How much of Bucky did the Winter Soldier take with him and how much of him remained in that snow and died?
writing advice for characters with a missing eye: dear God does losing an eyes function fuck up your neck. Ever since mine crapped out I've been slowly and unconsciously shifting towards holding my head at an angle to put the good eye closer to the center. and human necks. are not meant to accommodate that sorta thing.
other things I'm bitching about but which could still be useful as writing advice for 1 eyed characters:
2. they're going to favor their sighted side, obviously, but it doesn't always manifest in the way you think. when I walk down a hall I walk much closer to the wall on my sighted side than on my blind side. which is the opposite of how it might seem logical to do that bc it means the world at large is on your bad side, but the reason is I can't fucking See the wall if it's right next to me in the blind side and I end up knocking into it.
3. door frames and poles are my enemy. If your character is smart this will not be a problem but for me it is. I am King of walking into shit I could absolutely see but couldn't tell how far away from me it was. on this note, their blind side hand is getting bashed into every jutting out thing in a 5 mile radius.
4. having 0 depth perception is less of a big deal than you'd think it is. Especially with driving. I've become a Much safer and more wary driver because I can't tell how far the other cars are from me. however I fucking suck at parking now. because I can't tell how far the lines are from me either.
5. you know how people who lose limbs get phantom pains? that happens with eyes too but like. phantom sights. for me it's like. a lot of bugs. like every so often my brain will just put something suddenly skittering beside me there. hate that.
6. it is completely possible to "get stuck" somewhere because your ability to tell how wide a space is is just Gone. shopping isles especially where bumping something or Someone is matter of embarrassment or potentially breaking something. it can be legitimately paralyzing and also irritate everyone around you because they can tell there is Plenty of space for you to get your cart through even if you can't.
7. if the eye is still in their skull it can still be the normal kind of painful. Glares off of shiny surfaces causing weird sharp pains you can't figure out the cause of are genuinely one of gods greatest tests of my patience.
i have a feeling it might be part of the big three what big three? androids, aliens & wizards that's not a thing that's definitely a thing

thinking about Steve and silent grieving
What is the sga debacle?? Did he do something specific?? I only know that he also made the shows Dark Matter and Utopia Falls which both have diversity and representation so that makes me hopeful for the same treatment in a new stargate series.
hi! whew im so sorry im just getting to this lmfao. truthfully ive been rly busy and this is such a serious topic that i wanted to make sure i chose my words carefully and laid everything out in the best way possible.Ā
disclaimer section! im not the best person to speak on this topic ahha. I just got into the fandom last year and it was only a few months ago that i started to hear some of these issues that existed previously (so if any veteran stargate fans wanna hop in on this and explain things in greater detail, please do)! also this is not a call out post or canceling thing. this is simply a hey-these-things-happened-and-maybe-we-should-be-careful-with-who-we-interact-with-and-trust type thing. anyways without further ado, hereās some of the sketchy shit that went down behind the scenes of stargate atlantis! (all sources are posted in the comment/replies btw)
> letās start with the decision to kill off carson beckett because thats where the first weird comment pops up. now a lot of people claim that this was a move made by writers & producers to shake up the show and āmake the actors feel less secure.ā iāve never been able to find that direct quote although ive heard people say that someone openly admitted it on the audio commentary/bonus features on the atlantis dvds soo take that however you like aha.
> after the sudden exit of paul mcgillion, tori higginson left the show a few episodes later anddddd ok this is where things escalate. this is an interview she gave where she openly talks about everything that went on behind the scenes. but to summarize, the writers ignored all of her input and refused to grow the character further when she had clearly outgrown the āHammondā role. joseph mallozzi states in his blog post that brad wright himself was very fond and loved the weir character and he claims that the decision to write her out was because of ājust simple logic.ā(1) however, torri tells a different story. (2)Ā
āHonestly? I found that quite shitty, to be honest (laughs).Oops. But I found out, because I kept going to them, I kept going up to them saying āI have a feeling my character, youāre not doing anything with me, and you guys have me for six years and I donāt want to, you know, be here not doing anything. Let me know whatās going on.ā And they kept saying āno, no, no, itās great. We love you. We love you. Things can be great.ā And I said āwell, if thatās the case, can we do something with herā and they kept reassuring me that nothing - and the very last day of filming season three, as I finished filming the last scene on the last day I was called up to the office and was told that my character was going to become recurring if I chose to be. So, I thought that was not very, um, dignified, way to deal with it, and I was a bit surprised. So I wasāso my reaction was one of yeah, I was a little bit surprised. I was a little bit upset by how it was dealt with. But I wasnāt upset at the decision because I understood it. I kept going to them saying āI get, I get whatās going to happen, just give me some notice so I can pack my apartment and move back to L.A. Really. So I wasnāt upset with the decision. I was upset with how it was handled.ā
she was led on and told her role would be reduced after the filming of season three which is uh. absolutely insane to think about considering sheās the main female lead of the show. And this is just my personal opinion but i think its interesting timing that as soon as brad stepped down, joseph mallozzi and his writing partner, paul mullie got rid of her. Itās also pretty telling that there was some bad blood behind the scenes because she didnāt even reprise her character in season five for the ghost in the machine aka the episode where they ākill elizabethā off. although i do wanna mention that since then, jm has posted that he believes elizabeth would actually still be alive today and is just in stasis somewhere waiting to be found ā¦which is nice. i guess. maybe they shouldnāt have fired her in the first place but hey whatever.Ā
and to end the torri section, hereās another quote that i think is the real reason she was let go from atlantis.
