Rough notes on Grace’s age
Chronologically
If he was 30 when the Hail Mary launched:
+ 13 years to reach Tau Ceti (43 yrs)
+ 12 years for Beetles to reach Earth (55 yrs)
+ 16 years for light to reach Erid (71 yrs)
= he was born 71 years ago as of the Epilogue.
Biologically
If he was 30 when the Hail Mary launched:
+ 4 years to reach Tau Ceti (34yo)
+ 3 years to reach Erid (37yo)
Beetles arrive at Earth within a year
+ 16 years for light to reach Erid (53yo)
= he has experienced 53 years as of the Epilogue.
Note 1: I am rounding numbers.
Note 2: I am assuming the Beetles are designed to travel closer to the speed of light.
Note 3: It took years plural to build and launch the Hail Mary. Therefore the oldest Grace could have been when joining the Petrova Taskforce was 28.
Earth Timeline
When Grace arrives at Erid/the Beetles arrive at Earth, Grace has only experienced 7 years, but everyone on Earth has experienced 25 years.
Grace’s kids were 12 when he last saw them. If it took 2 years to build and launch the Hail Mary, they would be 39 when the Beetles return to Earth (older than Grace, who is 37).
If other members of the Petrova Taskforce were ~30 years old at time of launch, they would now be ~55 years old.
The Future
If Grace travelled to Earth from Erid, it would take ~17 chronological years, but 4 biological years.
That means if Grace left Erid as soon as he saw Sol’s light return, he would be 57 years old when he arrived at Earth.
It will have been ~58 years since he left. Which means Grace’s kids would be ~72 years old.
If other members of the Petrova Taskforce were ~30 years old at time of launch, they would now be ~88 years old.
Alternate Universe
If Grace returned to Earth from Tau Ceti instead of going to Erid, he would be 38 years old when he arrived at Earth.
While Grace would have experienced 8 years, everyone on Earth would have experienced 26 years.
If this Grace launched the Beetles from Tau Ceti, Earth would have had 1 year to work on the astrophage problem before Grace arrives.
Additional thoughts:
Grace describes himself as being, “in his thirties,” while on the Hail Mary. This aligns with the maths above.
However, in a flashback at the start of the book, Grace says he was in grad school, “nearly twenty years ago.” Obviously, Grace wasn’t getting his doctorate at age eight-ten.
My theory is that Weir initially intended for Grace (and some other named characters) to be in their forties, but backtracked towards the end of the book so that if he wrote a sequel, it would be possible for some of them to still be alive if Grace returned to Earth. And then forgor about that one line.
Less strong as evidence, but early in the book, Grace describes Stratt as being, “in her mid-forties.” And while it’s possible for everyone to assume Grace was in an age-gap relationship, it was probably intended to place them close in age to make that assumption seem more plausible.
