It's kinda interesting how batman is pro-rehabilitation for villains until it's a good guy gone bad. Look at how he talks about parallax and red hood for example. It's almost like the more personally invested he is, the crueler he can be, most likely due to some of the many unresolved issues that led to him becoming batman. Also his contingency plans for the justice league, his friends, are a lot more extreme than the plans he would pull out for the average rogue
With someone like harley quinn, who is a pretty fair success story for batmans methodology, bruce isn't as personally invested because he isn't as close to her outside of the cowl. Meanwhile with a friend he's known for years and his literal son, their turns toward the dark side hurt him more and they have a lot more dirt on him

something that i have picked up on as a pattern in fics is privacy & autonomy vs abuse. And not in the way of “abuse takes over and destroys autonomy”, but in the way of “abuse outcry triumphs victims autonomy/right to privacy”. Dg as a fully grown adult will have a breakdown and confess to some kind of abuse on bruce’s/[insert character here]’s part or the abuse will be uncovered on accident/through investigative work. And because it is abuse it automatically triumphs dg’s autonomy in deciding who to tell, when to tell, or what (if anything) to do about the abuse after telling. Justice is swift and dg’s thoughts or feelings on the matter get swept away with the tide of Retribution For An Injustice, ignoring completely what he would maybe like to keep private or what he wants the response to be under the guise that he is Too Abused To Know What He Wants (aka is hysterical) and that the Heros Of The Tale will Take Care Of It All, and with the undercurrent of it all saying that one day he will be Healed and he will Agree that this Had To Be Done and will forgive everyone involved, within the course of one honest conversation.
i feel like this approach fails to probe out its own flaws, or even think with any complexity about what may be happening behind the scenes of dg’s feelings and thoughts. The Greater Good is completely stomping on dick’s privacy- suddenly everyone, friends, coworkers, mentors and mentees, people whom he likes and respects, and people he perhaps doesn’t appreciate, all have sudden and intimate knowledge of something that was private, and he did not choose to tell them. There is no attempt to stop and question where the line is and who gets to make this choice about dick, for dick, without his permission. There is no relationship stakes in that dg might view this as a permanent betrayal, no question as to if it could ruin their relationship with him. Because it was Abuse, exposing it even without the victim’s permission is Morally Right, because abuse is Morally Wrong and Needs To Be Punished.
i feel like there are interesting questions to be asked here. Where is the line? At what point do people deserve to have some background knowledge of this person before they get involved with them? If dg says Tell Nobody, who is it okay to tell? Can someone be Forced to get help? Is someone in the wrong for spreading this private information? At what point does something become bad enough that it’s no longer allowed to be private? Where is the line in how abusive something has to be before the victim is no longer allowed a say in the outcome? Etc etc. Theyre not being answered anywhere i can find. I think i would like to see more grappling with the issues at hand, not just in How To Punish or Reform The Abuser.
Okay wait op I don't know if you have already looked into this but i feel like you are looking at differnce between a system centred approach (what's happening in a lot of these fics) vs survivor based approach (one that centers autonomy and confidentialty)
no yes exactly!! so many of these fics are also very carcel in nature. Which , i will not lie to you, makes absolute sense for Carcel System Comicaganda- the characters WOULD think this way. But is it going to damage their relationship with DG? Why does dg want? Usually they go with “dg knows deep down things should change and doesn’t Love the way they are, but change is Too Scary, so once change is enacted on him he’ll stop with the paltry defense and get over it”, or “dg genuinely doesn’t know this is abuse” (yall.) instead of the question that requires more introspection: if dick grayson does not want things to change, is it ethical to forcibly stop the abuse, and will taking action against the perpetrators damage the relationship between dg and whomever enacts this change on him?
im not necessarily against going “hey, this relationship is absolutely inappropriate and something has to change because you are in physical danger”. There are times where you have to put someones safety above their desires, but i think that first of all this is not ideal and should only be used in absolute extremes, secondly it destroys their autonomy in much the same way abuse does, and thirdly does not actually fix the issue, only briefly takes them out of the space of danger. So often it is written that once the victim is removed they ‘come to their senses’ and are extremely grateful to their rescuers- in reality this is not common. I think dg is aware that his relationship with bruce is not normal when you look at broader society, but he is not Part of broader society, and no two relationships are alike. I think he also would not label it abusive- physicality is a part of their relationship, and it is OK because it is him and bruce. This is abused logic, but acting like he’s crazy for thinking it is not helpful. Hes not stupid! He is capable of understanding his own life and how he is treated. He would not be Shocked by someone calling Bruce or slade or whoever the fuck abusive: he just would not agree, and he would not want to change. THAT is a far more interesting internal conflict than “wow! Abuse bad!”
Very true!! Also sorry to co-opt the post but I'm going to link some reasouces around survior based approaches below in case anyone is interested in learning more about it. The stats surrounding dv/abuse/assult are absolutely crazy and there is a decent chance you'll know a survivor at some point so knowing the basics of survivor based approaches can be really helpful when providing support :)))

