We were supposed to take road trips together

see the wilderness in far off places

touch grass that we’ve never touched before

put our hands on trees that we’d just discovered

skip rocks over creeks from the bed

use our stars as night lights

while our fingers brush out

the days’ adventures from our hair.

Camping together out of the back of a van

we’d spent ourselves building from scratch

imbued with our spirits to make sure we arrived

at every stop along our path

With all the built-in pockets and hideaways

for the treasures we gathered in our way
