Figuring It Out
Fandom: Good Omens
Pairing: Aziraphale/Crowley
Rating: E
Spring has come to London, and with it, fresh possibilities. Anthony Crowley--determined to finally follow through on old dreams--signs up for a couple of classes as he tries to revisit what he loves best, get out of a rut, and get back into his career as a freelancer. Aziraphale works as a librarian not far from St. Lucius' School of Fine Art, and when his neighbour and friend, Anathema, asks if he would be interested in a little side-gig as one of the life models for her Intermediate Figure Drawing class, he agrees.
That's not going to awaken things in anyone, right?

Before the publican could reply, a tall, slender woman with dark, auburn hair tied up in a messy bun strode up to the bar. Azira felt the hair on her arms stand up, almost as if she had received a mild shock from the electrical energy of the woman standing beside her. âI called in a takeaway, Marjorie. Is it ready?â âJust a minute, dearie. Iâll go check.â With a mischievous look, she nodded toward Azira. âToni, this is Azira. Sheâs checking out Tadfield to decide if she wants to move here.â
Turning her attention to the other woman, she continued, âToni Crowleyâs been here five years. She knows everyone in town. You should ask her your questions. Sheâll tell you everything the tourist board wonât.â With a wink, she turned to enter the kitchen. âSo, what do you want to know? Looking to find all the sordid corners of Oxfordshire or to avoid them?â
(Or, While listening to an address by someone very precious to her, Azira Fell reflects on the one in a trillion surprise from the universe that brought her more love than she could have ever hoped for.)

I wrote "The Importance of Being Mr. Brown" for the TIC6 zine. It's a short story affirming everyone deserves love, even those who love the Ineffable Husbands too much. Rated T, about 2,800 words.
Sometimes an angel needed saving from the guillotine or Nazi spies, and sometimes he needed saving from ordinary humans. Particularly from the Mr. Browns of the world, the ones too smitten or too foolish to realize how taken Aziraphale was. God must love them, for although theyâd left one Mr. Brown in his World of Carpets on Wickber Street, their village contained a Mr. Browne, with an âeâ at the end. This one was an English teacher, which was worse because he mistook Aziraphaleâs interest in books for interest in him. Someone bless it, the blond human was following Aziraphale back to their table, and Crowleyâs husband was doing nothing to discourage him.

Crowley and Aziraphale were never supposed to be special. The whole point of their story was that they were just two beings sent on Earth with a job, who really loved avoiding doing said job, and who learned a thing or two from humanity along the way.
S2 seemed to double down on that. Other angels and demons could fall in love. Other angels, like Muriel, could like the Earth. Other demons, like Shax, could be surprised by humanity's cruelty. If anything, the story seemed to be leading towards the realization that if angels and demons just gave a chance to humanity, to love, to connection, they could all be happier for it.
So to toss it all out of the window to make Crowley and Aziraphale the special boys who get to rewrite the universe, while all other angels and demons get rewritten as humans without having a say in the matter... It feels like a betrayal.
In both of my S2 and S3 fix-its, I set up a Neutral or Third Alignment that other angels and demons can choose to join.

i hate that iâm not over the gomens finale yet. i want to be a much stronger person. i want to be like oh well itâs just a tv show and canon doesnât mean anything and i am. i do. mostly. like 70% of the time. or so. idk. and then thereâs a wave of grief just crashing over me again
Right there with you. Itâs not âjust a TV show,â is the way I think about it. Itâs all the real-life things this story connects with, all of the real-life hopes and fears and sorrows, all of the pieces of ourselves.
I do love the book, but from the time I saw the show, I saw that These Characters As Portrayed were everything and must be allowed to be happy.
No matter how much projecting we are doing, the idea that these traumatised, lovely, clever, anxious beings that distanced themselves from their people because they couldn't go along with them, and who are exactly the kind that our society has less and less tolerance for-- that they could succeed and heal together happily? It was everything. I don't know if it hurt more that they-as-themselves failed, or how they did, or how they were first contorted into uncanny imitations of themselves first to rip apart the parts of our souls who love them so dearly by not being who we think know they are and taint not only their present (recent?) selves but also themselves through the entire canon? There's a post somewhere on Tumblr that through loving characters we identify with, we learn to love ourselves. What happens now?
i donât know where we go now. but i found this comment very comforting. letâs go there and hold hands

