i see where youâre coming fromâand iâm not trying to start an argument or anything, just continuing the discussion. i agree that not everything on the 86 list is groundbreaking cinema. i mean, a staple elements of 80s films are cheesiness, bad effects, etc. but theyâre /original/. correct me if iâm wrong but i believe the only remake on the 86 list is the fly and the only sequel is karate kid ii. meanwhile, the only movie on the 21 list that ISNT a remake or a sequel or a sequel of a remake is free guy (and jungle cruise, but thatâs essentially a dwayne johnson adaptation of the african queen. so.)
another thing is cultural impact. even without having seen everything on the 86 list, i recognize every title. many of those movies are still viewed and loved today whether that be for nostalgia reasons or because theyâre genuinely good. i havenât heard about no way home (arguably the most âinfluentialâ movie on the list) in months and it came out in DECEMBER. in 40 years from now there arenât going to be people lovingly looking back on free guy the same way people do with ferris buellerâs day off.
also, like. the majority on that list are owned by disney. thereâs no originality. no individual voice or wit or charm that separates them from the others. thatâs not to claim that every movie from the 86 list was some indie passion project that managed to make it bigâthere were corporations then and there are corporations now, but the industry being smaller back then is exactly what helped movies feel more distinguished. there were more than the same 25 people getting cast in each film, there were different people under different companies/studios allowed to get their input into the final script, better set and costume design because movies didnât use CGI for everything yet, etc etc. like i said in the tags, nothing iâm saying is new, but that doesnât mean i think itâs a conversation not worth having . film as a medium has a potential to be so so impactful and i hate to see that impact slip from the mainstream
