Qui Gon and Anakin argue about the question of attachment (they are both secretly married) (Obi Wan and Padme think that their husbands are silly)
One of these days Iāll finish jedi apprentice and post my qui-gon jinn analysis and how the fandom has assassinated his character but that day is not today

Fic Reading Stats - February 2025
I always break the AO3 Wrapped bots with the sheer number of fics I read in a year, so this year, I've decided to keep a manual record (thanks AO3 history!) in a spreadsheet and see what happens.
It was a bit of a lighter reading month this month, and not just because there were three less days in the month. I spent almost a week languishing in a hospital bed, not really doing anything because I was so hopped up on painkillers, so thatās a thing that happened, and I ended up averaging around five fics a day. The word count was still pretty high though, because I read some absolute whoppers (including a fic with almost a million words!) I also read quite a few actual books (around eight shorter novellas and two relatively long novels). Work is starting to slow down at the moment thought as Australia heads into autumn, which is always part of working in the area that I do, so Iāll probably have lots more reading time on my hands soon.
Once again, my top read fandom was Star Wars (shocking absolutely no one) but I had a bit more variety this month (including Trainspotting again, as well as Velvet Goldmine, Moulin Rouge, and various RPF fandoms) and I branched out into different types of Star Wars fics after re-watching The Mandalorian earlier in the month, which is probably why BobaDin crept so far up the ships list.
Quiobi was my top read ship again, but Obikin has been dethroned by Bobadin, Jangobi, and Codywan ā also there were still quite a few Obikin fics in there! Obi-Wan ships are always going to be my ships, thought, because I still love seeing that man in Situations.
I still wasnāt keeping track of additional tags, and I probably wonāt at this point, because itās just too much extra work. I know my own reading habits well enough to know what they would be anyway. I also published my first fic in over six months (yay me!) which felt great, because Iāve been in a massive writing slump for ages.
Fics Read: 142 Words Read: 3,644,439 Top Fandom: Star Wars (133 fics) Top Ship/s: Quiobi, Bobadin, Jangobi (28 fics/27 fics/27 fics) Top Rating: E (79 fics) Most Read Day: Feb 8 (16 fics)
Total Fics Read (2025): 426 Total Words Read (2025): 8,534,919

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Star Wars - All Media Types Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Obi-Wan Kenobi/Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi/Anakin Skywalker Characters: Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi Additional Tags: Character Study, Hallucinations, Ambiguous Relationships Summary:
Obi-Wan is not the only one who has nightmares. He is not the only one who is haunted by the ghost of his past.
the thing i love about ewanās acting is his eyes.
eyes are a big thing that i pay attention to when watching a movie.
example: if the character/actor is on screen im looking mostly at the eyes, not the background or set, costumes, etc. --the eyes.
and every film that iāve watched so far with ewan in it, whether he play a gay person or straight, heās always looking at the lover with those blue eyes that convey so much love and softness. it makes you want to believe that the two actors are actually married in real life, or that the characters really do indeed exist as lovers.
in star wars episode lll, we can see the hurt in obi-wanās body language but also the eyes. the betrayalā¦the grievingā¦the-everything!! all these overwhelming emotions clash together for obi-wan, and ewan plays them perfectly.
in halston (which if you havenāt watched yet you definitely should!!) ewan plays the trauma and the clinginess of halston so well, showing that he doesnāt want to let go of the man who is draining him in almost every way.
in the obi-wan kenobi series, ewan portrays the lost, grieving former jedi master so very well. we can see how leia slowly brings him back to the light, and how by the end, he finally laughs for the first time in 10 yrs. he becomes more confident, regaining strength in the Force, and finding qui-gon to guide him on the rest of his journey.
(btw just finished the series for the 2nd time yesterday!!)
Ewan McGregors performance in birds of prey was literally soooo enlightened I don't get why people hated it
Okay weird poll time!
So growing up my mom was severely disabled and for various reasons did not wear makeup. That also means she did not teach me how to apply it myself, and no older woman in my life taught me either or even brought it up at all, and as this was before I had reliable access to the internet(and I was a tomboy), I just...never sought out the info myself, so I just never learned. And I've always wondered like...is this something that is normally taught by idk someone else, or does everyone just learn to do it by themselves?
