Him being aroace is a popular FANON, a very popular read of the movie/text and that's good and appreciable, but that doesn't translate into any meaningful political disadvantage. Any snubbing that he may face in his personal life for his lack of romantic relationship, DOES NOT translate into him being seen as politically expendable in society at large. When has it that a white man has been made to answer the world for his sexuality? We live in a world where words like "bachelors" and "spinsters" exist and you cannot use them interchangeably for they are interpreted and exist in widely different contexts informed by misogyny. We live in a world where any and every sexual habit of a brown and black man gets scrutinized and villainized. I know Ryland Grace is a very blorbofiable character , within a very blorbofiable media where half the movie takes place in space away from anything having to do with Earth, and I know 80% of the fandom is more interested in exploring an almost utopic society on the fictional Erid, but for the love of God words in fandom spaces have to mean something even if it's not half so serious. Because it is we who live in the real world, come online and then occupy this digital space. You are telling me to believe that Ryland Grace played by Ryan Gosling is treated as expendable in the political context of asexuality because Eva Stratt said "you don't have any close family or are in a relationship, you don't even have a dog" and for it not to simply mean that he doesn't have anyone personally depending on him? Also why is Linda this faceless ex treated almost like a dead weight around Ryland's neck in fanfics? What is happening? What are we doing?
