On May 28th 2026, there has been a first vote regarding a bill that would repeal the Code Noir.
The Code Noir is a set of texts and decrees from the 17th-18th centuries, defining the conditions of slavery and the status of Black people in France. It is still technically in effect today, although technically void due to amendments and laws against slavery.
Steevy Gustave, an Ecologist MP from Essonne, gave a powerful speech about this Code Noir and what it meant and still means in France.
I can only recommand you watch it.
Interesting addition that I haven’t seen mentioned yet : the law passed repealed the Code Noir, but it also provides that the government will create a report on on colonial law, its long-term consequences as well as which parts are still in law today.
