SAT Math Prep Videos 2018/2019

What will you cover? See the chart below (download the pdf). We will be covering the beginner version of how to tackle each type of problem. Students will be making a highlighted process, task sheet for every lesson as a reference.

What are your credentials and How do you Teach? See bottom of this post for student sample of the types of notes they take. I lead them threw these step by step so they have a mental LOG of how to do each type of problem. I have  B.S. Civil Engineering and have taught various levels of Algebra at several colleges as an adjunct instructor. I also have 20+ years of SAT tutoring, High School teaching, and Homeschooling my own children. See more about me here.

Will there be homework? NO. But I will recommend other tools to practice on the side if you choose. (Such as Khan Academy)

When is it? It will be LIVE on selected Thursdays from 3-4pm PST (Seattle) from September through May. If we have more than 10 students I will probably stop recording at 4pm and then continue with those on LIVE for 15-30 more minutes as needed.

What if I miss a lesson? You will be given a link to access ALL of the years videos on my Youtube Account (Look for the SAT Math Prep Channel). I plan on uploading them the day after each LIVE lesson. They will be unlisted/private videos only available to those who pay. The first video will be PUBLIC for anyone to view if you are undecided. But please note, once the school year begins please allow 2-7 days for me to get you hooked up to the online process. (I work outside the home and homeschool as well!)

How do I pay? I am setting up an online payment page with information on a password protected page here. Contact me at [email protected] if you would like to purchase the class via LIVE feed. Please type “SAT MATH REQUEST” in the Subject line.

Can I join during the year? Yes. You will have access to ALL previously missed LIVE videos and will be able to participate in ALL future videos for the semester. It is the SAME price per semester no matter when you join. The benefit to joining the live videos is the direct interaction and “recall” practice as well as the extra time afterwards.

How much does it cost?  $250 per semester (16 sessions in the Fall and 16 sessions in the Spring = $500 for the entire year of 32 lessons). Roughly $15/session

When is Payment Due for ALL LIVE class participation? Fall by Sept 1, 2018. Spring by Jan 1, 2019.

(For info on another series I’m purchasing see the bottom of this post. Diana Waring’s History CD’s come highly recommended by other homeschool moms for older students as a supplement to SOTW and/or any history class. )

Can’t say enough about SOTW’s  (Story of the World)  approach to learning history. I absolutely LOVE the way you start each lesson off with a simple map so the kids know where to catalogue the story they are about to hear.  This series takes you around the world with various peoples and cultures through time.

I highly recommend checking out the recommended reading books on a weekly basis. I used to put them on hold two weeks in advance and then leave the library with a cart on rollers (literally) with 20-40 books at a time. The earlier the series – the younger the books (SOTW book 1 is geared for elementary children and has hundreds of recommended picture books). My kiddos really enjoyed our nightly picture book reading. As the series progresses they tend to be more mature. By the 4th book in the Series they recommend short novels. Having said this, I would still encourage students of all ages to listen to the CD’s – even middle school or high school. The stories are fascinating!

You will notice I am missing the Hardback and CD’s for Book 1. (I lent them out.)

Each SOTW Year includes four parts:

Activity Book  (includes booklist, activity pages, crafts, review questions, answers, maps and instructions)

Test Book (This is simply a book with questions and answers. For the younger years I didn’t use these. The activity books come with simple questions and answers for review.)

My Natural Remedy for Anxiety

Here is a picture of my “arsenal” I keep on hand at ALL times

(Note: you will see a bottle of Unisom. This is the ONLY medication I take on a daily basis. The rest are vitamins, herbs, or essential oils…and chocolate in low doses. The two items on the right, circled in red, are for women only.)

I explained in an earlier post how I define Worry, Anxiety, and Panic attacks. Now I will attempt to relay as much information as I can about my personal treatment. I am not doctor but, as an engineer, I have researched all of these thoroughly and I didn’t see any inherent risks in taking these together. Most are pretty benign. Of  course everyone should always check with a health professional before changing their supplements etc… I’m sure you know the spiel. I have tried all three teas, but tend to stick with the chamomile. Sometimes I will add the bedtime tea, but I do not like the flavor of the Stress Relief one (it has Kava which is supposed to help). To each his own! Before I get to writing a short novel below I want to show you my favorite two books to read for comfort during these times:

Here is what I do during these Phases of anxiety:

  No Symptoms of Anxiety for Several Months:

DO’s:

I go about my normal life and remain aware of my stress levels – trying to not activate my Fight or Flight response repeatedly.

