I cannot explain how much I loved this
also props for showing violent murder is not just a young person's game
The way that Hallucination Maid cries when Ye Li is disappointed and asks to be comforted when she's scared is fascinating and tragic and I love it
i love the mysticism/religious motifs that surround the story in The First Jasmine.
often times if it is not wuxia/xianxia, the story treats mystical elements like ghosts, possession or good luck charms etc. as funny anecdotes or something to solve so there can be an explanation.
yet here, it is woven into the story.
we are given hints and clues about how Ye Li manipulates his father about the ghost, yet, the tree she plants with her mother (for her protection, as her mother says) saves her from getting killed by the grandmother.
she keeps talking about things that might be seen as superstitious even in the drama's universe and we are shown sometimes that she is disguising/half telling the truth by making up these stories.
but then again, sometimes there are no explanations. things just happen.
and on top of all these, there are layers and layers of storytelling using psychology.
i just love that.
