one thing about me is iâm gonna go lay down
itâs sooo funny when rude customers encounter employees who can deny them service for the first time.
i was working at a little cafe where I could deny service over bad behavior, harassment etc. & mask mandates had just ended a week before & already people were being weird about me still wearing mineâan N95, the kind shaped kinda like a duckbill.
so this man walked in, looked at me sooo scathingly, laughed at me, and said âdamn. never known a woman to chooseâŚpracticality over looks.â
And I just said, âoh. you can go, youâre not getting a drink.â And he said, âwhat???â
I said, âsir, you just walked in at 6 am & called women impractical and me ugly in one sentence.â
And he was so astonished he didnât even argue he just turned around and left đđđť it was like he suddenly became self aware
One summer I was running ferry rides across a lake so people could see the waterfalls without walking 6 miles when a guy snapped my bra strap as he was boarding the boat. So i immediately threw him off, he started yelling for my manager, my boss cheerfully informed him that, yeah, sheâs the captain of the boat and she can kick off anyone she wants. He goes to storm off, looks expectantly at his girlfriend, and she just goes, âWell, IâM not walking six miles, Michael! Iâll meet you back at the car!â and sits right back down!!!!
The expression on his face when he was told that he couldnât get on the boat, then immediately told that his girlfriend was ditching him? PRICELESS. he just blinked at her and then stormed off like a child. I gave her a free hat and was like maybe rethink this relationshipâŚâŚ.
i once had this fucker come up to order a beer. while i pour it he shows me the wanky fucking chemical structure tattoo on his arm and heâs like âhey. you know what this isâ i was like ânah sorryâ (never cared abt chemistry in school, plus having to look at a some randoâs pretentious tattoo gives me the douche chills). he decides to respond with âheh. you must not read many booksâ
i immediately stop pouring his beer. i reply: âheh. you must not want this beer.â thirsty boy immediately starts groveling like a worm âplease please no i do want the beer im sorry im sorryâ believe me when i say it was one of the most pathetic things ive ever witnessed

I genuinely believe that part of why it has become so normalized to be openly callous and evil in politics is that customer service culture has trained affluent people that they can treat everyone they consider beneath them however they want and still be treated kindly.

Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!
It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.
Like, itâs literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.
So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?
Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.
Oh, and while weâre talking about books, if youâve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely donât go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately theyâre completely free.

Another inside tip from academia: Those papers in really expensive journals that are effectively inaccessible to anyone not in a university network? Depending on the discipline itâs very likely that same paper is on a âpreprintâ server somewhere, with no access restrictions.
Like if you want to read basically any physics, math, or CS paper, arXiv.org will have you covered, because everyone uploads their papers there before submitting to a journal (and generally updates it after peer review). I know all of my papers are on there. This is such common practice that journals have it baked into their licensing agreements that authors retain the right to upload their work to these places.
So the next time you get hit with that paywall, you may not even need sci-hub, just click the arxiv link on google scholar instead.
if for some reason none of this works, the old âsend a email nicely asking for the paper to the authorâ is always a good trick. remember most scientists hate the commercialisation of scientific knowledge

Many authors of papers are on ResearchGate! You can ask for papers there, if they donât just post a copy to download. If theyâre associated with a college, you can usually find their email addresses in the department directory, also.

Knowledge is Power. Get some. Also, if you need to research medical anything, hit up the free publications (so far that I have found) at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research at https://www.cimr.cam.ac.uk/publications where you can look at publications by search or by year.
hey university-mandated drugs & alcohol education program. if you're trying to "give students the science so they can make the best decisions" i'm gonna need you to cite papers on your statistics. "this graph shows that drinking correlates with lower gpa!!!!" this graph is an arrow that says "drinking" going up and another that says "gpa" going down. there are no numbers. there are no citations. if you are expecting me to practice my critical thinking and media literacy (yknow. as a college student) this is a tiny bit embarrassing.
i might need to send an email about this actually. maybe even a slideshow. this program is so bad at making & backing up its arguments that i would be more likely to consume alcohol after watching it because i simply have no reason to believe anything it is saying.