Question: And now Amanda Tapping seems to be doing exactly the same⦠just filing an episode. Torri said āWell, no. I understand that itās a club, and you know, some people.. .you know. I think they didnāt like me constantly rapping on the doors saying āexcuse me, why arenāt there any women writers or any women producers on the show?ā I think it bothered them. And so, Amanda, bless her, just had a kid so... bless her, man, she needs that gig more than [me]⦠you know what I mean? So I have no issues with any of them. I understand how it works. It is a bit of a political game and⦠Iām not very good at politics (laughs). Iām like Weir. I just want to act.ā
> now this is where the joe flanigan of it all starts to come in. heās been vocal about defending torri higginson and openly saying how bad of a decision it was to kill her off. (3) and his interview with dial the gate was enlightening on a few topics. (4)
his character didnāt get a backstory until season 3. tptb literally told him, ājohn likes ferris wheelsā and called it a day. which is actually mind boggling. they gave him nothing to work with and somehow he turned it into gold.Ā
heās also said many times and in different interviews how terrible it was that the writers carried over from sg1. the cast would pitch ideas but would be shut down because they would sound ātoo much like an sg1 epā which is ridiculous considering how many atlantis scripts are just a rip off of sg1 eps anyways.
> and finally the whole whispers debacle. now i donāt really know a lot about this, so I'll just link the tumblr post that first brought this to my attention! (5) thereās also the whole āthe writers stopped taking notes from the cast after season 3 and specifically started to shun joe outāĀ thing (which is very obvious in seasons 4 and 5) so iāll also link another great tumblr post because they explain it so much better than i can. (6)
> thereās also the fact that once it became clear that universe was not doing well, both bw and jm turned and blamed it on atlantis and even sg1 fans.
āI donāt think if we, for any reason, go away, it is an issue necessarily of the quality of the product that weāve been making. I think getting moved on the schedule has hurt us. And the fact that some of the fans that liked SG-1 and Atlantis were so angry that they have deliberately hurt us, which is unfortunate.ā (7) Brad Wright.Ā
Jaso967060 writes: āHeck I think alot of people from āthat other siteā could be won back if some changes are made. (Finding out the Destinys Mission and the crew working together more instead of tearing each other downā¦and having more actionā¦changes like that.)āĀ
Answer: Disagree. Given that their deluded mission statement is to see SGU cancelled in order to pave the way for an SGA return, I doubt that very much. (8) Joseph Mallozzi
this post is getting too long so i wonāt go into the whole āstargate atlantis viewers were not the right demographic the writers wantedā thing. because yes this may have been said by one of the writers (i donāt have a source but so many people bring it up and it makes sense considering the type of show universe is). also joe flanigan talked about how the writers and producers disrespected atlantis fans and he sorta mentions this quote too so im gonna link it. (9) also i would just like to say huge shoutout to joe for not caring to be diplomatic lol.Ā
but yea. please take this post however you would like. all of this happened years and years ago so one can only hope people have learned from their mistakes. and if a fourth stargate show is ever made, I just pray they'll finally have women and poc writers/producers/directors as main contributors. also joseph mallozzi has done so many interviews with dial of the gate in recent years, so i would check those out if anyone would like to hear his current thoughts on stargate. (if you do, please message me because i would love to know if he acknowledges any of these topics ahah).Ā
and to end this lovely post, let's reminisce on that one time joe flanigan called the writers of atlantis ārodney mckaysā <3
āBecause the writers are all McKays ā they are the collective Rodney McKay. Itās a whole load of little McKays running round up there in the offices.ā (10)
so sorry this took a million years to respond to ahha. and i may have gotten a bit sidetracked but i hope i answered your question !!
and this isn't even EVERYTHING tbh
just ask me what happened to the nice queer couple in stargate origins (don't ask me, it was awful, trust me, you don't want to know)
and I love sg1 and sga but I also am fully cognizant of their flaws
So off the top of my head:
Mallozzi got kicked off the main fan website for his own show for being a huge asshole to fans. Gateworld was the primary fan site for Stargate (this was before social media) and they had to ban him for being a dick to people. That tells you all you need to know about this dude.
