Stargate Atlantis Background Character my beloved: Marine With Glasses
I wanted to do a shout-out to the guy for a while, but a discussion from ribbonnpurple and sga-mcshep-4ever inspired me to finally make the jump.
Kudos to Marine with (often glasses), unnamed, played by D. Harlan Cutshall.
He was one of the very few surviving OG Marines, seen here at the left and without glasses:
He always seems businesslike and serious, but he is also dedicated to the base's safety, and not only that. He is involved in many Atlantis scenes as a guard, as part of special teams too, but he also travels offworld on important missions. He is seen many times throughout the 5 seasons. When you start noticing him, you realise he is everywhere.
For example, he was sent to search for Bug John, even if he wasn't part of the team that found him (left, with the glasses):
He was sent to escort the gang offworld to what could have been McKay's last trip in The Shrine (left, with the glasses):
Here he is, on an important security detail, guarding Elizabeth in Adrift (left, with the glasses):
He also escorted Woolsey on his date with Todd (ok maybe not a date) in First Contact (for once at the center, with the glasses):
Some of my favourite scenes with him are when he is part of Lorne's gang of scientist-trackers in Tabula Rasa, which is hilarious, to begin with. Hunting down confused scientists and stunning them while gobbling down stimulants *chef's kiss*
He has an actual moment of being the tech guy for their gang, manning some computer for them, a sign that he is not only cool and a steady Marine despite the amnesia, but also that he has some smarts (left, with the glasses):
Another mission I loved him in was when he was part of the strike team in Coup d'État.
First, because Sheppard says he picked an elite team for this raid, meaning the military commander personally values Marine With Glasses. And second, because it is the raid where they wear the funny plastic glasses, and then get all gassed like losers because it was a trap. He is protecting McKay and Sheppard, on the left, with protective eyewear instead of regular glasses!
I think I have always found it nice to have a trained and competent Marine wear glasses. Very often, in the media, glasses are treated as a costume or a joke, worn only by comedic nerds or literature snobs. So, having a warrior type casually rocking glasses in most of his scenes, that was refreshing!
Marine With Glasses, we value your work! <3 Keep our Alantis family safe!
