obsession (2026) is packed with upsetting details but i think there is one that can be interpreted in a number of ways. when bear opens his lunchbox and sees the polaroids, one with āyouā caption, another one with ānot meā caption. when it is true that it is real nikkiās way of trying to communicate i genuinely think that it is because she is worried about bear as a friend, perhaps because she thinks he might not have realized yet (even though he knew from the beginning), she tries to warn him that nikki he sleeps next to is not his nikki. it is not necessarily a cry for help but trying to save her best friend. the same friend who betrayed her from the very beginning.
Obsession but the move is centered around a parent wishing their child was ānormalā and being absolutely devastated when they realize all the things they love about their child is gone along with that. This could go so many ways: trans to cis, gay to straight, autistic to allisticā¦make people feel bad for how much they want their child to change for the sake of their own comfortableness.
Anyways, that Obsession date trailer today was great
Y/N: I wish I had 30 seconds of courage
Y/N snaps the One Wish Willow and walks up to Nikkiās doorā¦
Nikki: hey buddy
Y/N: heyā¦Nikki I like you. A lot. And I want to know if you wanna go out for coffee sometime.
Nikki; yeah! I-I was hoping youād ask (giggles) yeah I would love to! Tomorrow?
Y/N: perfect.
Nikki: tomorrow then
GIF belongs to @hunterobsessed
A/N - all I could think when I watched the trailer was āshouldāve wished for the courage to ask her outā
would you guys be interested in a post movie nikki fic?? i love her so much & would love to write something for her <3 (also might open requests if u guys want!)

The most disquieting part of my experience with Obsession is after watching it, thereās a part of me (that might just be the law student) that is thinking of the ways to word the wish to get a result that doesnāt undermine Nikkiās autonomy and consent.
And like, by even asking that, by focusing on the result of a wish rather than thinking about how bear could have just not been a coward and told Nikki how he felt when she asked him, I am undermining her consent. Even something like āI wish I knew how Nikki felt, and if she would be open to dating meā directly goes against her consent, because she said āif I like someone, youād never know.ā
I think the film is deliberately vague about if Nikki liked him back, but regardless, if she did like him, she didnāt say anything, and I think part of that is bearās cowardice. In a world where she liked him, he needed to grow up some before sheād entertain a relationship. Heās scared of honesty, scared of loss and the idea of truth preceding it. Heād rather have a fantasy than the real her, who has autonomy and the ability to reject him.
Like thereās something to the very premise of ābe careful of [what/who] you wish forā that primes you to think exactly like bear. Really masterful storytelling.
The conceit of wishing deals with the entitlement of these ānice guysā like they want the reward without the risk or the work.
Sorry if Iām rambling, I just want to process my experience of the film
Iām not rewatching Obsession because the movie scared the shit out of me, but something thatās different between the trailers and movie is the wording and intention of Bearās wish.
Trailers have him almost calmly saying āI wish Nikki freeman loved me more than anyone in the worldā
But in the movie, heās much more charged in his tone; its almost spat out in anger instead of said. He uses the word āfuckingā as well in his wishā I wish Nikki Freeman loved me more than anyone in the fucking worldā
Thereās violence in his wish. And then heās shocked when that violence manifests.
I think I need to express to y'all just how scary Obsession is. There are few horror films that have truly scared, not even all of my all time favourite horror films have rattled me. The horror movies of last year that I saw in the cinema, Sinners, Weapons, The Long Walk, 28 Years Later, are all great movies that I really enjoyed. They kept me on edge and even really unsettled me, but none of them really struck terror into heart.
Obsession struck terror into my heart. It grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go 'til credits roll. The atmosphere is thick with intense dread that leaves you unsettled and uncomfortable the moment the One Wish Willow is broken.
But of course the real reason this film rattled me so much is Inde Navarette. God she's so absolutely incredible, giving what may be one of the best female performances in a horror movie. Her unpredictability and sheer intensity makes her a terrifying force to reckoned with. The way she sometimes moves like a stop motion character adds to the unsettling nature of her. The moments where the real Nikki is able to break out just makes the whole thing all the more horrifying. There are so many intensly scary scenes but I think the standout is the bedroom scene, it haunts me so much. Inde better get all the awards recognition, the whole movie should but her in particular because she puts her all and then some into this. Absolutely phenomenal performance in an absolutely incredible film.
