I think one of the things that really gets to Hawkeye is that by being in Korea in the first place, he is contributing to the war (s9e2 Letters), but even by leaving, he can't take away from the war. And he knows this from experience!! Trapper can leave, Henry can die, but the war and pain can't be eased by anything (s9e12 Depressing News). The war will never end, even after peace is declared because the war has fundamentally changed everyone involved. Those mines will be in the ground waiting to kill until the day they each go off. And the time that each person spends at the mash will forever be part of their lives, even if they choose to dealing with the psychological impact of the war, it will leave a crater and scar just like the landmines.