Tim finding out dick was assaulted and then telling everyone is bad and is an example of a system based approach bevause he is prioritizing doing The Right Thing (ex. Reporting, pushing for "justice" in form of incarceration) instead of respecting/ considering dicks autonomy
System based approaches can put survivors in danger and at risk of retumatiziation
Tim asking dick how he is doing and whay he can to help would be a survivor based approach that priorities the survivors decisions and places them and their autonomy at the upmost importance
There are 2 primary scenarios where those principles are ignored and you need to tell someone:
When it involves a child. Ex. If Tim found out bruce was hitting damian Tim SHOULD tell soemome even if damaian doesn't want him to. This is bevause children brains aren't fully developed and they are not in a position to be assessing risk or making these choices
When the survivor is at risk of harming themselves or other. If Tim found out dick was drinking /partying excessively/etc because we was recently assulted and his mental health is bad, Tim SHOULD NOT tell anyone what happened. Dick might be engaging unhealthy coping mechanisms, but he is an adult and that is his choice. Forcing him to recive help will not make things better. However, if Tim found out that Dick had made a plan to kill himself bevause he was assaulted or Dick planned to murder a bunch of people because he was assaulted, then Tim SHOULD tell someone what happened.
Tl:Dr survivors have had there choices continuously ripped away from them. Therefore, whenever possible try to support them making their own choices

Red Hood Jason does not seek out rapists to kill, he is trying to kill drug dealers (which fandom decides to paint as progressive for some reason). Just because he's also OK killing people who commit violence against women or children when they cross his path doesn't mean that that's his primary motive or something he seeks out to do, but fandom tries to paint that as it. Their interpretation of Jason is based mostly off headcanons and misinterpretations of out of context panels or intentionally throwing out most of what he does, so I consider it without basis.

I know this is dumb but since this is the grown up people talking about fanfiction website: if your fanfic is "so good" than you can just "file the serial numbers off" and make it original fiction, it's probably terrible fanfiction.
As in the sense that it might be good original writing, excellent even, but if you could make it so easy to pass it off for anything else by just changing the names, it probably had nothing to do with the setting or characters it was talking about in the first place and so it was terrible as fanfiction. Again, it might be EXCELLENT as original fiction and that's great. Just bad as fiction made by a fan about a fandom.
Sometimes they are bad as both original fiction and fanfiction though, and sometimes this is because they are written with the conventions of fanfiction, but that's another thing.

Got into a discussion about emergency response at a professional retreat recently and everyone was going on and on about agility, and I was like, "Okay but what about contingency?"
And they were like "What?"
And I was like, "Agility isn't the ultimate form of preparedness. Contingency is. Agility still requires you to flounder and figure out a solution in the moment, but if you have a contingency plan, all you have to do is implement it."
And they were like "But you can't make contingency plans for every situation!"
And I was like, "Yeah, you basically can if you just identify all of your basic dependencies and contingency plan around the loss of any dependency," and then I gave a few examples.
And they all stared at me like I'm an alien.
Anyway, that's how I figured out I'm Batman-coded and also learned how Batman must feel talking to supposedly professional superheroes who never bothered to run disaster scenarios until I pointed out that it's insane that they don't already have a plan for if Superman turns evil.