I drink Dr. Pepper, Yerba Mate, Beer and Wine… 

I go to action movies. Loud, and even scary!

I take vitamin D in the morning, B12 after lunch, Fish oil, and magnesium (when I remember, 1-3 times a week)

I eat Chocolate Daily (this has nothing to do with my anxiety – just the fact that I love it)

I use Progessance Plus Serum and take a Unisom at bedtime – Daily.

DONT’s:

Live in repeated periods of agitation, worry or stress. (Example below)

For example: car #1 breaks down. You worry and have to make last minute plans to get everyone to a safe place and appointments etc… Then the next day car #2 breaks down. You have to rearrange everything. Deal with upset kids because they are missing their playdates etc… Then your refrigerator breaks. The important thing I have to do in these types of situations is stop between each “catastrophe” (which actually happens quite often at my house!) and take deep breaths. I have to remember that everything will be okay. All is well with my soul. As it says in Psalm 46:1-3 

1 God is our refuge and strength,     an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way     and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam     and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]

Mild Symptoms Once or Twice a Week:

DO’s:

I go about my normal life and remain aware of my stress levels – trying to not activate my Fight or Flight response repeatedly.

I go to the movies, but only for Romantic Comedies.

I take vitamin D in the morning, B12 after lunch, Fish oil, and magnesium (daily)

I take (1) Gaba Sooth and (1) Ashwaganda Daily (whenever I feel some stress)

I rub Bergamot Essential Oil on my wrists and take a few drops orally whenever I feel agitated.

I make it a point to do 15 minutes of mild exercise first thing in the morning. Brisk Walk. NOT over 60% hear rate (here is a great chart!). Just enough to breath deeply while my heart rate is up to remind my body that I am okay even when my blood pressure is up and running. I listen to soothing music while I walk and concentrate on slow breathing and regulating my pulse.

I eat Chocolate Daily (chocolate has anti-oxidents I need as well as serotonin boosters).

I keep Rescue Remedy pastilles and drops in my purse. I don’t notice it helps if i do it once (my kids do when they take one) so I do it every 15 minutes for 2 hours. Then I seem to be able to breath better. Not sure if this is psychosomatic (from concentrating!) or if it is really helping. But it makes me feel better… 

I use Progessance Plus Serum and take a Unisom at bedtime – Daily. I take this daily for my hormone health (no more ovarian cysts) but progesterone also helps fight adrenal fatigue.

I spend 20 minutes doing breathing techniques to tell my diaphragm I am NOT running from a lion! I sit quietly in a space where I can relax (usually lying down or reclined in a chair) and take a deep belly breath inwards, hold it for the same amount of time it took me to inhale, then spend twice as much time “hissing” it out (like a snake sound). The combo I use is 4-4-8. The numbers could be 5-5-10, 3-3-6, etc…  I do one of these controlled breaths and then breath regularly a few times. Repeat. Just remember to only do one every so often. If you do them one after the other you will get light headed! Remember trying to blow up too many balloons as a kid?! yeah, you don’t want to do that.

Looking for a Basic (and Rugged) Chromebook?

My girls have had theirs for 18 months – awesome choice!

REVIEW of : ASUS Chromebook C202SA-YS02 11.6″ Ruggedized and Water Resistant Design with 180 Degree (Intel Celeron 4 GB, 16GB eMMC, Dark Blue, Silver)

This brand usually has a great sale several times a year. I purchased mine around Thanksgiving for $169. Hard to beat!

PROS:

Inexpensive

Rugged – LOVE the rubber edges and frame

Lays flat open – 180 degrees – for screen sharing

Easy to Navigate and run basic programs and several websites at a time

My kids used Google sheets and Google Docs instead of Excel and Word – so that saved me a pretty penny!

Inexpensive carrying bag and keyboard cover options 😍

CONS:

Not that great for interactive, high speed gaming. But that’s not what chromebooks are for…

Not a lot of internal memory. But that, yet again, is not what Chromebooks are known for… We have SD cards in the slot for extra memory

Sun Hats UPF 50!

UPF 50 Sun Hats!

Our favorite brand of Sun Hats for over 12 years

We LOVE this brand of Sun Hats! They are made by SunDay Afternoons.  The two on the far right (light pink and purple) my girls have worn since they were ages 2 and 4.. We still keep them for pool swimming on not-too-sunny days. Their new ones are in the middle – the Women’s “Sundancer” version. We love these because they have a nice opening for ponytails.

The men’s hats are the “Adventure” version. They all perform well – wet or dry.  We crumple ours into our backpack at Disney 😍 

These sun hats really hold up to time. The fact my girls still get some protection from the ones they’ve had since they were toddlers speaks volumes. Now they have the Women’s ones. But we will never get rid of their toddler ones!

