Putting this series all together in one spot and including the refined version of Dunner.
This started as me just trying to figure out how to use Procreate and draw on an iPad for the first time, but it kinda wrapped its tentacles around my brain and possessed me for three days.

Bobby just posted a bunch of pics of him in a Kraken sweater and I'm like... oh please let this be a good sign
I need someone to pitch me on a kraken rookie pairing because this prompt feels like some rookie bullshit and I want to see if I can cook something up

You seem like a very good source to ask 🙊 can you please explain the Makar thing and why the kraken hate him? I'm extremely new here, sorry if it's a stupid question
Hello!
It’s not a stupid question! I’m going to do my best to present the facts and why this is such a Thing lol. We’ll start with the specific reason it started, zoom out to ‘why are we STILL booing though??’, and then zoom out even wider to playoffs in general for extra context.
A note about this: I have my own personal feelings but I’m gonna try REALLY hard to stay neutral and simply present the facts of why this has happened and continued. This could be about any bad hit in the playoffs when it comes down to it. I am not here to convince anyone to boo anyone lol anon did not ask me why IIIIII would boo him, but simply why so many boo him. I will try to answer.
Another note: I’m not blocking out Makar’s name so I apologize for this coming up in Avs tags; I promise I didn’t mean to. We’re all floating in this fucked up algorithm and search feature anyway
1. Why Climate Pledge Arena boos Cale Makar
Yam wrote a really excellent, amazingly neutral piece which I applaud. As a Seattleite, I want to add some additional context on why Seattle sports teams are not huge fans of Denver sports in general, but I believe adds some background to why Kraken fans still boo Makar.
It’s 2013. Professional NHL hockey doesn’t exist in Seattle. The Seahawks, long suffering, are at their peak, with Pete Caroll at the helm, the Legion of Boom, and underrated QB Russell Wilson leading the team. They have a fantastic season, going 13-3 in the regular season. Now, forgive me if my recollection is hazy (infants will do that!) but I believe many of the experts thought we would lose to the 49ers and not make it to the Super Bowl— but whatever was predicted, the Hawks beat the Niners and went on to meet the Denver Broncos on Super Bowl XLVIII. What I do remember then is that literally everyone predicted, loudly, that Seattle was gonna get creamed by the Broncos. They had HoF QB Peyton Manning. It was going to be a bloodbath, with Seattle on the losing end. Seattle, having last been to the Super Bowl in 2006 and losing to a stacked Steelers team, felt like they had something to prove.
Well, it was a bloodbath.
Seattle ended up beating the Broncos, 43-8.
And thus, an enduring rivalry was born.
Fast forward to 2022. Russell Wilson is traded to the Broncos and then signs a huge extension with them. Because things have soured between Wilson, the Hawks, and the fanbase, there are a lot of emotions over the trade—mostly negative ones toward Wilson. And who is the first opponent on the Seahawks schedule for the upcoming 2022 season? The Denver Broncos. In Seattle.
Once again, Seattle is expected to lose. We aren’t the team we once were. Our starting QB is our former backup. Russell Wilson is going to be part of a new dynasty with the Broncos.
Well.
Russell Wilson’s homecoming is not a pleasant one. Seahawks fans are pissed and make themselves known. The Hawks win the game 17-16 in an instant thriller. But the bad blood between the teams is cemented. There is no love lost here.
Jump forward six months to spring 2023. NHL Hockey is now a thing in Seattle. Our young team has made it to the playoffs in their second year of existance. The city is pumped. This is our first time and it’s so much fun. And who do we face? The reigning Stanley Cup Champion Avalanche, from our least favorite sports city. We’re expected to be swept. We fight. And then during the series, one of our favored sons, Jared McCann, is taken out of the series by an Avs player. And the rest is history, so to speak.
Seattle sports fans, for better or worse, are petty motherfuckers. We hold grudges. (Ask a Seattleite if they’d ever root for OKC Thunder, fuck no. People here still boycot Starbucks and Howard Schultz.) We are not a hockey town in the traditional sense— aka, this isn’t something we will let go, no matter what other hockey fanbases say or do. So Seattle fans will continue to boo Makar until forever, possibly, because once we hate you, well, we hate you. Does it make sense? It doesn’t have to; it’s sports. Is it something regularly done in hockey? No? We don’t care, we’re doing it anyway.
I hope this provides the original asker some city specific context why Kraken fans still boo Makar, even over a year after that playoff series and the hit.
(And sorry I totally hijacked your post, Yam!!!)
Additionally, Seattle fans hold grudges. And, as mentioned above, a lot of that has to do with the fact that we /don't/ have a lot of championships across most of our teams. (I love you Storm. I love you Sounders.) We end up, a lot of times, as a place where players don't want be because we don't win a lot. But sometimes, they end up loving it here anyway because we will support them - win, lose... there aren't a lot of things we won't cheer for a team through. So, when a player loves us back (Ichiro, Nicolas Lodeiro, Cristian Roldan, Julio Rodriguez, Megan Rapinoe, Sue Bird, Marshawn Lynch and now Jared McCann) we will pull knives and fight for them.
