DISCLAIMER: this is MY PERSONAL OPINION, this is not meant to attack anyone who reads or writes x reader age gap content. read what you want, write what you want, this is just what I think about that type of content.

i am not ashamed to admit that i like to read x reader (whether it's fem, masc, or gn depends on my own gender at a given moment) and a lot of times, i'll stumble upon some age gap ficlets/fics(?). sometimes the age gap is only like 5 years or something, but a lot of times it'll be 15+ years where the reader is 18-20 and the character is in their 40s.

...yeah, it doesn't sit right with me at all. my personal belief on age gap relationships IRL are as follows:

high school (14-18): aim not to date anyone more than 1.5 years older. a bit of that is so you have time to gain experience on your own, and also because if you're a freshman and some senior is trying to hit on you, that's not a great sign and it could get that senior in some pretty serious legal trouble if they're 18 and have nudes or dirty messages with a 14 year old (or anyone underage)

college age (18-24): stick to people no more than 2 or 3 years older, so you still have time to learn how to adult without some weirdo using your barely-of-age status as a chance to pull some weird shit

25 and older: at this point, your brain is fully developed and you're an adult capable of making decisions, so do what you want but make sure you communicate what you want, and, if it's a relationship with a relatively significant age gap (i'd say maybe 8+ years), be sure to consider what you both want and what you're okay with.

for me, i think a lot of those values are projected into what i feel when i read something with any kind of age gap. and then there's taking into account a bit of realism, because there's no universe where a 48 year old man dating an 18 year old isn't problematic 💀. i'm well aware that realism isn't that important when making any sort of fanfiction, but i always find it weird when these super unrealistic age gaps pop up.

also, in a lot of those the reader is portrayed as some fragile little angel who's never even heard of sex or anything like that??? frankly that's just dumb, because the chances that there's an 18 year old, fresh out of HIGH SCHOOL who has no idea what sex is are so ridiculously minute that it's pretty much impossible. they might be a little reckless about sex, but they will know what it is.

so basically, the reader is being infantilized, which grosses me out a lot. if it's a kink or something, i don't care as long as there's implication of a prior discussion and kink negotiation in which both people consented to it and established a safe word, but even then i still wouldn't read it because that just feels like projecting pedophilia.
