The main "evidence" people always use for the "racist" claim is her name. "Oh, Cho is Korean and Chang is Chinese, J.K. Rowling is an ignorant westerner who thinks all Asian cultures are the same!" Okay, first of all, calm down. In a world with wizards and dragons, we're getting hung up on the etymology of a teenage girl's name? It's a fantasy novel. It's not a documentary on the intricacies of East Asian naming conventions. More importantly, have you ever stopped to think about why this is the hill everyone chooses to die on when it comes to her character? It's because it's a convenient, "woke" excuse to hate her for what she really is: a teenage girl with feelings.

And oh, what a crime those feelings are. God forbid a female character be sad. Cho Chang's boyfriend was murdered by the wizard equivalent of a space Nazi. She was a teenager trying to navigate grief, trauma, and her first real crush all at once. She cries. She's emotional. She's confused. And for this, she is relentlessly mocked and hated. She's called "weepy," "clingy," and "annoying." Meanwhile, Harry can spend entire books being angsty, angry, and moody, and he's the hero. Ron can be sullen and jealous for pages on end, and he's the lovable sidekick. But a girl cries because her boyfriend died and her new crush is emotionally unavailable? She's a monster.

This is pure, unadulterated misogyny. Society is deeply uncomfortable with female emotion, especially female grief. We're taught that it's messy, weak, and unattractive. Cho Chang's character arc is a perfect example of this. She's not "crazy" for being upset that Harry's only interest in her was to get information about Draco Malfoy. She's not "weak" for still being haunted by Cedric's death. She's a human being. The hatred she gets is a reflection of a culture that tells women to bottle up their pain and present a pleasant, agreeable front at all times. When they fail to do that, they are discarded and branded as "hysterical."

The real reason Cho Chang is so controversial is that she refuses to be a simple, one-dimensional prop for the male hero. She has her own inner life, her own trauma, and her own needs that have nothing to do with Harry's journey. She doesn't magically "get over" Cedric to become the perfect, supportive girlfriend for Harry. She's complicated. And in a narrative that often sidelines female characters, that complexity is seen as a flaw.

Magical Law Enforcement Patrol is something much closer to regular police:

Arthur Weasley: "I only hope we can catch whoever’s doing it."

Harry Potter: "Will it be Aurors who catch them?"

A part of Magical Law Enforcement Patrol were also trained Hit Wizards and Witches, meant to help with high-risk arrests, riot control and were often called as help for Aurors to detain Dark Wizards.

Harry is more like a magical detective rather than a policeman.

Another thing I often like to say when it comes to the "he should have been a teacher" discussion is that Harry spent most of his life in fight-flight situations. The boy was high on adrenaline a lot, even before Hogwarts ( with Dudley's gang playing Harry Hunting ). After the war Harry joining Auror forces is like him looking for a familiar environment, where he gets the adrenaline rush in a more controlled way. You could argue that a quidditch career would fit him better, if he needs some adrenaline in his life, but then we can't forget that a big part of who Harry is, is the fact he wants to save people. Harry wants to help, to fight, to make the world better.

Plus let's look who Harry's role models were:

His father, Sirius, Moody, Tonks, Dumbledore - An Auror career was something he wanted ( “Yes?” Professor McGonagall prompted Harry. “Well, I thought of, maybe, being an Auror,” Harry mumbled. ), and also something a lot of people encouraged him for. Meanwhile not only was teaching the DA thrust upon him ( and after it ended Harry expressed no interest in picking it back up ), it was VERY different from an actual job. Teaching purely practical spells to a group of motivated teens, most of whom were his friends, is WAAAAY different than teaching a curriculum of theory & practice, assigning homework and grading papers for seven years of students at once.

House elves are nothing to do with chattel slavery. They are a reference to small, golbin-like creatures from Scottish folklore called brownies who used to come out at night and do housework while humans were asleep. Legends varied, but some of the ways in which they could be driven away was by giving them names or clothing. Sound familiar?

Book 2: Harry destroys the Diary. Now Dumbledore can start really formalizing his theory that 1. Voldemort created a horcrux 2. Voldemort created multiple horcruxes 3. Perhaps Harry is a horcrux on accident then.

Book 4: Voldemort reconstitutes with Harry's blood. Dumbledore can now be fairly certain that Lily's protection lives on in Voldemort as well, and that Harry will likely survive an attack from Voldemort. Dumbledore can also start theorizing that if Harry sacrifices himself willingly, the same magic can then happen again (which he's right about, Harry's love protects his friends in the final battle).

Book 6: Dumbledore has gotten to work at destroying horcruxes by this book. He does this to fight Voldemort and to protect Harry from the task. He is afraid of Voldemort learning that Dumbledore knows his secret, so he keeps his plans secret. He starts teaching Harry info about Voldemort and Horcruxes while keeping his hand hidden. He doesn't want to scare Harry with what Dumbledore thinks is the best method to truly kill Voldemort: that Voldemort unsuspectingly kills a piece of himself inside Harry. Dumbledore realizes he's going to die before he can do most of the work. He destroys the Ring, and gets enough info to suspect the Locket and the Chalice (and the Snake). Dumbledore has Harry get the memory from Slughorn to confirm how many Horcruxes Voldemort was considering.

Dumbledore had no time to eliminate all the Horcruxes, and he would have had to kill a boy he loved, instead of helping Harry potentially survive and protect people while he do it, and fulfill the prophecy (Voldemort will create a living Horcrux and then eliminate that Horcrux himself...neither can live while the other survives etc.)

I know the details you've described, believe me. My argument is that Snape was wrong, Dumbledore did not raise Harry as a pig to the slaughter. Once he understood about the Horcruxes, he -could- have just killed Harry and then destroyed as many remaining Horcuxes as he could while possibly entrust destruction of the rest to any number of other adults, or whatever. But his plan regarding Harry started before he was Cursed by the ring, so that's not relevant anyway.

But if JKR had intended us to see Dumbledore as using Harry as a child soldier who was always intended to die for the great good, that would have been the plot. And it wasn't. As I said above, we get the fantastic reveal of the truth at King's Cross. Dumbledore wasn't using Harry to win the war, he was guiding to him to survive. Death Eaters have fascist/KKK imagery, because they're evil bigots.

And, sure, you can read a message about how war is particularly destructive to children in HP. That's definitely there. But Dumbledore "raising a child soldier like veal" is just not true. It's not a part of his particular complexity.
