currently trying to not become overwhelmed with the concept of how much information can be lost on the internet. one day you might wake up and find that your favorite fic has been deleted. or that your favorite artist has completely purged their gallery with no warning. or a site you visited so often is now going down due to being unable to keep up with costs. and yes some of these things can be mitigated by downloading them yourself. you can download your favorite fic. you can download your favorite pieces of your favorite artist. websites can vary but usually there's a way to download or archive it or something. but at the same time you can't do that with literally everything you've ever liked. i'm looking at so many broken links and their broken embeds and i'm just left wondering. how many of these were my favorite a some point? how many of them were just okay but i wanted to save them for the future just in case? there are some times where i'll go back to something i really liked only to see that the link has rotted. and i don't know if it's worse to think that it's permanently gone forever or if it might just be lingering out there somewhere. if it's gone forever, then that sucks, but at least i can accept the fact that it's gone forever and get over it. maybe i remember it as better than it was, and it would only be a disappointment if i found it again. but on the other hand, it's really tempting to want to believe that a copy of it still exists somewhere. with how unfathomably vast the internet is, surely it must have been reuploaded somewhere else, or at the very least someone must have downloaded a copy for themself. so there is hope of finding it, but there are just innumerably many sites to check and users to ask that it may effectively be impossible, but the belief that it is technically possible can leave you constantly itching with that feeling that it can be found if you just know the right keyword and right site and right user. they're both bad and all this does is make me want to archive everything which as stated before is completely impractical. so i'm just left to sit with this feeling of information rotting all around me
