I stopped stopping them. I leave my lawn to grow long during their breeding season and when mowing don't mow to the ground, I leave the fallen leaves from my trees (we will rake some out of our paths, but we mostly leave them alone), and I pull out non-native flora when I can ID it. Leaving outdoor lights off (like porch lights) can help as well, as it allows them to see each other blinking.

white people not “connecting” to art made by people of color, especially the more general art that comes from struggles with mental illness, depression and feelings of inadequacy, completely universal feelings shared by many is so funny to me, like be more obvious! so it’s poignant and touching when a white woman says it but when it’s coming from the mouth of a woman of color it’s sort of pretenious and fake deep, not as moving, not as important… i would say ‘just say you don’t respect the arts of BIPOC and go’ but it seems like most of you have already done that!

This is literally what happened to Riz Ahmed’s intensely beautiful movie Mogul Mowgli – so many white reviewers complained about the more dreamlike/surreal sequences, saying that they ‘came out of nowhere’ and that the symbolism ‘didn’t fit’ when I’ve seen the exact same sorts of white-character movies lauded for their depth and complexity. Just because they didn’t recognize or respond to the beats of South Asian diasporan life doesn’t make them meaningless or trite! I fucking cried just from seeing the little mirrors stitched on to his hospital gown during one of the magical realism moments the first time I watched that movie. If you don’t know what Indian garments look like that’s your own problem, not Mogul Mowgli’s. If the imagery and incoherence of the blood of Partition, the ongoing humiliation of immigrant life, if none of that is recognizable to a white viewer as poignant or touching, then I don’t know what to tell you but I probably know what you are
