My modern AU is set in the North of the United Kingdom, primarily at a university where Seraphina has worked as a librarian for eight years, and Gale has just begun teaching his first term, following dismissal from the much more prestigious Cambridge University.

Seraphina was put into dance classes from a very young age by a mother pushing her toward being a professional dancer. She spent the better part of her youth trying to be good enough (never quite meeting the ever-moving goal posts in her mother's mind), until at 13 years old, a severe injury landed her in rehabilitation with the firm conclusion that she would never dance professionally again. Her relationship with her mother did not improve after this.

She studied well in school, though she was bullied throughout for being a nerd and for her family's religious beliefs. Between the mean kids at school and oppressive parents at home, the library became her safe space. After taking English Literature at university and moving away from home, she got herself a job working at the university's library, moved into a tiny studio apartment and began to carve her own path for herself.

Favorite food — Sushi Favorite drink — Herbal and fruit teas Favorite color — Lilac Hobby — Reading Favorite season — Spring, when the world is just shaking off the cold of winter and the flowers begin to bloom Favorite place — a local bookshop's cozy café, where there's a quiet window seat to sit and read. Style — Cottage core, modest and romantic - think midi dresses, soft blouses and has an abundance of cardigans. She doesn’t wear clothes which are especially revealing, but her sense of fun shows itself in the patterns and textures of her clothes (floral, lacy, etc). Music — Relaxing indie folk music, though she has a soft spot for old love songs you can slow dance too.

Gale was a maths prodigy and received a private and advanced education growing up, eventually studying and then getting a job at the prestigious Cambridge University. His job role involved both teaching as a professor, as well as working as a crucial part of a scientific research team. There he met his mentor, Mystra, and shortly after began an affair with her.

His time at Cambridge came to a calamitous end when Gale found himself on the brink of a breakthrough in his research - something which would help millions of people, if he could prove his theory right. His peers were skeptical, and he was told in no uncertain terms by Mystra that he needed proper authorisation by the relevant authorities to experiment further. Gale - lacking patience, fully convinced that he knew best and wanting to prove his prowess to his lover - pursued his experiments in secret anyway, reasoning that his team could all sit on years of paperwork and red tape while he alone advanced the cause. But of course… things went wrong and he was caught.

He was dismissed from his job in order to protect the university's reputation, as well as the research funding. Mystra, too, ended their relationship after news of their affair came to light. Chastened, Gale retreated for almost an entire year. Eventually, he moved up North and took a position teaching at a university again.

Favorite food — A perfect medium-rare steak, generously seasoned with a garlic and rosemary butter and served with a full-bodied cabernet sauvignon Favorite drink — Dark roast black coffee Favorite color — Deep blue Hobby — Cooking (he absolutely can make that perfect steak and might lowkey judge you if you prefer your steak "well done") Favorite season — Autumn, when you can curl up indoors and enjoy the rain from inside Favorite place — He's a homebody and likes fine things… so he has an excellent couch and very much enjoys spending time there lost in a good book. He's also pretty partial to a good wine bar. Style — Leaning into dark academia professor vibes. Well-tailored suits or blazers with a crisp shirt underneath (slightly unbuttoned if he wants to be extra devastating), and soft cashmere jumpers or turtlenecks. Music — He's got an eclectic taste. Anything from classical to classic rock, blues to indie.
