masks as a signifier of deceit or attempting to hide something is Out. masks being used to represent stepping into one's own identity and not one foisted upon them is the new hit craze
masked character removing their mask in front of someone as a sign of trust: boring, overdone, reinforces the idea of the mask as the "fake" identity and the "real" face as the "true" identity
masked character's mask accidentally comes off in front of someone but they look away to avoid seeing their face as a sign of trust and respect: now we're cooking with gas
fuck it I will make this my Disability Pride Month Request: if you are able-bodied, or just unfamiliar, look up the prices of things. Look up what life-sustaining medication costs, look up what good manual¹ and any power wheelchairs cost, look up what corrective surgery and accessible vehicles and home meal delivery services and service dog training and special dietary restriction food costs. and look up how much money is available for people who can't work.
how many months of government support does it take to afford something like a power wheelchair if you're someone who needs one to get out of bed? how much expense is incurred while saving up for that, making sure you still get food, cleaning, other appointments while you're saving up? is it enough to pay rent? is it enough to still have nice meals, streaming subscriptions, a new video game? is it enough to help family or friends cover emergencies? are there resources available to help with dating, girl's nights, family events if you can't do it all yourself? how in demand are those services, how far in advance do they have to be reserved, how much do they cost?
I've had a few posts about disability get relatively well-shared at this point, and there's always an element of surprise in it - like, what do you mean there's subscriptions, what do you mean it's that expensive, isn't there something else? - and while I understand why, it would really mean a lot if people who don't know about this stuff took the initiative to find out just how bad some of this shit is on their own time
¹ and not just the folding ones on Amazon, which are still expensive, but which I can say from experience are also really uncomfortable and not suited for full time use

Uh.. Mummy?
Thatās honestly a new one for me
I got vampire, which tracks because Iāve never been beating the allegations of wanting to be a blood doll.
I always thought Reddit was a place where people could share things they created.A few days ago I posted one of my original paintings. People loved it. We had wonderful conversations about art, emotions, and how everyone saw something different in the same sunset.
About two hours later I was permanently banned from r/MadeMeSmile for āself-promotion.ā
I accepted that different communities have different rules. But then something even stranger happened.Soon afterward, a moderator from r/pics started going through my account. Not just the new postāmany of my older painting posts disappeared as well. One after another. Then I was permanently banned there too.
Maybe it was the same moderator. Maybe it wasnāt. I honestly donāt know.
What surprised me wasnāt even the ban itself. It was realizing how much power individual moderators have over what millions of people are allowed to see. One decision can erase years of posts from a community and instantly cut off your ability to participate, even if those posts had been happily sitting there for months or years.Iām not saying moderators shouldnāt have rules. Communities need moderation. But it does make you wonder where the line is between protecting a community and allowing a single interpretation of the rules to completely reshape what people can share.
The funny part?
I wasnāt advertising anything in those posts. I wasnāt posting prices or asking anyone to buy anything. I was simply sharing my original paintings because I enjoy discussing art with strangers from around the world.
Anywayā¦
Hereās the painting that apparently caused all the trouble. šØ
at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
at some point in your life you will be adding a small pasta to a soup and you will think "that is not enough small pasta." this is the devil talking. the pasta will absorb the stock and expand. this is how you end up with a soup that is a solid mass of soggy ditalini.
At some point in your life you will be adding garlic to a dish and you will think "that is not enough garlic." These are angels speaking. They are correct. Add more garlic.
I drew these emo cats

A little advice from someone studying extremist groups: if youāre in a social media environment where the daily ubiquitous message is that you have no hope of any kind of future and you canāt possibly achieve anything without a violent overthrow of society, youāre being radicalized, and not in the good way.
If the solution to your problems sounds like āwe need a blank slateā itās a lie. There are no blank slates, and the closest approximation people can generally imagine is āburn it all down and let God/fate/history sort it outā.
Thatās not problem solving. Itās barely catharsis, in practice. It doesnāt just create more problems than it solves, it destroys more solutions than it creates.
Put the apocalypse down, and back away slowly.
Real solutions to complex, systemic problems are not so easily reduced to āus good, them evil; kill them.ā

Voting as Fire Extinguisher
When the haunted house catches fire: a moment of indecision.
The house was, after all, built on bones, and blood, and bad intentions.
Everyone who enters the house feels that overwhelming dread, the evil that perhaps only fire can purge.
Itās tempting to just let it burn.
And then I remember:
there are children inside.

TO THROW A WRENCH IN THE BLOOD MACHINE: Five (Season-Appropriate) Metaphors for Voting
by Kyle āGuanteā Tran Myhre
VOTING AS PRESSURE ON THE WOUND: After the battle against the killer robots, I become aware that my leg is bleeding. And I know that applying pressure does not, on its own, heal the wound, but it will buy time for the medic to arrive, for the healing to begin.
VOTING AS FIRE EXTINGUISHER When the haunted house catches fire: a moment of indecision. The house was, after all, built on bones, and blood, and bad intentions. Everyone who enters the house feels that overwhelming dread, the evil that perhaps only fire can purge. Itās tempting to just let it burn. And then I remember that there are children inside.Ā
VOTING AS THIS ONE SMALL THING Iāve tracked the werewolf to its lair, deep in the basement of the old doll factory just outside town. Upon entering, I have the option of flipping the light switch fromĀ offĀ toĀ on. Either way, the battle will be difficult. Either way, victory is not guaranteed. But the werewolf can see in the dark, and I canāt. So I will do this one small thing. I will summon what light I can. And I will keep going.
VOTING AS HIGH GROUND, CLEAR SIGHT LINES, AND MULTIPLE ESCAPE ROUTES Itās been said that during the zombie apocalypse, the undead are not the biggest threat, that theĀ real monstersĀ are the human survivors who will hoard resources, betray one another, and fight endlessly amongst ourselves. And itās true: survival is about so much more than just not getting eaten by zombies. ButĀ not getting eaten by zombiesĀ is still an important part of the plan.
VOTING AS WRENCH IN THE BLOOD MACHINE Our village has existed in the shadow of Draculaās castle for years, and has been the site of many battles against him. Now, heās running for mayor. His platform: rather than turning into a giant bat to hunt his victims one-by-one, he will take control of the villageās resources, its watchmen and bureaucratic machinery, creating a system that will more efficiently identify victims and supply him with fresh blood.
Will defeating Dracula at the polls end his reign of terror? No. But what it will do is deprive him of oneĀ specificĀ set of tools that he will otherwise use to hurt people. It will allow us to think offensively rather than defensively, because when the forces of darkness are not knocking on our doors, it frees us up to go knock on theirs.
And yes: there is always more work to be done. There is always more horror beyond that which is right in front of us.
And those who study monsters are right: if we only think short-term, we lose.
But those whoĀ fightĀ monsters have taught me: short-term and long-term thinking are not mutually exclusive. We useĀ everyĀ tool we have access to, every opportunity to shape the terrain of battle, every advantage we can seize. We donāt split up. We donāt leave anyone behind. We donāt wait for some hero to save us, whether a knight in shining armor or an opposition politician.Ā WeĀ fight the monsters. And when the sun rises, we do the work of creating a world in which there are no monsters.
We win. For the fallen, for our families, for the fact that dawn is not promised, it is carriedāin this blood, still hot, still coursing, defiant,Ā insideĀ us.
no fucking way
