rewatched superstore recently to show my partner and oh my god i forgot just how great it is.
like- perfectly paralleled scenes, incredibly well done character developments (especially with the side characters!!! no character is left unexplained!we truly do get to know everyone!!), an amazing balance of humor and seriousness, and just such a great idea for a show. a group of unlikely coworkers learning to get along if they want to survive the hellish corporate landscape that is retail, and you actually get to see all of them grow and settle into themselves and we even GET THEIR HAPPY ENDING? for every single character!! really i just wanna take a moment for the epilogue itself. BEST epilogue you could have given this show. watching everyone find their place and still remain connected to those they confided in through a shared struggle? that’s real humanity. there is nothing that communicates the real core of humanity more than coworkers. people you barely know and have no real reason to care about, but you protect them, because it’s the right thing to do, and you know that ultimately what we’re fighting is bigger than any of us, and the only way to fight it is together. that’s why this show works. it highlights the most mundane and overlooked parts of society that we don’t consider in our daily lives. those essential workers, the stockers who put out your favorite groceries each day, managers who put themselves on the line for their employees, even just associates trying to get through one more shift. it’s all so human. the connections are genuine, the struggles are all real things that our store workers around us deal with all the time, i’ve never found a more empathy-provoking series. i sob at mateo storyline, i get giddy watching amy & jonah’s / dina & garrett’s arcs, i feel so proud of cheyenne’s growth, i burst with love for glenn and how he cares for everyone, i relive the joy of this show every. single. time i watch it. it’s all done so gracefully and i will forever despise NBC for pulling the plug on maybe one of the realest shows they’ve ever put out.
cloud 9 isn’t just a store, its a family of disadvantaged citizens who all just want to make it to pay day, and maybe goof off a little along the way. and thats what makes it perfect.
