In the UK, this is especially maddening. We pride ourselves on not having a register of people, at all. Nor of names. It is a strong legal precedent that "your name is what you are called, not some immutable characteristic. If you can show that you are called something, that's your name now, you can tell anybody to update it and they must"
Same goes for titles. Do you see why I am going insane over the fact that nobody even entertains that gender could be done the same way.

Can everyone who makes video content do a Deaf bitch a favor? Watch your shit with the captions on and the sound off, and then do another round of editing to fix things including but not limited to:
Captions cover the spot on the screen you put the information I need
The dialogue is captioned but not the song you have playing that the dialogue is responding to
You only captioned the person on the screen, not the person off screen who is also talking
No captioning of critical sound effects (alarms, bells, dogs barking, etc)
Speakers are not labelled at moments where it is not clear on the screen who is talking.
Captions cover the spot on the screen that you put the information I need!

This post brought to you by the fifth video tutorial I could not follow because the bad, auto-generated captions covered what I was trying to watch today.
I use captions constantly and whenever I have to turn them off for a section to read I think about how the video is just impossible to watch if you need the captions. And for those saying move them, I do! I have figured out a specific placement and scaling of captions that works well with cracking the cryptic videos for example. I have found a transparency that let's me see parts of an image through it while still being able to read.
But sometimes the entire screen is covered in text and there's speech, and this makes it impossible to find a place for captions. Or the free space for then changes and you can't keep dragging them around, there are videos where I swap between captions on the bottom and top like 3 times, then it's uncomfortable at the top because I'm not used to it, and then I give up.
And it's not like it's impossible to do it right, watch any Tom Scott video and you see it all done near perfectly. Coloured by speaker, includes relevant details like pronunciation and noises, preserves wordplay by having the caption change out, positioned in free space, and near the speaker if relevant. And most importantly, there always is free space for them to be in!
I've been seeing a lot of posts lately that tell dropouts "you can always go back!"
And that's not bad! It's true for a lot of people! You CAN go back later! You can apply to university, you can get your GED, you can pursue whatever level of education you want. It's not bad to share that message. If you dropped out and want to go back eventually, there is zero timeline. You can go back at any age, with any life experience. You do not have to graduate by a specific age.
But as someone who dropped out of college over a decade ago, sometimes "you can always go back!" starts to feel a little like an empty platitude. Sometimes it starts to feel grating instead of hopeful. Even when it might technically be true, sometimes it still feels like a hollow sentiment.
I just want to say, to anyone else out there who feels that way, who dropped out and CAN'T go back, potentially EVER, whether it's due to poverty or disability or any other reason:
It's okay to drop out and never go back. It might feel shitty, and you may even feel grief over it. That's real, and painful, and allowed. But you are not lesser. Even if you never go back, you are not a failure or a loser. Academics do not define your worth. You are not stupid. And it is almost certain that the system actually failed YOU.

in the situation where I dropped out, I had 1 year to go back, and then the government wouldn't pay for it anymore. I didn't. And so now I can't afford to go back if I wanted to, and my only option would be to self-teach and pay for only the exams, which is very hard and still expensive. And this isn't uni, this is the stage before uni. I am basically financially locked out of ever finishing sixth form, and thus going to uni.
And I do not care, I dropped out for a reason, even if it is physically possible for me to go back, I don't wanna be reminded of that, I much rather would like sympathy over the fact that I did drop out! And to focus on what options I have in spite of it, and what I gained from the extra year of my life si clawed back.