There was a serial rapist character they introduced in a "humorous" episode, and when the fanbase pointed out this guy was drugging and raping people and it was not funny, they deliberately brought the character back in another episode.
When Universe was being promoted the Bridge Boys club (the producers) bragged that it wasn't for their existing fanbase, and they were pretty explicit that they meant the heavily female fanbase of SGA. They were making a show for dudes, instead. Honestly they wanted to have their own BSG and failed.
In response to this bragging, the female fanbase of Stargate didn't watch SGU. Individually some did, but collectively SGU had the lowest ratings among SyFy's shows for female viewers. They told us it wasn't for us and then they got mad that we didn't watch. And blamed us for the show getting cancelled.
The Boys were also pretty blunt that they brought Jewel Stait in because Rachel Luttrell wasn't hot enough any more after she had the baby.
Last but not least, they forced Amanda Tapping to go work on SGA because she was under contract when SG1 ended. She wanted to go do her own show, "Sanctuary" but they insisted she had to keep working on Stargate, and they were angry that she wasn't grateful for the work. I don't recall if Shanks and the other SG1 actors were still in contract at that point, since they all got to leave, maybe they weren't, but it would be notable if they let all the guys out when the show was cancelled but not Amanda.
The āshutting Joe outā thing is actually WAY WORSE because it goes to how Mallozzi dealt with his employees.
TV networks/studios have photographers who take official photographs for publicity purposes. Those images will have a network/studio watermark on them. Most importantly, the actors in the pictures get paid if and when someone licenses the picture for, say, an article about the show.
Mallozzi had a blog where he would share behind-the-scenes stuff from productions, including pictures. Except they werenāt the official, licensed pictures that he would have had to pay to use. They were pictures he took. Without permission.
The license fees werenāt a big deal for the main cast, but for a day player with three lines? This was depriving them of a source of income. So they went to the president of the union on set. Which was Joe Flanigan.
Joe went to Mallozzi as union president to file an official complaint about it. Mallozzi didnāt have a leg to stand on. He was absolutely in the wrong, and thereafter he made a big fuss about how heād definitely asked permission to take these pictures on his blog and it definitely wasnāt violating union rules.
And after that, the producers stopped talking to Joe.
this was so unnecessary. im fucking crying

If you read the fic, leave the kudos. Leave a comment too, if possible. Just do it. It takes a few seconds of your time and it means the world to the writer.
Sincerely, me who just got told that my writing feels like watching a blockbuster movie. I don't care if they were sincere or not, I'll be thinking about that comment for the rest of my life and every time I feel bad about my art, I'll remember that someone once liked it.
Also, however old that fic is, leave the kudos and the comment. I've got fics that are a couple decades old and I love getting comments on them. I love knowing people are still reading them.
granted i havent read lotr since i was 13 but the way legolas joins the fellowship always cracks me up, like hes literally a prince but they sent him as a messenger to basically tell the council like "whoopsiedoodles we fucked up and gollum is gone, that's what you get for entrusting him to the party elves of mirkwood you know how we get" and he feels SO bad he joins this super deadly quest like imagine you're thranduil and you're like "hey son can you go to elrond's house and tell him we fucked up royally" and your son is like sure pops can do but then you don't hear from him for like two months so you call elrond like hey e-dog what's good have you seen my son. and elrond is like. well i dont know how to tell you this but he went on a homoerotic voyage to the most dangerous place on earth. id be so mad
āthen finish it, cause iām with you ātill the end of of the line.ā

Ok breaking containment for this one because I need everyone who will listen to hear this.
Women who suffer bad cramps are told cramps shouldn't affect school/work/etc, but no one ever investigates further because no one can possibly know if what someone experiences is just typical pain or something much worse.
Well after 15 years of stage 4 treatment-resistant endometriosis that came with pain as bad as, if not worse than, actual labor contractions every month, all the while being told I was 'typical' and 'just had bad cramps', I've finally been healed (another post for another time). I have had what everyone describes as the elusive 'normal period pain' for several months now, and I am begging you to look me in the eyes and listen because I need everyone who can hear this to hear this.
I have been on both sides of this. I have the hard-earned knowledge of what a period 'should' feel like.
If you have to put in any effort to hide your cramps, you need to get help.
