if i had to rewrite it, this is what i'd do:

draw out the fake dating thing at the beginning of season 2 for like 3 episodes, plant the seeds for them having feelings for each other

i would get rid of the whole ms. carr storyline but dan and serena break up at some point near the end of season 2.

i'd push the Grandfather episode to the second or third to last episode (nate should have stayed poor for most of the season imo).

instead of blair having the breakdown it's serena who does. her boyfriend just broke up with her, blair and her are having another stupid fight, and she doesn't know what she's doing with her life right now

nate comes out to comfort serena instead of blair. ( i actually really enjoyed the blair/nate relationship in season 2 and it could have been SO cute if it wasn't just a plot device to keep the furniture apart especially with her pining after fuck ass the whole time. ) he talks to serena and she gives him advice as well on the internship

nate chooses the internship and is sort of on a break with vanessa. him and serena are shown spending more and more time together throughout the next few episodes to the season finale, leading to a love triangle

in the end of the season, nate chooses the backpacking trip with vanessa and gets back together with her

at the beginning of the season, we are introduced to tripp and his campaign which nate is helping out with. he helps serena get an internship there (vanessa disproves of nate 'becoming just like his family')

i adored the w internship drama so i think it could be fun if blair schemes to get nate and serena together

in the grandfather part II nate and vanessa, who have already been under strain, break up over tripp's election. at the end of the episode serena comes to comfort nate and they get together
