if you’re under 13 you shouldn’t even be on this website. things like COPPA and sites’ TOS exist for a reason. the public forum of the internet is not good for young people. if you’re under 13, log off and go play with legos or something. your childhood is short, don’t waste it on this stupid website.

memes about depression and wanting to die aren’t healthy. get real help if you feel that way. make use of suicide hotlines and textlines.

you have just begun to form a political and philosophical identity that may be different from the one you were raised with. bear in mind that you don’t understand the full situation, and your opinions are subject to change. beware extremism in any form, and educate yourself before expressing opinions online.

you WILL be embarrassed of what you did at age 13, 14, 15, 16. you WILL look back on it and call it cringey. if you don’t, you’re welcome to stop by my blog, tell me “i told you so,” and demand a photo of my dog.

never generalize any group of people, especially in a negative way. tumblr loves to do this. don’t fall for it.

fandom is not a substitute for a personality. don’t build your identity around a piece of media.

when in doubt, don’t post it.

just because it’s a “coping mechanism” doesn’t mean it’s a good one. self-destructive behaviors are coping mechanisms, but they suck and leave you worse off than before. develop healthy coping mechanisms and constructive outlets for your feelings.

educate yourself about human psychology and child development. it helps you understand others a little better, and can clue you in on the patterns of your own behavior.

you probably think you’re mature for your age. you aren’t. sorry, but it’s the truth. don’t pressure yourself to grow up just because the world wants you to. enjoy a simpler view on life while you still can.

you live in the age of google and snopes and instant fact-checking. take advantage of it. don’t be swayed by clickbait, misleading headlines, and even outright false statements on tumblr posts. this website is not a good place to be getting your news and education.

your mutuals aren’t your friends by default.

you are allowed to feel good about yourself. stop calling yourself “trash.” the more you ironically self-deprecate, the more you start to unironically believe it. you aren’t immune to propaganda, even the kind generated by your own brain.

you are not obligated to reblog anyone’s posts, no matter what guilt trippy things they say on it. your blog is yours, and you get to decide what goes on it.

the LGBTQ community on tumblr (and its discourse) is different from the LGBTQ community in real life. tumblr’s outlook is skewed by its demographics, which consist overwhelmingly of young AFAB people. keep that in mind.

avoid tumblr discourse, especially fandom and political discourse.

you don’t have to have your identity figured out right away. take time to self reflect, and try not to stick labels on yourself early on.

you may get messages from random people saying stuff like “hi” or “hey hun.” don’t interact with these people – they are either p*rnbots or predators. both of them are dangerous to you. block and/or report.

don’t do drugs, don’t drink, and don’t smoke. tumblr makes it look cool, it’s not. i don’t care if you think it’s not addicting – it is, and it will damage your developing brain. there’s a reason the drinking age in the US is 21 when legal adulthood is 18 – alcohol fundamentally affects your brain, which doesn’t even finish developing until you’re 25 or so.

photos of beautiful people aren’t representative of what people look like in real life. you don’t have to be beautiful during your teen years – think of yourself as an awkward mid-evolution Pokemon. it’s normal for you to look a little wonky – don’t focus on external beauty.

the advice of older people isn’t crappy by default just because you’re a grumpy teen. use “ok boomer” sparingly.

if you need to, use the block button, unfollow someone, or blacklist a tag. you have needs, and they need to be respected.

don’t look at blogs or scroll through tags that you know upset you. this is mental self-harm. i’m guilty of it, a lot of people are guilty of it without even knowing. respect your needs.

do NOT take nude photos of yourself. do not post them anywhere, and do not send them to anyone. it’s illegal, and could get you and a bunch of other people in serious legal trouble.

share as little information about yourself as possible. the more people know about your personal life, the more dangerous it is for you. your anonymity is a valuable resource for you.

- Communication doesn’t work on bullies. Telling a bully they’re making you feel bad is the wrong way to go. They want to make you feel bad. That’s the point.

- being kind to a bully doesn’t always mean they’ll stop. Sometimes it means they’ll just use your kindness to manipulate you while still continuing to bully you.

- not every bully has a sympathetically tragic home life. Sometimes people are just mean. Sometimes people just get off on hurting others.

- on that note, a tough home life is a reason, not an excuse. You don’t have to put up with bullying because somebody’s life sucks, just like you don’t have to let someone mug you because they’re broke.

- in order to forgive someone, they have to apologize first. If your bully has not apologized to you, you do not owe them anything.

- getting bullied as a kid can still mess you up in adult life. Maybe kids grow out of being bullies, but the marks they left often don’t go away.

- there are ways to get people to stop bullying you, but they almost all involve being mean back.

- getting bullied as a kid can even mess you up as a teen

- ignoring does not work. it does not make them go away. it’s a lie told to make kids less “”problematic””