Even during of the PEAK OF CRAMPING (i.e., as bad as your cramps possibly get), you should still be able to stand, speak, walk, eat, work, and sleep with no problems. These tasks should require very-little-to-no extra effort beyond what you would normally do when you aren't on your period. When you do these things, you should feel grumpy and a little bit icky and maybe a twinge of nerves and NOTHING MORE.
If you have to sit in the corner and hope no one approaches you because you can't speak or stand without showing pain, even slightly, you need to get help. If your pain is showing on your face, you need to get help. And most importantly, IF YOUR PAIN DOES NOT RESPOND TO 1-2 TYLENOL OR IBUPROFEN, YOU NEED TO GET HELP.
Your period cramps should make you grumpy. Your period cramps should make you feel a little icky and tired. Your period cramps should make you feel your insides existing/moving a bit and a twinge of nerves that makes you groan slightly then the "pain" should stop there, NOTHING MORE.
If your cramps put you on the floor but you make believe you're the captain of a ship who has just been stabbed and has to hide it to fight on, and you force yourself to power through the day, please understand: you are not okay, that does not make you okay. Just because you can power through the pain doesn't mean you aren't sick. If you have to force yourself through any basic task beyond the effort it takes you to do when you aren't on your period, and I am holding your face and looking you in the eye as I say this because I need you to hear me: You aren't normal. You don't 'just have bad cramps'. You are sick and you need to get help.
Now most people will tell you if your cramps are beyond a 3 out of 10 on the pain scale, you should see a doctor. While this is usually true, you have to consider chronic pain CAN AND WILL BREAK YOUR PAIN SCALE. Most people will only compare pain they currently feel to pain they may experience one day but probably never will. "Sure these cramps feel bad now, but if I had a leg amputated with no anesthesia, that would hurt WAY worse, so this pain can't be that bad-" No. Your pain is what it is, objectively, full stop. My cramps were at a 10 out of 10 every. Single. Time. And nobody told me claiming they were a 6-8 because I thought to myself 'what if I lose a limb one day?' was completely wrong. 10 pain is 10 pain. And if there's something that hurts worse than that, guess what. The thing you are experiencing right now is still a 10 out of 10 on the pain scale. Just because you experience it every month doesn't mean it's magically not as bad is it is. And if your pain is worse than a 3 out of 10, you need to get help.
Now when I say get help, I mean find the root cause of your pain. You can't just throw drugs and hormones at it without knowing what it causing your pain. Endometriosis, fibroids, pcos, cancer, adenomyosis, polyps, thyroid issues, there is always a cause. And if you leave it untreated, it will grow and get worse to the point where it resists treatment and the drugs and hormones you've been throwing at it for years don't work anymore. You have to find a doctor that will investigate. If your doctor tells you you 'just have bad cramps' get a new doctor. I know you've been told that but please hear me: no one ever just has bad cramps. A healthy human body doesn't spontaneously cause itself pain so bad you can't stand up; there is ALWAYS a cause.
I was sick for more than 15 years. My entire life was put on hold and now I'm in my late 20s trying desperately to play catch up for everything I missed. I want to pick up 12yo me, spin her around, and tell her she doesn't have to die before she finally stops hurting. I don't want anyone to suffer the same fate I did simply because everyone told them they were normal. A little twinge of pain here and there is normal, suffering is not. I promise you your pain is real, it is not normal, and dear heavenly day I am begging you you need to get help now.
TL;DR: There is no such thing as 'just bad cramps.' If you feel anything more than grumpy, icky, and pain greater than a 3 out of 10, you need to find out what's wrong with you before it gets worse.
. Like little to no pain??? What the fuck???

Okay, you know what? After reading this post, I jokingly said we should all just make a pact to reblog it five times a day forever. So I'm gonna do this louder for the people in the back:
AO3 WAS CREATED BY FANS, FOR FANS
AO3 IS RUN BY FANS (VOLUNTEERS, NO LESS)
AO3 IS PART OF THE NON-PROFIT, ORGANIZATION FOR TRANSFORMATIVE WORKS
AO3 IS NOT OWNED BY ANY COMPANIES AND DOES NOT EARN REVENUE
AO3 OPERATES ON DONATIONS FROM FANS
again:
AO3 WAS CREATED BY FANS, FOR FANS
Ao3 is like the one space left where I donāt feel like Iām drowning in capitalism. Thereās no membership fee to access, Iām not assaulted by clickbait ads covering every inch of my screen. Writers are generously gifting their stories. They arenāt beholden to anyoneās schedule but their own, thereās no algorithm to feed or jump through hoops for. They write about the fandoms that inspire them, expanding on worlds or deep diving into character studies. They experiment with tropes and language and style and genre, no matter how āmarketableā it is.
In a world where everything is increasingly commodified and regulated and restricted I cherish this little corner of the internet more fiercely.
