Rewatching the early White Collar episodes, again— none of the criminals trust Neal, either, and it’s not because he’s working with the feds, they just think he’s generally shifty. One woman says “trouble follows you.” As in, Neal has a reputation for getting away with things, and not protecting his collaborators.

Yesss the one episode allowed us to look at how the other criminal respond to Neal for us to have a little sketch of his previous criminal years version. They all truly cared for Mozzie and willing to do anything for him but Neal, ehh, they took distance. We also knew that Mozzie never burnt bridge, highly dignified relationship and reliability. This and in the Front Man one where Wikes told neal had dumped him for 500 grand (Wikes def got that personal because he'd thought they could have been great collaborators and "serious Caffrey? 500 grand?" (and decided to kidnap neal to somehow a coping with the last on hiatus partnership) )
