Steve promptly forgot about this interaction and Eddie did too…right up until he learned that little girls have superpowers and monsters exist.
Things are looking rough so he nudges Steve like, “It’s now or never, man. Just do it.”
“You’re right. We could die,” Steve says, and then instead of breaking out laser vision or frost breath, he kisses Eddie.

Eddie almost dying in the Upside Down. He doesn’t DIE but the amount of bat exposure changed him. He’s not fully an upside down creature but he’s got wings that come out occasionally and super sharp canines and longer nails.
And if he was insecure before it’s nothing like now. I like going with established Steddie pre-S4 for this one because he definitely gets avoidant after. “No Steve I’m a monster now don’t touch me we have to be over.”

Shortly after Steve and Eddie start dating, the Corroded Coffin guys overhear Steve fawning over Eddie's hair, how pretty the color is, how soft and bouncy his curls are. Steve just pivots to complimenting his ears and the nape of his neck now that he has a better view of them. After the guys hear that, Eddie contemplates wearing a beanie to practice from then on or maybe a paper bag.
