I have a theory for the novel The freak circus,
I think that in the black tent of the circus there is a black market where they sell human meat for monsters.
By that I mean that they traffic the bodies of the people they kidnap and kill in the shows.
In this image Jester replies to the question: what would they do if they ever move on from they circus?
And his answer is "As long as there are monsters hungry for blood out there, the show will go on."
This means the circus is not longer the place they were caged in but a home and identity, but the fact they lure people into their circus to kill them hints that there is more to it than just a circus.
In addition if you give enough atention in the zone of the black tent in episode 2 you will realise that the people standing in the row VIP are dressed exactly like Pierrot and Harlequin when in casual clothings.
Also MC mentions that "even the shortest ones are taller than them."
Probably the ones waiting in the line where monsters.
This theory can explain why Pierrot is so afraid that we would look at him differently if he tells us the truth and also explain what they do with the bodies after shows.

i actually really like that some of the characters retain their unsavory traits. simon is still kind of selfish and tunnel-visions when he gets really fixated on a goal (and sometimes even puts his own future second-place in that event), and is kinda good at emotionally manipulating people to get what he wants. sandra still speaks for maddie and doesn't respect her privacy or decisions. charley is still insecure and that affects how he interacts with others, often not being the smartest emotionally. pretty good show.
