With Glasses On
what do you call a tiger with glasses on?
a scientist tiger
me at 5: i want to learn how to draw the best art ever
me now: wait people have already done that BUT i can draw bad art that nobody has ever drawn before and it’ll take less time so ill do that instead
me in the future: i did that and i’m generally happy
im gonna start swimming without my shirt on
“what’s so bad about being with me?” ❣️🪦
movie: obsession, directed by curry barker.
song: “change (in the house of flies)” by deftones
frame count: 606
this movie has sat with me since i saw it last week. it’s just mean, as one of my besties put it. beyond unsettling and beyond incredible. this is a must-watch for anyone who likes to be scared.
as always, all frames printed and remixed by hand. no ai used. :)

Living in the city long enough made it feel like I couldn’t be afraid of nighttime anymore. I’d walk alone for what felt like miles until I found an open shop with chocolate almonds for my friend. I wouldn’t have my phone on me but for some reason I felt determined about these small things. It was like standing in moving water.
reading the original screenplay for obsession. i see why they cut this because it’s so in-your-face but godddd nikki (originally nicky i guess) was basically telling bear what would be the moral of the movie and he just can’t absorb any of it
a lot of people seemed to have wanted the movie to go the slow burn route of revealing nikki’s unusual behavior but i think it’s much scarier that she just gets swapped out with this entirely different person. the audience is expecting the wish to work, but if it happened gradually and bear could not tell the change, i think it would be weaker. the movie makes bear’s culpability very clear and he’s willing to accept high unstable distressing behaviour from the jump to get access to nikki’s body and an artifice of her affection. however it is interesting seeing that, originally, wish nikki went about the sandy memorial in a slightly more humanistic (if still very upsetting) way.
i’m curious as to how the cat sandwich was originally written. it’s honestly the hardest part of nikki to understand, and i’ve seen some very good arguments, but they’ve all kind of contradicted each other haha.
the script makes it clear that during the restaurant scene bear unambiguously understands what has happened. the “more than anyone in the entire world” line was not there originally, which i think was a pretty elegant tack for the movie
during the sex (rape) scene in the script, which is directly after the restaurant scene, nikki comes to consciousness, and it makes a point that bear completely ignores it. “the disturbance registers as nothing more than a fleeting inconvenience to him.” horrifying.
this is interesting. on the one hand i think it makes more sense both in-universe and for the coherence of the movie’s point to not have nikki harm bear directly. however this does serve as a tiny cross section of what he did to her, with him expressing pain to her using a “love crystal” on her, and her ignoring it.
no door tape scene in the original script, and no cat sandwich.
“happy nikki” as a name for wish nikki is so so interesting and has ramifications, to say the least. also, happy nikki feeling guilt for her actions at the party once she realizes bear is unhappy with her is so, well, sad!
after the bottle stab. i don’t think this was shown in the movie but i guess it was implied. but hoooweee look at those italics. not very subtle
OHH I’M SO SAD WE LOST THIS FUCKING TELL Him
happy nikki kind of, “standing up” for nikki? or at least explaining that this is bear’s fault? is something that, while i understand is not super present in the movie because it’s a tad on the nose, is so so so compelling and i can’t say i’m not sad we lost this even if it’s a little tell-not-show. cuz just. ughh
disambiguates the hansel & gretel excerpt a little. well maybe not because it’s not present in the actual film but it’s neat to see her make a direct allusion
NO OKAY I’M GENUINELY REALLY SAD WE LOST THIS SEEING BEAR MISTREAT AND LIE TO HAPPY/WISH NIKKI IS SUCH STRONG WRITING AND THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT TO HIS SCENE WITH REAL NIKKI PLEADING TO HIM AND HIM DISMISSING HER.
delivery was changed in the movie to the definitive you ARE you, nikki. i prefer that greatly as it shows bear does not want to confront what he’s done to her
i think i prefer this. i’ve seen it argued that sarah coming onto bear before her death is actually a good subversion of the “making victims perfect people right before death” trope in horror, and nicky probably could not have heard her, but the film still draws a connection between sarah’s soliciting the kiss and her death. i think it happening more in the middle of something mundane is a bit stronger
i forgot to note but there’s no wish cancelling phone call in the original script
girl… the disrespect I’M CRYING
this is a good line and disambiguates happy nikki’s rationale for bringing in sarah’s body, though i find the implications of it when left unexplained even more horrific
so. glad. this was changed. bear’s actor also came up with the attempt at vomiting up the pills which i think adds a lot to the ending too.
and those are all the changes i found notable! there was also a thing with the gun being given attention at the beginning of the movie (i don’t think it made it in?), a literal chekhov’s gun. bear’s grief over sandy is a lot more understated in the original play, too, it’s not even clear he cares in the script. finally, there are so many stage directions for happy nikki to act “childish,” which isn’t surprising but says a lot. also the ☹️ was not in the stage directions, one of the most iconic additions and i’m so glad we got it. in general the directions for happy nikki aren’t anywhere as emotive as they ended up being and i get the feeling inde navarrette developed her a good deal!