In truth the real scariest part of the film was everything that Bear did. Fucking bastard, fuck him
reading the original screenplay for obsession. i see why they cut this because itās so in-your-face but godddd nikki (originally nicky i guess) was basically telling bear what would be the moral of the movie and he just canāt absorb any of it
a lot of people seemed to have wanted the movie to go the slow burn route of revealing nikkiās unusual behavior but i think itās much scarier that she just gets swapped out with this entirely different person. the audience is expecting the wish to work, but if it happened gradually and bear could not tell the change, i think it would be weaker. the movie makes bearās culpability very clear and heās willing to accept high unstable distressing behaviour from the jump to get access to nikkiās body and an artifice of her affection. however it is interesting seeing that, originally, wish nikki went about the sandy memorial in a slightly more humanistic (if still very upsetting) way.
iām curious as to how the cat sandwich was originally written. itās honestly the hardest part of nikki to understand, and iāve seen some very good arguments, but theyāve all kind of contradicted each other haha.
the script makes it clear that during the restaurant scene bear unambiguously understands what has happened. the āmore than anyone in the entire worldā line was not there originally, which i think was a pretty elegant tack for the movie
during the sex (rape) scene in the script, which is directly after the restaurant scene, nikki comes to consciousness, and it makes a point that bear completely ignores it. āthe disturbance registers as nothing more than a fleeting inconvenience to him.ā horrifying.
this is interesting. on the one hand i think it makes more sense both in-universe and for the coherence of the movieās point to not have nikki harm bear directly. however this does serve as a tiny cross section of what he did to her, with him expressing pain to her using a ālove crystalā on her, and her ignoring it.
no door tape scene in the original script, and no cat sandwich.
āhappy nikkiā as a name for wish nikki is so so interesting and has ramifications, to say the least. also, happy nikki feeling guilt for her actions at the party once she realizes bear is unhappy with her is so, well, sad!
after the bottle stab. i donāt think this was shown in the movie but i guess it was implied. but hoooweee look at those italics. not very subtle
OHH IāM SO SAD WE LOST THIS FUCKING TELL Him
happy nikki kind of, āstanding upā for nikki? or at least explaining that this is bearās fault? is something that, while i understand is not super present in the movie because itās a tad on the nose, is so so so compelling and i canāt say iām not sad we lost this even if itās a little tell-not-show. cuz just. ughh
disambiguates the hansel & gretel excerpt a little. well maybe not because itās not present in the actual film but itās neat to see her make a direct allusion
NO OKAY IāM GENUINELY REALLY SAD WE LOST THIS SEEING BEAR MISTREAT AND LIE TO HAPPY/WISH NIKKI IS SUCH STRONG WRITING AND THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT TO HIS SCENE WITH REAL NIKKI PLEADING TO HIM AND HIM DISMISSING HER.
delivery was changed in the movie to the definitive you ARE you, nikki. i prefer that greatly as it shows bear does not want to confront what heās done to her
i think i prefer this. iāve seen it argued that sarah coming onto bear before her death is actually a good subversion of the āmaking victims perfect people right before deathā trope in horror, and nicky probably could not have heard her, but the film still draws a connection between sarahās soliciting the kiss and her death. i think it happening more in the middle of something mundane is a bit stronger
i forgot to note but thereās no wish cancelling phone call in the original script
girl⦠the disrespect IāM CRYING
this is a good line and disambiguates happy nikkiās rationale for bringing in sarahās body, though i find the implications of it when left unexplained even more horrific
so. glad. this was changed. bearās actor also came up with the attempt at vomiting up the pills which i think adds a lot to the ending too.
and those are all the changes i found notable! there was also a thing with the gun being given attention at the beginning of the movie (i donāt think it made it in?), a literal chekhovās gun. bearās grief over sandy is a lot more understated in the original play, too, itās not even clear he cares in the script. finally, there are so many stage directions for happy nikki to act āchildish,ā which isnāt surprising but says a lot. also the ā¹ļø was not in the stage directions, one of the most iconic additions and iām so glad we got it. in general the directions for happy nikki arenāt anywhere as emotive as they ended up being and i get the feeling inde navarrette developed her a good deal!
