I saw everyone on twitter tearing Emma Watson apart for saying sheāsĀ self - partneredĀ instead of single and decided to watch her interview for British Vogue to know what the hell was she trying to say with that. I was very surprised to find a 30 minute video in which amongst other things she talks about the following:
She felt undeserving when she was appointed as UN Women goodwill ambassador and sought out Gloria Steinem to learn about feminist activism.
She thinks the criticism she received for being a white feminist was useful because it made her educate herself.
She says thereās a desperate need to reform the education system in the UK to change the way they are taught the history of how Britain has been involved in foreign affairs and how they profited from slavery.
She felt anxious about approaching 30 because thereās a lot of pressure to have a husband and a baby by then and sheās still figuring her life out.
She was so young when she was casted in Harry Potter that she doesnāt remember much of her life before it and she went to therapy to deal with her issues with fame. She used to feel very guilty for being unhappy because she thought she should enjoy fame more.
The interviewer is a transgender woman and they discuss transgender issues for a while. Emma is in regular contact with a trans child which makes the topic of trans rights emotional for her because sheās very anxious for this kidās safety.
She talks about her role as Meg March in the new Little Women movie and defends that unlike what many people say choosing to be a wife and a mother doesnāt make Meg a less feminist character and quotes a line from the movie, āJust because my dreams are different than yours it doesnāt mean they are unimportant.ā Ā
She wishes more people would realize sheās not Hermione Granger but also understands why they want to see that in her because Hermione is a symbol for her too.
She used to think she could never be happy without a partner and now that she has learnt to navigate that better and is genuinely happy single sheās started to think of herself as self - partnered in contrast to the time when she thought of herself as single = lonely.
Every media outlet decided to focus in an out of context quote from the three minutes she talked about her dating life when the actual interview had a lot of depth and way more important things were discussed. Iām sad and angry but not surprised.

why don't people in zombie apocalypse stories ever just wear suits of armor? you think any zombie is gonna get their shitty rotting jaws through this?
I'm gonna rip and tear my way through the zombie apocalypse completely unharmed because none of the undead hoards will be able to get through my plate mail
everyone else is like "oh we gotta stay inside the most secure places possible and never leave" and I'll be storming through the wastelands in my bloodstained suit of armor, blasting the Doom (2016) OST and plowing my way through waves of the undead. one of them tries to bite me but his shitty rotting teeth don't even leave a dent in my armor before I turn his head into paste. I'll be unstoppable until I die of dehydration or something like an idiot
this goes along with my other pet peeve about zombie apocalypse stories, namely: why does no one ever think to ride a bike?Ā
bikes are quiet- if the zombies react to loud noises, they wonāt hear you on a bike the way they might hear you in a car. bikes donāt need gas, meaning you wonāt be stranded if you run out. bikes are much, much easier to maintain than a car- thereās no computer that can short out, no fiddly engine bits that could kill you if you mess with them wrong. you can learn how to maintain a bike with a couple weeksā worth of classes. almost every adult knows how to ride a bike, and without cars on the road, itād be much safer to do.Ā

my FAVORITE tropes compiled thanks to some suggestions from others
a character gets a sick burn and doesnāt realize it immediately, at some point later thereās justĀ āHEY WAIT A MINUTEā
the double take. this oneās an oldie but a goodie
the injured character makes the killing shot that saves everyone else in a dangerous situation
a character who isnāt speaking is doing something weird in the background, itās subtle and never acknowledged itās just there for those who notice it (pulling another character out of something they got stuck in, making a huge sandwich, etc)
the beleaguered assistant inches away from smacking their boss
āquick act naturalā
in that vein, the leader character was just in a shouting match with someone and when they come back the rest of the team scrambles to look like they werenāt listening at the door
never forget:Ā āheās standing right behind me isnāt heā
When a character mentions a normal past event and someone else mentions an absurd detail (āDonāt you remember what happened last time you went to the dentist?āĀ āThose deaths were nothing to do with meā)Ā
Multiple characters banding together to lie about somethingĀ
Characters being split up for questioning
Really stoic characters briefly becoming happy, freaking everyone out
āI think that went well!ā *Distant explosion*
-āquick act naturalā *everyone scrambles to do completely random shit that looks anything but natural*
Always a good one:
- Character A is talking, saying something like āItās not like anybody would ever be so stupid to do that, rightā
*scene changes, Character B is shown doing exactly that stupid thing*
Consider also:
- Character A telling the rest of the cast toĀ ārelax, I have a foolproof planā and then scene immediately changes to show all the cast fleeing for their lives after the failure of the Definitely-Not-A-Plan-Let-Alone-A-Foolproof-One.
- The stoic/sensible character breaking character to do something Completely Reckless and Dumb and then only realizing later that the usually Reckless and Dumb character is rubbing off on them-oh-no-.
Character A:Ā āI will absolutely not do that thing. Under no circumstances can you make me do the thing, it is a stupid thing and I will not do itā Cut to shot of Character A doing the thingĀ
I made a birthday card for our graphic designer at work and I'm so proud of it, its the ugliest and worst designed thing ever and its beautiful
And you're just not gonna show it?
Oh yeah here u go lol
This speaks for itself and I love it

So a few months ago I asked this girl out. She said she couldn't because she was bisexual and I of course said that this doesn't matter to me. Then she clarified that she means that she is attracted to girls only from July to December and if I wanted to we could meet up in July. I thought she was messing with me but she did call me two weeks ago and we have been dating ever since. And I checked her social media and yeah she only dates girls for half an year. I am baffled. Have you heard of this?
Okay look. Stephanie Meyer contributed four (4) cool things to the contemporary fantasy genre, which I shall now list here in the hopes of getting it out of my system. In descending order of importance:
1. Writing a story about a girl who wants something. Plot driven by a womanās (non-vilified) desire. Truly dreadful execution but still a good idea, sort of a literary incarnation of the āhe a little confused but he got the spiritā meme.
2. The fact that when Bella becomes a vampire she can still breathe but āthereās no relief tied to the actionā which I remember verbatim because it fucking slapped. The idea of human physical sensations being partially defined by our mortality and the sensations still exist after you become undead but your experience of them is fundamentally different because you no longer need any of it? Extremely cool. The closest Meyer came to taking an interesting stance on vampires being dead.
3. Werewolves are immortal but they can literally stop whenever they want. That shitās hilarious. Curse of immortality who.
4. The fact that vampires donāt sleep or get tired so their communally-raised baby doesnāt have a crib because she is always in someoneās arms. That was extremely cute and thereās a different, better book contained somewhere in that specific concept.
5. Depression being represented by like 6 blank chapters titled with months.
