every time i think about overwatch's orientalism i go a lil more insane. 5 japanese characters all of which are tied to a very stereotypical mythologized version of japan. they're some of the few explicitly magical characters. all of them are part of clans and lineages and shit. every map that takes place in japan is an orientalist fairy land with idyllic old looking villages with shrines and gates and cobblestone and zero utility poles in sight. this game is so incredibly racist

what's interesting to me is that no other asian characters get this treatment. mei is a climate scientist or something. diva is a gamer. lifeweaver and symmetra are scientist. something about japan specifically makes the overwatch devs get a boner for the image of a permanently ancient magical other, japanese characters are simply not allowed to be contemporary

the online identity and gimmick-ifying of autism is so odd. I'm diagnosed with autism and yet I barely identify with any stuff I see about it anymore. It feels like autism is being rebranded as the Silly Guy Disorder that gives you smart and beautiful hyperspecific interests. it's not that I mind silly jokes or being lighthearted about being autistic- but when the entire social movement is based around marketing us this way, I just can't help but feel isolated from it. it feels like I'm not the right kind of autistic. I'm not marketable and digestible to common audiences, and therefore I am discarded by the movement in the name of progress and acceptance. it feels foul.

sorry but once you notice how often ppl use a southern accent as shorthand for being unintelligent you can never unsee it. classism is baked so deeply and why are you acting like anyone who talks the way my grandfather talks is stupid.

irritating as fuck when people get mad at Black people existing in premodern historical fiction/fantasy media. like first of all, you're racist. and second of all, you are acting as though Black people didn't exist in premodern Europe which is simply false. especially when we're talking about the Mediterranean, like what the fuck do you people think is along the southern half of the Mediterranean Ocean?? everyone's on boats, there are GOING to be interactions with Black people in Northern Africa, and there are GOING to be Black people in Mediterranean Europe. stop being stupid. your imagined homogeneous white European past is not historical reality, get over it you massive losers
