Some old studies
Man who hates the very concept of life and all living beings: I should design portal websites for colleges and job applications
for those unaware today india experienced one of its biggest protests in half a decade. there were protests all over the nation for various causes but the major one was in delhi. all we asked for was the resignation of the education minister because he's failed the students of this nation time & time again. but we were met with brutality, the police had barricaded the main site of protest (jantar mantar). metro stations were shutdown, the public was restrained from reaching the protest site and all the adjoining areas had signal jammers to make sure the crowd had no access to constant updates. they had us blocked from all the sides. they were lathi (baton) charging students from one side & releasing tear gas from the other. you couldn't walk 100 m on streets without having a tear gas shell thrown at you. there were many students, women & kids bleeding — some from their head. some couldn't walk anymore. the police had removed their nameplates & acted with full impunity to resort to unprecedented levels of violence. they were pelting stones at us, beating up people for no reason, forcefully detaining them and attacking us constantly with tear gas & rubber bullets. they wouldn't let you exit either. the crowd was peaceful & looking out for each other yet they were met with violence. i made a friend who was all alone & she asked to join me & my friend because a policeman wouldn't leave her alone. he constantly prodded her for personal info, invited her back to the jeep saying they have food there, wouldn't stop following her around. you couldn't call or ask anyone for help, we were left to fend for ourselves & be on a constant lookout if you did not want to be beaten up to death by police. all for what? asking a resignation? shame on this country.
Youth-led movement calls on education minister to quit in one of India’s largest anti-government rallies in years
More than 10,000 protesters braved tear gas and baton charges in their largest challenge yet to PM Modi's government.
Good news: if you’re currently laying around and not producing anything, you are a credit to your species.
It’s recently been found that even hive insects rest. Bees will play with colorful toys. Ants sleep for about 1 minute but they do it so frequently it amounts to a few hours per day. Even trees take breaks.
The only things that work without rest are machines; literally everything that lives requires rest.
EVERYTHING THAT LIVES REQUIRES REST. STOP JUDGING YOURSELF FOR NOT BEING A ROBOT.
robots require very frequent breaks! welding machines generally have it programmed in that they can’t run so long they melt themselves. ive overseen two different manufacturing robots now and each of them were fragile, finicky idiots that require constant maintenance and repair. they pause in between moves, in between jobs. you’re always keeping an eye on programming errors, on coolant levels, on heat. you’re always pulling bits of scrap out of joints, sweeping up debris, washing off nozzles and untangling hoses. and even then it snaps a chain and takes a whole morning’s vacation.
even robots need downtime.

I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.
I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.
I always think of the description I saw years ago: Self-imposed deadlines don't help me, because I know the person who set them, and they're full of shit.

speaking from personal experience here's two tricks i've started implementing in my life that have helped me a lot. they mostly refer to cleaning, something i struggle severely with, but it applies to other stuff too
make the desired outcome easier and the undesired outcome harder
a big problem with doing a difficult task is that preparing for it is often impeded by various factors and the alternative is not only easier to achieve but will sometimes make the desired outcome even harder to achieve. so what you're going to want to do is make preemptive, permanent (so you don't have to do it over and over again, which could posit a problem in and of itself) changes to circumstances that both get in the way of the undesired course of action and also that eliminate obstacles to the desired course of action.
here's my personal example: I used to have a big problem with the organic trash in my kitchen, because as I used the kitchen I would want to put stuff down on a surface, which my kitchen doesn't have many (even less so bc, of course, I don't keep it tidy) so I would frequently put stuff on top of the trash lid. result the trash was very inaccessible and thus I would start accumulating trash in other surfaces and containers and also not take out the trash. solution. I removed the trash lid so I wouldn't have the option of putting stuff on top of it anymore and throwing trash in it is easier as well (it also solved a different problem wherein the trash would accumulate humidity which would get stuck and attract bugs which left a bunch of maggots that made me want to deal with the trash even less. taking out the lid meant the humidity didn't get trapped = no maggots)
2. limit the scope of your task as much as you possibly can. this is basically my version of the "break up a task in small parts" piece of advice people give except I always thought this was fucking terrible advice bc it only makes the task look even more gargantuan and unfeasible. the thing is that it's not a terrible idea if only you actually frame it the right way. what you actually want to do is pick one singular part of the task and ignore every other part of it as much as you can. don't list out every part it before you tackle it, instead you want to identify one singular, easily definable part of the task and then immediately tackle it without aiming to complete any other part of it.
this addresses two issues that I and a lot of other people have which is 1. the cognitive load of decision making on a moment to moment basis is mentally taxing and makes you burn out too quickly to finish anything. so if you can instead make one big sweeping decision once that you can just carry out without thinking instead of multiple small decisions every step of the way that'll make it way easier to do 2. the perception that its not worth starting something unless you can finish it. if you limit enough the scope of what "finishing" means, that becomes way more achievable. example: doing the dishes is really hard for me because I feel like it's not worth doing unless I do all the dishes, and when I start doing it I have to decide what I'll soap up next each time I've soaped up something. so instead I decide to just wash every plate, because it's more intuitive to pick up the next one without putting any thought into it, they're likely already in a pile anyway. if I'm done with that, I may decide that I could stand to do cutlery next, and then cups, etc etc. it also gives you convenient stop gaps so you can make a more active choice of when you stop doing the task instead of just kind of petering out and going "I'll finish it later I guess", kinda like chapters in a book
Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms — a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer —may be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.
Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. The above list of grocers and fast food chains is NOT exhaustive, so please continue getting lettuce and other raw produce taken off your burgers, sandwiches, etc.
I write these words with a broken heart. To those who read this and choose to ignore it, you can simply scroll past, but I am living through the most difficult moments of my life. My husband is slowly dying before my eyes. Due to a severe head and jaw injury, he has been unable to eat or drink for over a week, his weight has dropped to just 39 kilograms, and he is suffering from severe, life-threatening malnutrition.
The doctors confirmed he needs urgent surgery, but we can't afford the operation and treatment. I feel helpless watching him weaken day by day, while time is running out.💔

The underlying idea is that in some people – and I stress some people – chronic illness might look like this: a very ancient and primitive part of the brain and nervous system believes it has detected danger, possibly a tiger or something like that, and so it produces pain or a whole range of symptoms in an effort to get the sufferer to close down and protect herself. The nervous system does this very effectively and it can carry on doing it for decades. It is really very inventive. I feel that mine ought to be eligible for some sort of prize.
