discussion about fic as “better” than published books always misses the mark for me, because that should not ever be the end goal of fic. writing fic, just like writing literally anything, will improve your skill! you will absolutely become a better writer by figuring out how your blorbos fuck nasty over and over. and if you want to use those skills to explore other original work, go for it. but it’s not fair to compare fic to original writing in general, given how wildly different the approach and process is, and it really isn’t fair to compare it to published works. that’s not why it exists! it’s for you to have fun playing with someone else’s toys, and that’s really it. that’s the only ‘goal’ we should have here.
