world to learn what it is he's meant to save, as well as avoid capture or execution at the hands of those who would see the world doomed. Awen seeks to connect with the family she never knew she had in a country she was taken from as a child.

Explores what happens when you turn magic into weapons and children into soldiers, and what happens when those children grow up and try to change a system that might be better off destroyed rather than reformed.

So basically, about 1,000 years ago or so (it's not a hard timeline right now), LOTS of people were born with magic, like it was more uncommon to NOT be born with magic, and all the planets were pretty independent, and people were scattered about, and life was generally pretty good. As humans are bound to do, they were very curious about their magic and how they interacted with crystals, which could hold the magic and perform functions.

Well, there was a group of scientists who had been experimenting for years on giving people with no magic their magic. This really wasn't working; it was making people sick and even killing them in some extreme cases, and their work was about to be shut down because of how people without magic were getting hurt through the experiments. The scientists, in order to save the research, switched tactics and kind of split up depending on what direction they wanted to take it.

Some scientists discovered that if you mixed microcrystals with tattoo ink, you could infuse the tattoos with crystals, and the person without magic could use the magic that was stored in the ink, but it was very limited compared to what people born with magic could do. This would become the basis for the Guardian class in the "modern" era.

Other, less important discoveries were made during this time of desperation, but the really important one was when one scientist (name lost to history) discovered that while a magical person couldn't infuse their magic into a person without magic, they COULD infuse their magic into another magical person. You could force your magic, your soul, into someone else's body and effectively double the magical abilities of the body. The souls within the body would fight for power, and whoever had the stronger will or self-identity would win control of the physical body, while the other person would be trapped and not able to control the body at all. The other physical body of the person who tried to "jump" into the new body would die soon after. Once combined in this way, the power couldn't uncombine, meaning you couldn't separate person A's power from person B to put Person A back in their body.

So in effect, they engineered their immortality because every time their body aged or got sick or got seriously injured, they could find another magical person and "jump" into that person's body. Things were seriously chaotic for a couple of hundred years as all the magical people went to war to protect themselves from getting possessed. It was sort of seen as a "survival of the fittest" kind of thing because no matter who initiated the "possession," it would be whoever was stronger that won control of the body. Like I said, very chaotic, eventually some of the most powerful magic users came out on top and ruled over multiple planets and made agreements with other magic users to make alliances, and then finally they got to the point where they were tired of constantly fighting each other, and there weren't that many magic users left. So the remaining ones formed the Ascended Council, and they worked out how minor gods would be distributed and how planets would be distributed, and they seriously reduced the number of planets they were controlling to keep their power consolidated.
