I thought I got laid off during work today and it happened during a recorded meeting and the recording of my reaction is funny honestly. I look like I'm over-acting for a casting call.
Outlook sends me push notifications on my phone for meetings when it's 15 minutes before the meeting start time
2:50 I'm in an ongoing meeting and I notice my phone buzz. I glance at it
Outlook notification that says "1:1 with [my full first name] [my last name] @3:05"
My only standing 1:1 meeting is with my manager
Not this day of the week, not this time, not titled like this
Ruling that out, for a meeting I did not expect and did not recognize, my next and most immediate assumption was "fuck. fuck it's a layoff snipe. they just put this on my calendar and it's a layoff snipe"
You can see this in my expression as I'm, on camera, frantically pulling up my work calendar
4 seconds into this I suddenly remember the new principal engineer in our org who, a few weeks back, scheduled a flurry of 1:1 meetings with other engineers in the org to meet/break the ice
I had, weeks ago, been like "yeah sure whatever. accept."
Me on camera full mouth-open head-tilt-back "OH" expression
I turned my camera off after another like 4 seconds because my face was not going back to normal
Had meeting with new principal engineer. He used to work on Club Penguin.
May we all know decadence such as this
The new Odyssey adaptation has inevitably gotten people talking about a Muppet version of it, and theyβre frequently suggesting Kermit as Odysseus, Miss Piggy as Penelope.
Iβm sorry but thatβs thinking way too small, hear me out:
We need to have Miss Piggy as Odysseus, and Kermit as Penelope.
Think about itβ¦ whoβs the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a momentβs notice?
It ainβt Kermit
Miss Piggy tied to the mast while Statler and Waldorf heckle her from the sea
But who is the single human cast member in this tale? Who gets to put in an Oscar-worthy performance alongside the Muppets and what role are they to play?
Thereβs no single human, everyone is a Muppet except for one scene. Circe, played by Janice, turns Odysseusβs crew into humans who still behave animalistic and are all played by Academy Award winning actors.
Profanity filters on single-player games are just so... incredibly performative. They don't 'protect' the player from seeing the word (you have to type it in order to activate the filter), the only thing they do is scold the player.
My favorite solution to people who get offended at the things they themselves typed is a disclaimer on a puzzle page that said "If you type profanity you will see it."
Out: Can you pet the dog?
In: Can you name yourself Fuckface McShitass?
It's really funny and jarring when you encounter a profanity filter in a single-player m-rated grown-up game for adults, but I don't think they even make sense in kid's games. If anything I think "If you tell the computer to call you FuckNugget it will do that" is exactly the sort of obvious, low-stakes 'actions have consequences' lesson that's perfect for kids.
"This impacts nobody but yourself, and even then it does not alter gameplay or the intended experience, however we cannot allow it and you need to know we disapprove of offensive language. Anyway have fun in Gorequest 4: The Tittening."
more games could benefit from brutal legend's profanity filter setting I think

having the Aviation Accident Investigations Autismβ’οΈ has actually done wonders for the way I process and respond to my own fuck-ups
And I don't just mean "oh, my little work mistake is actually nothing compared to a fiery crash that kills people," either. The reason commercial flight is so many orders of magnitude safer than any other form of transportation is because after every accident and incident, an independent regulatory body investigated it with the express goal of figuring out exactly what happened, why, and how to prevent the same thing from ever happening againβnot to root out which person deserved the blame or the liability.
It's a simple, shockingly effective idea. It's also worlds away from how most people approach their own mistakes and the mistakes of others.
Because itβs never just one personβs fault. And even when it is, it still isnβt.Β
The sharpest, best-trained pilots make worse decisions when they're tired or sick or stressed out, so there's two of them. The most dedicated and experienced air traffic controllers garble an instruction over the radio sometimes, so pilots are trained to always repeat clearances back to catch misunderstandings quickly. The best and brightest maintenance mechanic still overlooks a screw or misconnects a wire once or twice in her career, so aircraft systems are built with two or three or four layers of redundancy, and pilots are exhaustively trained to deal with failures safely.Β
Everyone eventually has a bad day. Every component breaks down. Every computer gets a bad a Windows update and spirals into a reboot doom loop. If itβs possible for one personβs mistake to domino into a mushroom cloud of a fuckup, then that task is too critical to be one person's sole responsibility. The accident sequence starts with the design of the systemβso how do you improve the system to keep it from happening again?
oh yeah. The βmodern commercial aviation is the safest form of transportβ thing only applies to planes, btw. A helicopter is a beautiful metal horse that wants to break its legs and die so so so badly
'you can smoke whatever drugs you want idgaf' and 'apartment building etiquette is such that i should not be able to instantly smell your rank-ass weed stank through our shared wall' are two sentiments that can both be true
Ahh, itβs back
i have disproportionately strong feelings about this.

Ice beam is low-key a sauceless "standard" move for its type
Earthquake? That is THE ground move. The ground quakes beneath you.
Surf? A giant wave of water that your pokemon can ride. A thunderous tide. Invokes the ocean.
Thunderbolt? Arcing flashes of electricity zap you.
Flamethrower? Fire breath, fire throwing, an arc of propelled flame is classic.
Ice beam? It's a beam. Of ice. Could've been a gust of frigid wind, or a frost incursion, or being entombed in a glacial slab, but noooooo it's a beam. Of ice.
yes but it goes foowaaaa ting ting ting ting ting ting and i really like that part
Fuck you're right post cancelled

okay, so, we were expecting Gigglegirl to just, like, cheer up the citizens of Happy City to return our smiles. we did not expect her to do that to Dr. Frown. our deep and sincere condolences to the Frown family
