Kiwi RPG spotlight: Day Five
It's Kiwi RPG Week! While ideally you'll hear about kiwi ttrpg content year round, this is the week where we really focus on sharing the cool stuff made by our community- from standalone games, to supplements, to actual plays.
This year, I'm going to introduce a kiwi-made rpg each day! Today we have:
Na te Puhipi nā Kelly Whyte
(Ko Pākehā te iwi)
Na te Puhipi is a journaling game about the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The bulk of gameplay consists of reading and reflecting on speeches made at the 1840 signing, from the perspective of an attendee. At the end, the player writes their own speech in response to what they've read.
This game would make a good teaching tool, especially with the attention it gives to the context and shortcomings of the primary historical source. When I was in school, learning about Te Tiriti consisted of memorising a list of facts. After the third year of doing this it becomes pretty tiresome! Varying the manner in which information is conveyed is so important for keeping students engaged.
[WITNESS LOG: THE OTHER MOTHER, 200x]
"Well, no kid like that is born out of anything good. I know children get abused as early as infancy- hell, look at our- well- um... ......it's just another thing to just go out and talk about it. "

public defenders get behind me. i’ll defend you this time
“so you like criminals?” I LIKE THE RIGHT TO A FAIR TRIAL.
One of worst things copaganda ever perpetuated is the rhetoric that if you aren't guilty of breaking the law, you shouldn't value your personal privacy against the state's surveillance and interrogation. That only guilty people hire lawyers when talking to police.
The fact that tech companies are allowed to act the way they do is so baffling compared to literally any other business model ever. Like, imagine if you went to the grocery store but every time you reached for an item, an employee rushed out of nowhere and snapped a rat trap on your fingers. And when you got to the counter, they proudly informed you that for just $12.99 a month, you too could get the rat trap-free grocery store experience. Shouldn't I have that anyway? Or they just looked at you like you had three heads and told you to shop at another store if you didn't like the rat traps breaking your fingers. Am I crazy?
And then you ask a buddy to go with you to the store with the sole purpose of simply blocking this guy. And the store then tries to lock the door in your face, claiming that this violates their company policy and that preventing it counts as stealing.
Christ this is so fucking cool
I haven't been able to stop thinking about this. There's so much going on here. I genuinely love the conception of gender as mystic autodeism. Gender as divine microcosm. Gender as Great Work. It's gnostic, it's alchemical, it's got notes of bacchanalian worship of the body and the inherent magic of self-discovery. This but unironically.
So much of these people's worldview comes down to a disgust at the concept of personal autonomy. Making decisions about your body, your circumstances or your future is a demonstration of unbelievable arrogance that must be beaten out of you, either before you take the action via making it as difficult as possible or after you take the action via punishment and scorn, so that you give up this sinful concept of owning your own life. They treat the world like abusive parents who are completely shocked that their "ungrateful" twenty year old children refuse to call them any more.
Being an adult will have you unironically craving a vegetable
no fucking way

Bro absolutely COOKED with this.
If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.
It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.
It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.
This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.
hikes are very good yes but a deluxe hike is when you are accompanied by a freak with niche nature knowledge. they’re like omg stop there’s a horned valerian varmint beetle here and then you both get to crouch down and look at a bug like :)
