Ah! Mr. Hornblower.
That classic meme that keeps going rounds.
tagged by @ascreamintothevoid-blog thank you!! <3
Currently Reading: Just finished Meno Dodici (in Italian!), by Pierdante Piccioni, the real Italian doctor whose story inspired DOC. This was quite a fascinating dive into what an amnesia of 12 years really feel.
Also read Terre des Hommes, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. And after all those years, discovered that "Aimer, ce n'est pas se regarder l'un l'autre, mais regarder ensemble dans la même direction." isn't about romantic love at all, but actually pure platonic love. I've always found it beautiful but this is even more meaningful to me now.
Last Film: In the theater, La Venus Electrique, by Pierre Salvadory (delighful if not very deep movie. Opening film at the last Cannes Film Festival).
On TV, rewatched Source Code, by Duncan Jones, with Jake Gyllenhaal.
Last Show: Shrinking, excellent, truly. And finally caught up S4 of For All Mankind (still one season behind, I know!). Hadn't watched that show is a few years, and it felt good diving back. I really love that show. I feel like the time jump between seasons really works in its favor. Not only because it allows to explore different stage of space exploration, but that way, it doesn't matter if you don't remember much about the previous seasons. There's enough character continuity for it to feel familiar, but it's all new storylines each season.
Last Song: Smile, by Nat King Cole, on the radio this morning. I feel like I should make a fanvid with it or something.
Coffee or Tea: Meh. Coffee as an emergency "wake me up" only. And I'm more an infusion girl than tea. Preferencially berries.
Sweet or Salty: Both. What matters is the variety. I'm not gonna limit myself to only half of the culinary wonders.
Currently working on: Myself.
too lazy to properly tag anyone, but I'd love if people on my feed picked up the meme. Memes are fun, come and join the fun!
RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.
Gifset source
Reblogging in honor of Marjane Satrapi, one of THE great graphic novelists. Her comic Persepolis was a crucial text for shaping my belief that comics can deeply explore identity, culture, politics, and history.
I thought this was going to be a run-of-the-mill crime procedural with an interesting but underdeveloped AI side plot, but instead I found a gripping serialised thriller about the dangers of mass surveillance, the corruption of the government, and three of the best characters i have ever seen on tv

Been having a lot of thoughts about Peter Burke's oh-so-briefly touched on minor league baseball backstory. I feel like in the vast majority of cases, when a character is forced to make a choice between pursuing what they love at a high personal cost or abandoning it, we are told that a life lived following your passions is worth every cost- that there is a right path to take here and it's the one where you slowly destroy yourself. The fact that Peter Burke DOES abandon that particular passion and we don't even learn about it until 3 seasons in, when he is already firmly established as a character who HAS a fulfilling passion and fulfilling relationships, who has been living a personally meaningful life all this time and can look at what he chose to give up as a different chapter of his life that was no more or less meaningful, is remarkable. I think it's a worthwhile and kind of rare message: there isn't ONE thing worth living for! If you leave one passion you can find others!
In my opinion it also serves to highlight an important difference between him and Neal- that Peter is NOT the type to destroy himself for love and Neal IS. This is in that part of season 3 where anything and everything is being used as a metaphor for the choice between staying and leaving that Neal is faced with (up to and including gay marriage but that's a different post haha), and it's like. Well. Well Neal is destroying himself for love RIGHT NOW. He's living this life where he has no freedom and no privacy because it's the most meaningful thing he's ever had and he's trying desperately to convince himself he can keep it up forever. The narrative is impressively morally neutral on the matter- neither man is right or wrong, and they have good reasons for thinking what they do. (Why might Peter believe more chances will come along while Neal thinks he only ever gets one shot? What in their upbringings gave them such different levels of perceived stability)? It's just a rather tragic difference between the two. And all packed into 5 minutes at the end of the fucking baseball heist episode

the reason white collar is so fun is bc neal is unapologetically a criminal but he also goes out of his way to only bother annoying rich people. iconic. give him somebody who actually needs help and he'll do it. show him a way to make a rich person really pissed off and he can't resist.