Okay yes yes yes adding to the hijack to throw some emphasis on this specifically as it pertains to Jared McCann and why the fanbase feels so strongly about him. He was the first Kraken to re-sign. He came out of that shit first season and signed a 5x5. He chose the Kraken. He saw what they could be even when they were at their lowest and said you know what, yes. Yes to this team, yes to this city, this is where I am going to build my life and my home. And like my dear moot said, when they love us like that lord help anyone who fucks with them. Seattle fans hold grudges deep but oh do we love deep, too.
There’s an additional element I see, of us really reveling in the response of Avs fans to the whole thing. As said above, when we made the playoffs, EVERYONE expected us to lose. Media, analysis, and especially hockey fans in general.
When we won the first game, we were obviously ECSTATIC. We weren’t getting swept! But the Avs fans, across all social media, were SO quick to tell us how ridiculous we were. How silly our hope was. How clearly we knew NOTHING about hockey, or we’d realize this one win was a fluke, and there was no way we’d get any farther. It was patronizing and grating and beyond insulting to both the new hockey fans AND the fans who had years and decades of hockey fan experience.
And then the Avs won game 2. And it sucked, of course, but the “I told you so”s and “here comes the gentleman’s sweep”s sucked so much more. And then the Avs won game 3, in Seattle. And that sucked even worse. Avs fans’s comments online felt gleeful when they’d tell us, “it’s just how playoffs are. You’ll understand when your team has been around longer. You’ll understand when you have real experience. But hey, you guys tried! You even won your first one!”
Going in to game 4, the prevailing narrative was that we’d been cute, we’d tried our best, but the real playoff team was well on their way to wrapping up round 1. They’d beat us here and then at home and that would be that. And it absolutely rankled. Walking into CPA, even before the game, it already felt like we were fighting for our right to call ourselves hockey fans, for the respect of our team, and for our playoff chances at all. So the hit, and the lack of a reasonable call (Cale only got a minor for interference for it), and the overtime, and Ebs winning it for us and for Canner (with Cale on his knees watching the puck soar into the net), and then the immediate way Avs fans minimized it online and were shocked at the one game suspension the next day, all tipped it to a boiling point.
Booing him in game 6 felt like. I don’t know. Us saying fuck you to that narrative. Fuck you to your patronizing bullshit, and your star players who are so talented and special and beloved and can hurt our star with basically no repercussions. Fuck you to all of it, Canner is our star and he matters too! He matters to US.
And every time they roll their eyes and complain about it, every time they say “it was two years ago!” and “who even cares anymore” and “why do you guys even do this, it’s embarrassing” it takes us right back to that game, that series, those patronizing comments everywhere.
When we boo, this is us getting to turn it back on them. They can complain every time, whine and cry about it, and it only feeds into it and makes our spite stronger. We will keep booing. We will boo harder!!
Beyond all that, though, I’ll boo forever for personal reasons too (that I will not keep to myself sorry!)
The love the fans, the city, and the team have for Jared McCann cannot be overstated. At that time he was our best forward. Our most prolific goal scorer. But most importantly, he was the guy who’d wanted to be here even when it was shitty, and had helped build us into something incredible ahead of schedule. We joke and call him Seattle’s Princess and like. You have to understand, he IS. He’s our Princess in so many ways.
I went to game 4. Seeing him get hit into the boards like that, when he wasn’t expecting it, when the puck was clearly out of play and the entire arena could see it, is something I’ll never forget. I saw it and I saw him crumple and I saw how he had to get helped off the ice and it was FUCKED. And I saw the way Cale watched him fall and skated away. That was fucked too. So I went to game 6 to boo Cale and I’ll boo him forever and never feel bad about it.
I don’t begrudge the fans who love him, I don’t think less of them. I’ve met plenty of nice Avs fans, especially here (as opposed to reddit or twitter). But I will never get over it and dangit as a sports fan I don’t have to!

the backstory of this pic is everything to me actually
the dog family
We're cooking with something here
It’s hard for him, sometimes, not to compare himself to Vince. They’re the same age, both from Ontario, and often viewed in a similar not-an-A-but-still-a-leader-on-the-team sort of way. Although Jared was drafted only one year before Vince, he was bounced from team to team, lonely and misfit, while Vince was darling and secure in St. Louis until Seattle grabbed them both in the expansion draft. And, look, Jared loves Seattle. Really, he does. The city has welcomed him in a way that Vancouver never did, that Miami never did, that Pittsburgh never did (and certainly that Toronto never did). He finally has a taste of the adoration that he’s always hungered for. But even still, some part of Jared feels like he’ll always been on the cusp of never being good enough.

I dreamt I was being kidnapped and then a bus showed up and I was like, Great, I’m saved! But the bus was full of the US Olympic Men’s Hockey team and they were fucking useless.
