Trapeliopsis wallrothii

This squamulose/crustose-placodioid lichen has a felty pale gray to greenish-white thallus of scale-like, swollen lobes. It produces granular to wart-like isidia which break off and leave dark scars across the lobe surface. It seldomly produces apothecia, which are pink to red-brown to brown-black in color, clustered, and irregular to globose in shape. T. wallrothii grows on compacted, rocky soil and moss in Europe and Macaronesia.

Over the centuries the location of Pompeii was lost, and it was found again by accident during construction projects. The ruins were not conclusively identified as the city of Pompeii until the 18th century (more than a millennia and a half after the eruption!) and it has been excavated ever since. People have been digging there since before the formation of the United States.
