The craziest thing about the draft this year is the fact that it is EARLIER than it was last year. Last year, the draft order was announced on June 13th for the draft that took place on June 24th. The expansion draft took place on June 9th, well before the entry draft. That gave teams a good 10 days (still not very long) to prepare for the draft without being distracted by the expansion process.

This year, the draft is an entire week earlier, on June 17th; there is still no announced draft order, and it is immediately after the expansion phases.

There was no good reason for the league to move the draft earlier, knowing there was a high possibility of 4 expansion teams and an extended roster construction process. Also, it's not like the draft date had been announced well in advance. It was announced on May 7th, when the league had already made it clear they wanted 4 new teams.