So yeah, my question is:
People who wear makeup, or people who have been/are expected to wear it even if you don't now, how did you learn to apply it?
my mother taught me
my father taught me
extended family (woman) taught me
extended family (other gender) taught me
a friend (woman/girl) taught me
a friend (other gender) taught me
self taught with guidance from magazines/books/youtube/ect.
completely self taught with no guidance (trial and error)
a mentor/family friend/adult you look up to but aren't related to (woman)
mentor/family friend/adult you look up to but aren't related to (other gender)
other(pls explain)
see results
(*forgot siblings and cousins, just put those under extended family, sorry T-T)
Additionally, was it something you had a choice about, or did whoever taught you tell you that you had to learn and start wearing it? Also was it something you wanted to do anyway? I was a tomboy and I'm butch so I didn't really like, wait excitedly until I was old enough to wear real makeup and then beg anyone to buy me some/teach me, and when I did start to "want" to it was mostly out of a desire to fit in with other women/be respected and I was terrible at it and it made me feel awful(that was dysphoria, I just didn't know) and eventually I gave up.
But yeah, I've never really seen anyone talk about this, so I'm really curious as to how people start wearing makeup since from my perspective at one point none of my friends were wearing it and then boom they all were and they were good at it and I was just standing there like "is someone supposed to teach me this or...?" and I never figured it out.
Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Star Wars - All Media Types Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi Characters: Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Original Alien Character(s) Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, Mpreg | Male Pregnancy, Unplanned Pregnancy, Childbirth, Missions Gone Wrong, Obi-Wan Kenobi Has a Vagina, Vaginal Sex, Fluff and Smut, Domestic Fluff, Light Angst, Surprise Childbirth in the Middle of a Mission Fic, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Acting as Anakin's Surrogate Parents, BAMF Obi-Wan Kenobi Summary:
On a protection detail gone wrong, Obi-Wan discovers an incredibly inconvenient fact about the current state of his health.
-
"Qui-Gon," Obi-Wan says through gritted teeth, gripping his lightsabre tightly in both hands as he glares down the few pirates still blocking their access to the cockpit. Behind them, he can see the door cracked open ever-so-slightly, one of Anakinās eyes glinting in the gap, watching the fight cautiously. "I'm going to have a baby."
Qui-Gon shoots him an incredulous look as he comes to stand shoulder to shoulder with Obi-Wan now that they only have blaster fire to contend with, keeping the TyāLacin covered behind them. "I don't think this is the most appropriate place for this discussion, darling," he replies, a little terse and a lot winded. āIām glad you want that with me, but now is ratherā"
Obi-Wan shakes his head, swinging his sabre to deflect a blaster bolt that had been rudely fired straight at his head. "You misunderstand, alpha mine," he grunts, dropping a hand from his sabre to his stomach with a flushed wince. His leggings are uncomfortably wet now. "I'm going to have a baby. Right now."
My gift for the Quiobi Secret Valentine 2025! What better way to introduce yourself to a new fandom than with almost thirty thousand words of omegaverse cryptic pregnancy...

thinking again about TvTropes and how itās genuinely such an amazing resource for learning the mechanics of storytelling, honestly more so than a lot of formally taught literature classes
reasons for this:
ļæ¼basically TvTropes breaks down stories mechanically, using a perspective thatās notā¦ABOUT mechanics. Another way I like to put it, is that itās an inductive, instead of deductive, approach to analyzing storytelling.
like in a literature or writing class youāre learning the elements that are part of the basic functioning of a story, so, character, plot, setting, et cetera. Youāre learning the things that make a story a story, and why. Like, you learn what setting is, what defines it, and work from there to what makes it effective, and the range of ways it can be effective.
hereās the thing, though: everyone has some intuitive understanding of how stories work. if we didnāt, we couldnātā¦understand stories.
TvTropesās approach is bottom-up instead of top-down: instead of trying to exhaustively explore the broad, general elements of story, it identifies very small, specific elements, and explores the absolute shit out of how they fit, what they do, where they go, how they work.