Talking here about the movie Obsession (2026) FULL SPOILERS but about the topic of "love potions" and "evil genie twisting your wish" (and also cw discussion of rape and incest)
I loveeee plots about wishes interpreted in the worst faith possibly, and I dislike when they force it to be bad in a way that it doesn't fit the wish at all. In this movie the wish is mega forced to go wrong, it doesn't work well, but still it works in the concept of the movie. As we see a lot of people complained the product doesn't work properly, and even the real Nicky getting control of her body again is a "flaw" in the wish. But because it is stablished that they don't work well (more than they follow the exact wording in bad faith) it doesn't break anything of the movie.
Now!!! It means and it's interesting that basically all this means that like,,, the body of Nicky is being possessed by a Magical Personification of A Wish who doesn't understand humans at all, and it's trying it's best to mimic human behaviour + not lost her beloved + keep the real Nicky at bay. Wich makes her a great and interesting character per se. So many things are done just to be creepy, but if you see the fake nicky as this, you can really watch the movie understanding that this is a creature that finds human relationships completelly alien and it's just winging it. Including not knowing how to use her body properly if she is not putting full effort.
Now, with the "love potions" kinda plots. I usually dislike when the story is about "how the love is not real" (wich is something the main character said) and not how is fucked up to take control of someone's will like that (wich we can see in the movie how it affects the real Nicky) ...but we also stablished that the main character is a fucked up selfish guy who after made eat his own cat is still like "i can pretend its all okay with my friends and not do any big attemt to fix this situation"... and when he calls on the phone to fix the wish he first wanted to "alter it" and not remove it. He prioritizes always his wishes over everything including the real Nicky he supposelly love. So when he says the love is not real is like. Oh so those are still your priorities. Of course (it also fits the scene so!! again in this case it didn't bother me that much cause it Made Sense) So like, it's fine the main character didn't reach this conclusion cause the movie still reaches that conclusion (so many ignore this and it bothers me!!!)
When Nicky getting a bit of control and tries to communicate with the main character she also says "you have never been with me" wich is softer than saying "you are violating my body but i am not there", and it also makes sense she says it like that because she is asking for help (in the "killing me" way) and can't risk the guy getting mad at her saying "hey you are literally raping me" wich is pretty sad and fucked up but augh...
Now, I think the scene of Fake!Nicky reading that fucked up incest thing was actually Real!Nicky asking for help. I would love to rewatch that scene again, but the fact that Real Nicky said the main character was "like a brother to her" and then read about how "my brother, you would enter me tonight again" it's such a clever way to try to explain to the main character "this is what you are doing to me and this is how disgusting it is". And how desperately she tries to control her body in that party and tell everyone... and still the guy is letting it happend and not explaining anything about anyone... he is the worst but every try of Real!Nicky to escape and be free it's so good... good movie. very fucked up good movie

I think that Obsession portrays toxic and manipulative relationships where the abuser is manipulating people around them to make the victim look like the toxic one in the relationship - the way Bear looks innocent to their friends and they're all worried about him and they think that Nikki is crazy, while Nikki is actually the one being used and abused here without her consent, but they can't see that from their perspective. Usually, abusers are sweet and nice to everyone except their family/romantic partner, and most people find it hard to believe that someone who is so kind can be capable of hurting anyone so they think that the victim is falsely accusing them.
Sarah represents the third person's perspective. She cares deeply about Bear, and Nikki's scary behaviour makes Sarah sympathise with Bear and try to help him. But by helping him, she ends up being murdered by Nikki and Nikki immediately tells Bear "it's your fault for this. You wanted this". Nikki's words in that scene sounded almost as if the real Nikki was saying that to Bear because her actions were the result of his wish and she wasn't responsible for them - he was. Usually when a third person tries to help the manipulator and connects with them they soon end up a victim of their manipulative actions because they didn't know what the manipulator was capable of until they got closer to them, just like Sarah suffered the consequences of Bear's wish here even though she was just as innocent as Nikki. And if Bear had a crush on Sarah and not Nikki, he would have done the same thing to Sarah.
The title goes both ways - Nikki was obsessed with him because of the spell, while Bear was already obsessed with her.
Inde Navarrette as Nikki (Obsession 2026)
gonna go watch obsession in theaters. very excited to have meta thoughts after experiencing it on the big screen. for now i just wanna say that bear killing his cat through the negligence of his poor choices (re: leaving opioids lying around) is a BRILLIANT metaphor and piece of foreshadowing for like. literally Everything that's going to happen in his relationship with nikki.
