as an exclusive show fan (tho i watched it only one time lfg) and an avid fic reader (i know my understanding of the story is incomplete and flawed probably according to some) i was wondering if in the books ilya calls shane “sweetheart”?
i keep reading it in fics and it irks me? idk how to explain it, maybe its a culture/language thing (im not American/english first speaker) - maybe its canon he says it idk but its such a mouthful…maybe its something thats really common in american culture and since he learned english in america its in his vocabulary ???
hm yeah i just searched the books and yes ilya does use the word sweetheart which i agree isn’t very ilya and also is kinda hard to pronounce in a (fake) russian accent. we can just chalk this one up to a reid-ism in that i feel like everyone has different pet names they think are the best/sexiest and that’s just personal preference. if i had to assign ilya an english pet name to use i would go with baby or angel or kitten but that’s just kind of what’s easiest to say in his accent. but sweetheart in american english would be a totally normal pet name to use with a partner, it just has kind of a flair like it’s kinda…. retro or something. it’s sort of 40s or 80s or vintage somehow idk. it’s a little patronizing maybe but in kind of a hot way. it involves a leather jacket. however it’s not an ilya word.
I agree with this so strongly that I had to make up a headcanon that Ilya anxiously watches the Hollander parents all the time to try to pick up Clues for how to be Worthy of Love. he hears them say "sweetheart" to Shane and to each other so he's like "got it, this is how people who deserve love would behave" and starts calling Shane "sweetheart" even though it's kind of a difficult cluster of consonants.
