Some advice I got when I was starting out as a photographer
It’s absolutely okay to give a discount, but the full price should still be listed on the invoice, then list the discount they’re receiving and make the subtotal the price after discount.
When people only ever see the price after discount with no real understanding of how much the discount was it’s easy to devalue the work/product/craft they’re getting.
If you worry people won’t charge that much because you’re new, offer them a new customer discount to offset the cost, at least that way they know they’re getting a deal.
Make sure you do the same for friends and family as well! When I offer discounts to friends and family I tell them how much it cost me in materials, how much I would normally charge, then tell them they can pick any number in between the two that fits within their budget. If I need my time compensated in some way I’d put that under what it cost to make the product/provide the service.
At minimum you should be making sure your expenses are covered. A good rule of thumb if you aren’t super worried about charging for your time is to charge at least enough to cover your expenses on the item you’re selling and to cover enough materials to do a second and that price can be your “sale” price listed next to the full price which would include payment for your time.