**Major Spoilers for Obsession (2026)**
I think the thing that is the most disturbing to me about Obsession is just how quickly it becomes totally clear that Bear not only never loved Nikki, but that he never even liked her.
//Spoilers ā¼ļø for the movie Obsession//
Nikki being the victim in this movie is literally not up for debate btw.
Bear f*cked up big time. He paid the price, sure, but not before causing a lot of damage and trauma around him. Especially to Nikki.
There are two key moments for me that clearly highlight how Bear is truly not a good guy and never was. At all.
Firstly, and most importantly, when Nikki asks him to kill her as her possessed self is sleeping and unaware of their interaction. This is Bearās first very straightforward opportunity to fix his mess. If he truly cared about her and her wellbeing, he would take immediate action. Like kill himself. Sucks, but gotta do what you gotta do, man. But no, of course. Bear takes personal offence into the idea that sheād rather die than forcefully be with him. Itās pathetic and enraging. Letās remind ourselves here that Bear is regularly r*ping her (and forcing other forms of intimacy on her as well), enslaving her mind and quite literally stealing her entire life from her. The notion of consent is simply nonexistent and heās actively okay with that. Before everything spirals into total chaos, he just wants to alter his wish, not erase it fully. He still wants that control over her, whether she is happy or not. She pleads for liberation from this curse and Bear decides to victimize himself, be selfish again and then he walks away. Ruining his ultimate chance.
Secondly, the suicide scene. Hereās the thing⦠Itās too late at this point. He missed out on several opportunities to make things better and he kept on prioritizing his power over Nikki. It led him to a point of no return where his life is irreparably turned upside down, his two closest friends were killed (because of him) and Nikkiās possessed self represents a very real danger for him (all his fault, once again). There is only one way out of this: He needs to die. Even with this unavoidable truth, Bear manages to fail again. He swallows all the pills and a few seconds later, he cowardly tries to undo his actions. The storyline leads to him overdosing and dying regardless, but this moment is decisive to represent his true character. It still wasnāt enough, somehow, for him to end it all. Truth be, it was unfortunately too late for Nikki one way or the other. The trauma was just too massive with the murders and the self-harm. He ruined her entirely.
If you ask me, the title is about him being horrendously obsessed with her, not the other way around. His obsession led him there. He refused to take a risk and potentially get in the friendzone. This was unthinkable and impossible to accept for him.
And also, that sickening story she presents at the party⦠Itās not just to generate a deeply uncomfortable and eerie atmosphere, itās not just to shock the audience with its content. Itās about them. Itās literally them. She mentioned feeling a sibling-like connection with him. Nikki is being abused and tortured by someone she considered a brother. This is a tale about his cruelty. This is her cry for help. And it breaks my heart.
Masterpiece of a movie, truly.

one of the things i admire most about obsession is the deliberate denial of any kind of optimistic ending, as well as the method by which that is executed. iām thinking, specifically, of how the musical cues are utilized to pull multiple bait-and-switches on the audience: the way the music swells when bear is explaining the wish to ian and asking for his help; when bear puts the gun in his mouth; and when he takes the oxycodone.
obviously, if ian wishes away bearās initial wish, thatās a happy ending! if bear dies in the bathroom and we cut to black, the audience can hold onto the hope that the wish breaking allows nikki to go back to her life before!
but those endings, especially the latter, would be dishonest. i appreciate that the film makes us sit in nikkiās anguish instead, bc i appreciate that it understands that she was equally affected by this, if not more so! an ending that bleak is honest to the concept and to the consequences inherent to the concept and i think it shows a great deal of respect for nikki. itās an acknowledgement that nikki experienced something deeply violating and now has to somehow learn how to cope with it.
the fact bear only tried to cancel his wish after being told he couldnāt alter it (and, seemingly, because he was uncertain about how real nikkiās love actually was) - instead of wanting to do that from the start, as soon as it was clear that something was wrong with nikki - makes me so, so devastated for her. itās clear he was more concerned with what he was getting out of the wish, rather than the detrimental effect it was having. and like, everyone could tell something was up with nikki, itās not as if it wasnāt clear. him hanging up the phone as soon as nikki is out on the line (screaming) is so symbolic of how he is completely ignoring how he is ruining her life throughout the film