On a meta level, Good Omens S3 was EMOTIONAL ABUSE.
... Meaning, I'm pretty sure Neil Gaiman did it ON PURPOSE, knowing how much it would upset the fans.
Neil knew how badly we wanted Aziraphale and Crowley (OUR version of Aziraphale and Crowley---the specific version of them we met in Season 1) to be together. He knew we wanted to see them resolve their issues and ultimately choose to be with each other in the end.
Instead, Aziraphale and Crowley forgo that emotional journey in favor of unnecessary pain. Neither of them experience real character growth in the finale; they are shown to be the worst and unhappiest versions of themselves, without getting a real shot at redemption. They never fix their communication issues. They don't express their true, authentic feelings for one another (don't @ me with that bullshit hand kiss thing). They never manage to get on the same page emotionally---even when they both agree to commit suicide (which I'm pretty sure was not the "one thing" Aziraphale wanted).
"Why give me Crowley? Why make me complete and then take it away?"
EMOTIONAL WITHHOLDING is a common abuse tactic utilized by men like Neil. They enjoy creating ATTACHMENT in their victims and then "TAKING IT AWAY".
It's easy to see how much Neil enjoyed frustrating his fans in retrospect. He actively taunted us on social media with the catchphrase "WAIT AND SEE" and threatened to make Aziraphale and Crowley kiss---but in a way we "wouldn't like". He loved dangling the implied promise of a happy ending over our heads, which we now know he never planned to deliver on.
Neil was unkind to his audience. He was also unkind to his characters. Aziraphale and Crowley are treated as punching bags throughout the entire series---shown to be "messy" for the sake of entertainment, but not as a real obstacle for either of them to overcome. God herself says she enjoys seeing how much Aziraphale values his relationship with Crowley. And this turns out to be her justification for "taking it away". (Tell me THAT isn't some fucked up shit.) Aziraphale and Crowley experience real emotional pain as the result of her actions---and this is demonstrated by the incredible acting of Michael Sheen and David Tennant.
Neil explicitly sold this as "a love story" when he created the show. Based on the tone of the book, an eventual union between Aziraphale and Crowley would have made the most narrative sense. It would have emphasized the overarching themes of love, agency, and the futility of "choosing sides". But that would have required Neil to possess the same ethos as Terry Pratchett---meaning LOVE AND RESPECT FOR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS.
We were never going to get a good love story out of Neil. Men like Neil get off on "PUNISHING" people for no apparent reason; he obviously did this with our beloved characters, to disastrous result. Nonetheless, we still manage to ascribe deeper meaning to Aziraphale and Crowley, thanks to the phenomenal acting team and the dedication of this fandom. Aziraphale and Crowley remain the greatest love story of all time, not because of anything Neil actually wrote, but because of everything that was projected onto them by the people who cared. We assigned their relationship a depth "Neil himself" never could have imagined---one that exemplifies our maximalist ideals of love and the decision to choose it again and again, in spite of everything. It is never going to "end" on Neil's preferred terms. In this rare instance, fan interpretation STILL MANAGES TO ECLIPSE THE SOURCE MATERIAL---and that is because LOVE is always a more powerful story than ABUSE.

June 1, 2026: Travelers' Tales
Happy Pride Month!Â
I was going to pick my favorite Pride-related stories for this month, then I decided you are going to have no trouble finding those stories. I might even offer a few of my own.Â
The travelers in these tales are restless. They donât know how to settle down, nor do they think they want to. They havenât stopped moving for some time. Then they meet someone who makes them reconsider.Â
Coming up with themes and ways stories are connected isnât always easy or obvious. But somehow, these three stories fell together immediately.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
The June Fic Recs
1 Corinthians 13 1-13 by ffinoppop @ffonippop
Rated: M
Published: February 2024, 21K words, 1/1 chapters
Summary: Restless traveler, Aziraphale Fell, meets settled-down Anthony Crowley in middle-of-nowhere, Texas. Aziraphale goes through life flitting from place to place, never staying long. He runs on the belief that if heâs not going, heâs missing out on something better. Crowleyâs life is stationary. He keeps himself rooted with the belief that his life is the best itâs ever going to get, and to go would be to risk that. Aziraphale has to go. Crowley has to stay. They have to take what they can get from each other, and that needs to be enough.
My Take: Iâve read this story at least three times now. Each time I get a little more from it. The central question here is, what do you do when you are terribly in love and yet that isnât enough to make you change who you believe you are at your core? Can one person ever be enough to make you give up everything else? Should they be? Itâs something a lot of us have struggled with. Itâs very well done, heartbreaking, and the ending makes more sense than you might expect.Â