Every TvTropes article is basically, āHere is a piece of a story that is part of many different stories. You have probably seen it before, but if not, here is a list of stories that use it, where it is, and what itās doing in those stories. Here are some things it does. Here is why it is functionally different than other, similar story pieces. Here is some background on its origins and how audiences respond to it.ā
all of this is BRILLIANT for a lot of reasons. one of the major ones is that the site has long lists of media that utilizes any given trope, ranging from classic literature to cartoons to video games to advertisements. the Iliad and Adventure Time ARE different things, but they are MADE OF the same stuff. And being able to study dozens of examples of a trope in action teaches you to see the common thread in what the trope does and why its specific characteristics let it do that
I love TvTropes because a great, renowned work of literature and a shitty, derivative YA novel will appear on the same list, because theyāre Made Of The Same Stuff. And breaking down that mental barrier between them is good on its own for developing a mechanical understanding of storytelling.
But also? I think one of the biggest blessings of TvTropesās commitment to cataloguing examples of tropes regardless of their āmeritā or literary value or whateverā¦is that we get to see the full range of effectiveness or ineffectiveness of storytelling tools. Like, this is how you see what makes one book good and another book crappy. Tropes are Tools, and when you observe how a master craftsman uses a tool vs. a novice, you can break down not only what the tool is most effective for but how it is best used.
In fact? There are trope pages devoted to what happens when storytelling tools just unilaterally fail. e.g. Narm is when creators intend something to be frightening, but audiences find it hilarious instead.
On that note, TvTropes is also great in that its analysis of stories is very grounded in authors, audiences, and culture; itās not solely focused on in-story elements. A lot of the trope pages are categories for audience responses to tropes, or for real-world occurrences that affected the storytelling, or just the human failings that creep into storytelling and affect it, like Early Installment Weirdness. There are categories for censorship-driven storytelling decisions. There are ālineagesā of tropes that show how storytelling has changed over time, and how audience responses change as culture changes. Tropes like Draco in Leather Pants or Narm are catalogued because the audience reaction to a story is as much a part of that storyāthe story of that story?āas the ācanon.ā
like, storytelling is inextricable from context. itās inextricable from how big the writersā budget was, and how accepting of homophobia the audience was, and what was acceptable to be shown on film at the time. Tropes beget other tropes, one trope is exchanged for another, they are all linked. A Dead Horse Trope becomes an Undead Horse Trope, and sometimes it was a Dead Unicorn Trope all along. What was this work responding to? And all works are responding to something, whether they know it or not
An incomplete list of really useful or interesting reads from TvTropes.
please note that yes many of these are concepts that exist elsewhere and a few are even taught in fiction writing classes but TvTropes just does an amazing job at displaying the range of things that can be done with them
legitimately so much of the terminology I use to talk about storytelling, and even think about it in my own head, i learned about from TvTropes
Willing Suspension of Disbelief
Watsonian vs. Doylist
Trope Tropes, for all the ways tropes are used, deconstructed, subverted, and played with.
The Oldest Ones in the Book, which is basically my favorite thing on the entire Internet
Punk Punk, for -punk subgenres
Sliding Scale of Silliness vs. Seriousness, Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism
The Weird Al Effect is a fun one
Chekhovās Gun, Chekhovās Boomerang, Chekhovās Skill, and further variations
Law of Conservation of Detail
Law of Conservation of Normality
Anthropic Principle
Word of God, Death of the Author
Sliding Scale of Fourth Wall Hardness
Mohs Scale of Science Fiction Hardness
Genre Savvy
Flashbacks and Chronology breaks down all the ways you can handle chronology in storytelling
Show, Donāt Tell is a very good breakdown of what is showing, what is telling, and how both can be used effectively.
Lampshade Hanging
Noodle Incident is just fun imo
Genre Title Grab Bag
Fridge Horror
Rule of Cool, and also Cool of Rule
The Smurfette Principle
The Hays Code - not a trope but a very good breakdown of how the Hays Code affected storytelling in film
this is just a really short list of examples I encourage people who write or otherwise create stories to browse around on this site itās so useful
Informed Attribute is one of the ones I reference most often as an editor.Ā
Theory of Narrative Causality is one of my personal favorites, because it's kind of fun when a story acknowledges that things are happening in the story because that's what makes it a good story.
Also Applied Phlebotinum, because sometimes you don't need to know how something works, it just does, and that's all that matters for the purposes of the narrative.
When I was active on TV Tropes in the early days, I summed it up as "crowd-sourced literary analysis."
(There are a few pages I started on there, though most of them have been revised so many times that very little of my original content is left.)