Sun Block Swim Tops

Looking for an Alternative to Putting on Sunscreen?

Of course I ALWAYS put Sunscreen on faces and hands but this is a nice alternative for shoulder, arms and backs. Especially for all day affairs at the beach or pool! 

Now, before I begin, I have to admit that I didn’t get to do a TRUE Texas sun field test because I currently live in the Seattle area (their idea of a “hot” sun is 80 degrees – LOL). However, the girls did spend all day in the direct sun (without clouds) with these nice tops on and they only got the slightest amount of pink! My kiddos really like these. They have tried other versions (like the ones from Lands End) but they were all too heavy, stretched out, and dragged in the water. These are light and allow them to swim without too much drag. HOPE THIS HELPS! All I have to do now is simply say, “Do we need to talk about how the Fall of Rome led to the Dark Ages?” If you do this enough – the threat is REAL. 😈

Saxon 8/7 is a transition book. Basically? It’s a REVIEW of Saxon 7/6 (with more in depth problems) as well as a prep for Pre-Algebra. My girls both skipped this altogether and did fine (you can see this in the accelerated column above). If your child struggles with math you might want to have them do this math for 7th grade.

  Those of you out there who want to move over to Saxon Math always ask me which version to get. 

It became a bit complicated when Saxon sold out (yes, “sold out” – I’m sure John Saxon was rolling over in his grave) to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt around 2004. HMH is a common core, public school curriculum publisher.  Needless to say their versions are atrocious, in my opinion. For example, I flipped though their/HMH Algebra I and is has TWICE as many pages as the original. No thank you. Needless to say… their way of over explaining things is terrible for children. My daughter took one look at it (I took her to a used book store and asked her opinion) and she almost cried. She begged me not to make her do that one. (I never intended on doing so – I just wanted a student’s opinion.)

I posted pics above of the latest versions from from the traditional Saxon Publishers (before they became common-core-ized by HMH).

I recommend getting the Homeschool Kit. You NEED the Solutions Manual. Note that the test answers and solutions are not always in the Solutions Manual. So if you get the “Homeschool kit” you should be good to go. Otherwise you have to order each item separately and might not get all of the pieces you realize you need later. I don’t believe these latest version are available in hard cover. Only soft Cover. As you see from the picture above I spiraled two of them because it was too difficult for my girls to keep the pages open etc… You can typically do this at a copy store for around $5.

Simply pour powdered Sugar into a bowl with a dash of cinnamon or cocoa/cacao powder. Then stir in water slowly with a fork until the desired consistency! Dip Donuts into the glaze and set on rack to harden 🤩

Coconut Carrot Cake

Einkorn Coconut Carrot Cake Recipe

Casein Free

Prep Time: 20 Minutes (more if you make frosting and have to shave your own carrots)

Bake Time: 45 Minutes

Eat Time: Depends!

  Cake Ingredients:

1 1/2 Cup Coconut Oil (Regular or Butter Flavor)

1 Cup Regular Sugar

1 Cup Brown Sugar

4 Eggs

1/2 teaspoon Ginger

1 tsp Cinnamon 

4 Cups Shredded Carrots

3 Cups Einkorn Flour

1 TBS Baking Powder

1 tsp Salt

Frosting Ingredients:

Coconut Cream (from the Can – pictured below in Amazon Links)

Powdered Sugar

Frosting Directions: 

Scoop out as much cream from the top of the can as you can. Pour in Powdered sugar and blend until it’s the consistency you want. There aren’t any exact measurements here. Sorry! Each Can is different and I don’t want you to waste some by measuring. You can get more cream out of the can if you keep it refrigerated before you open it. I probably use around 3-4 cups of powdered sugar?

Directions:

Combine melted Coconut oil,  Sugar, Cinnamon, and Ginger. Blend for 1 minute.

Add 4 eggs

Blend on high until it looks like this! Yes, it should eventually look like this. Make sure you are using the whisk attachment.

Blend in 2 Cups of the Carrots.

Add the Einkorn Flour, Salt, and Baking Powder and GENTLY blend for only short spurts (stopping to clean sides often). You don’t want to blend the Einkorn Flour too much or it will crumble when you bake. You have to be super gentle with it… It should look like this.

Pour in the rest of the Carrots (2 Cups) and fold with a Spatula.

Place in 9” X 13” Baking Dish (I use stone).  Bake in 375F Preheated Oven for 45 Minutes.