Published: March 2024, 70K words, 22/22 chaptersÂ
Summary: When Anthony Crowley meets Aziraphale Fell at Aziraphale's library, little do they know that they will turn each other's worlds upside down. After a magical week spent falling in love, they face a hard reality. Will they be able to make the choices they need to make to build a real life together?
My Take: Iâve read this one several times, too. Imagine my delight when I finally realized the author was my friend Thingy! It takes me a while sometimes. (Those of you who remember my story about my bday fic written by @brenna will understand.)
This story has so many great tropes: strangers to friends to lovers, long-distance relationship struggles, commitment issues, secrets, misunderstandings, jealousy. And of course my BIG requirement: a happy ending.
Here, the problem is Crowley canât seem to stop moving, to settle into a relationship, to commitâeven though it appears he wants to. It takes a while to find out why. When you do, be ready for a bit of heartbreak before the guaranteed happy ending.Â
Buddy Boating by CuriousPupsicle @curiouspupsicle

Summary: Azira Fell is happy sailing solo and living aboard her sailboat, Meander, with her cat Oscar. Toni Crowley is happy sailing solo and living aboard her sailboat, Siren. What will happen when the two independent cruisers meet?
My Take: This is the femme Good Omens human AU you never knew you needed. Hell, until I betaâd it, I didnât even know I needed it. But I did, and so do you.
CuriousPupsicle knows her boats (she lived aboard for years; donât ask me about it, Iâm not the expert) and makes you feel as if you are there when you read any of her sailing stories. This isnât an adventure story like Anchored (also an excellent story, but much different). This is a lazy, slow, will-they-or-wonât-they summer romance, perfect for reading right about now. Other GO characters pop up (Tracy and Shadwell as long-time sailing friends, Gabriel as, well, Gabriel) and the whole thing feels like a comfort read the first time you read it.Â
Okay, that's it for June. We'll be well into summer by the time I write my next set of fic recs. Maybe something about vacations? Or maybe something on the water? We'll see what floats my boat. (See what I did there? Yeah?)
I'm cross-posting this to my main blog for those who might be seeing this twice. Just so you know.

Itâs not right, yet. But itâs getting there.

"There's got to be another way."
I refuse to believe they'd do this grrr
Nope, I still can't convince myself that there's any true version of Aziraphale who would say to his best friend, dearest enemy, and companion of six thousand years, "I liked you better when you had a respectable job and went by your deadname."

Just finished my canon-divergent S3 fix-it in which Aziraphale doesnât open the Bookshop to Satan, so Aziraphale and Crowley have a chance to truly reconcile before facing God and Satan. Rated T.
Create a Third Place
https://archiveofourown.org/works/85279461/chapters/225206521
Aziraphale walked to the door of the Bookshop and peered at the void outside. He reached for the sign, ready to flip it over. Someone might want to buy a book pounded in his mind like a compulsion. It didnât make sense; he was a retired bookseller, after all. And since when had he ever wanted to sell any of his books?
From several yards behind him, Crowley said, âAs far as I can tell, the entirety of creation is us and this bookshop. I donât think youâre going to get many customers.â
Staring at his timeless beloved, Aziraphale forced himself to let the sign fall back into the âClosedâ position. The door rattled like a protest, but this was still his Bookshop, so he glared at the door until it quieted.
Aziraphale and Crowley are selfish, and thatâs exactly why I love them
They were never supposed to be martyrs for humanity, and that was the point. Every motive they had to save the earth came from selfishness.
They loved through hedonism. They loved humanity, loved earthly pleasures, and more than anything they loved each other. They donât even fully consider meddling in the apocalypse until Crowley brings up THEIR life, wines, restaurants, parks.
Aziraphale fully intended to blow up a kid to save his life on earth. Crowley took a pause as the world was ending, just to mourn his car, and even then, he only stops time to save the earth because Aziraphale had threatened to ânever talk to him againâ if he didnât do something about it. Crowley asks Aziraphale to run away from earth with him, leave it all behind. Even in Aziraphale going to heaven, it was to keep THEIR lives safe, to prevent further action from Heaven that would sully their perfect life on earth.
The both of them disobeyed their superiors, time and time again, knowing it would likely kill them, all for their life together.
And thatâs why I just donât believe it, the end of it all. The idea that Aziraphale and Crowley, hedonistic, selfish, bastards worth knowing they are, that when faced with a choice between keeping their lives as they were, or complete and utter erasure, that they would choose the latter?
No. I disagree entirely.
Both seasons, 1 and 2, they have been established as these individuals, with these beliefs, and these convictions and what not. To just go against that?? Entirely??? If I had the responsibility to pick up a story that didnât belong to me, getting the characterâs beliefs right is like the FIRST THING IM DOING. Iâm analyzing, Iâm scouring, Iâm getting that shit right, because if I donât, then itâs not the same story, NONE OF IT MATTERS.
Perhaps that is the rant complete. To summarize my scatter brain, they have been established hedonists for both seasons 1-2, if there was any pair of characters across the characters multiverse Iâd expect to NOT sacrifice their lives, itâd be Aziraphale and Crowley, maybe for each other, but for NOTHING ELSE.
So yeah đ
