βI donβt like this song because I canβt relate to itβ skill issue. Iβm mad at my husband I love my girlfriend Iβm a lone cowboy Iβm growing old Iβm growing up Iβm depressed I love my friends Iβm perpetually horny Iβm drunk at the club I love my husband again
this is exactly what Iβm talking about
One of my favorite tricks for designing alien species/cultures is to take a real animal with an interesting lifecycle and think about what that biology would translate to if they had human intelligence
Example: silk moths as a base species
Because the moths themselves donβt eat and only live long enough to mate and then starve to death, the entire culture is made up of children and adolescents. The older children raise the younger ones, with families being made up of hatchmates from different years.
Because molts and eventual transformation into a short lived adult happen on a set schedule, families have a cycleβ when your oldest set of siblings cocoon to become adults, you wait at the mating grounds and try to adopt their newborns after they pass. If that fails, you take any βorphansβ you can find.
Because death and birth are nearly simultaneous, they have a religion based around reincarnation, and infants with markings similar to a parent are often given their name. Claiming the offspring of a beloved family member is vitally important, because you want to be able to protect their soul and keep them close.
Because itβs hard to track the offspring of your male family members, there are sometimes major fights when a family sees an infant with familiar markings in another familyβs clutch.
Between mating seasons, their culture is extremely food-oriented, because everyone is growing and silkworms eat nigh constantly. They spend most of their lives outdoors but sleep and shelter from bad weather in large family dwellings made from wood and the remains of the silk cocoons of prior generations.
everyone is really vibing with the silkworm aliens I see
I do think itβs interesting how the novel Dracula is meant to be a modern setting from its perspective. Itβs very much that genre of story about an ancient fantasy archetype finding itself in a modern setting, complete with the rules-lawyering that often comes with modern parodies (that isnβt to say the stories of Olde didnβt have fun with loopholes either though).
Except Dracula is a story that plays itself straight. The vampire himself is not stupid. Heβs possibly the oldest vampire of all which means he upgraded from animal instinct and mindless echoes of past memories to someone whoβs regained his critical thinking skills. The story begins because heβs already adapted to how the modern world works now by hiring a solicitor who understands modern laws.
He knows now that he doesnβt have to march into London with an army like he used to; He can just buy property and the laws of London are forced to respect that. Similarly heβs already experimented in and discovered loopholes to vampire rules and limitations; Vampires are bound by the permission of owners so he simply uses his solicitor to buy and own a bunch of properties. If he needs to be invited in, Dracula hypnotizes someone to let him in.
Vampires need to return to their grave every dusk/dawn (whichever comes sooner), which causes their coffin to act as an anchor that limits how far from it they can travel? Dracula simply rations the earth of his grave into fifty coffins and spreads them across London so his range becomes exponentially larger.
All of these things make the story almost come across as a deconstruction and it might just be! Itβs just that Dracula the novel became such a trendsetter that people nowadays see it as playing things fully straight. It almost feels as if the novel is written with the idea that readers have a basic understanding of vampires and their rules, so part of the thrill comes in the revelation of how the titular vampire is working around these rules. Likewise Iβve heard it used to be a trope in English literature for a traveler to visit some foreign land with a monster and escape by going home. But here the foreign aspect of the story is just the first (and final) arc; The monsterβs plan hinges on coming to the UK itself!
So yeah. Dracula isnβt stupid and he reflects the idea that people of the past had just as common sense as the rest of us, they just had access to less/inaccurate knowledge and things worked differently back then. Dracula would be likeβ¦ That bit of someone showing a medieval peasant a meme as they comprehend it perfectly and arenβt even wowed by the Doritos. If Dracula was set in the 21st century heβd probably understand social media well enough to become an influencer if he wanted to, though the issue of being invisible in cameras wouldnβt help.

Fun fact: my siblingβs partner, while idly talking about sports, was like, βyou know whatβs a WEIRD athlete nobody ever talks about? JOCKEYS, theyβre all four feet tall and jacked and psychotic and they fight people. And theyβre all Irish for some reason? My dad used to go to a jockey bar in Californiaβ
And my sibling was like βoh hey; theyβre writing a book about a jockeyβ
And their partner was like βand theyβre all Irish or from the Dominican Republic????? Why??β
And I was like βoh yeah - the weight limit has to be half the weight of the average American male so by numbers Americans donβt really ride races any more, the top flat jockeys in the USA are from Latin America. In Ireland and the UK thereβs a lot of Irish and the Irish go everywhere for economic reasons and get purposefully imported to Japan and-β
And the partner was like βand theyβre all four feet tall and crazy!β
And I was like βand theyβre all crazy! The most injured athletes!! The athletes with no off season! The most concussed athletes! And unlike football and hockey players, they donβt get brain damage from it.β
My sibling was like, βthey donβt?β
And I was like, βwell no!! They donβt!! The most resilient and fastest-healing athletes for some reason. Of course, two of them die on live TV every year β-β
βTWO OF THEM DIE EVERY YEAR?β
βYeah well thatβs just the ones that die IN RACES, more of them drop dead in exercise riding but dw about itβ¦β
My siblingβs partner broke in, in a tone of revelation; βand nobody notices them! They only see the horse!!!β
Anyway that was weird and fun . There are audiences for my bullshit everywhere I guess
AND TONNES OF THEM ARE MINCΓIRS!!!!! PRIDE FOR OUR SIBLINGS ON THE TOBER!!!!
AND TONNES OF THEM ARE (turns around and translates: Irish, an lucht siΓΊil ("the walking people"), also known by outsiders, more frequently in the USA, as Irish Travellers; often written down in UK/IRE as the Pavee; indigenous travelling people of the British Isles, NOT ROMANI, part of the ethnic Travelling community - need not be actively travelling to identify) MINCΓIRS. WHO also form a huge number of the exercise riders and grooms of Ireland and the UK, operating under harsh and poorly paid working conditions. Remember that jockeys are athletes who are classified around the world as freelance agricultural workers, whose phenomenal horse skills and willingness to risk their lives do not negate a four-hundred-year-long history of invisibility; snatched up by rich owners for being small and horse-gifted; occasionally winning great glory. And remember the grooms and exercise riders and stable staff - referred to as Lads and sometimes as Lasses or perhaps Stable People - upon whose strength a multibillionpound Sport of Royalty and Billionaires is built. It is VERY common for them to be marginalised by ethnicity as well.
The Irish used to be short and now they are very average -- the average Irish man was 5'6" in 1914 and the average Irish man today is 5'10". So the Irish jockey thing may be a holdover from bygone days (most of the top jockeys these days are Latino). This is almost certainly down to improved nutrition/calorie density in foods over this time.
I think a lot of the 'size' discourse is out of date at this point -- we think of the Japanese as short; they aren't even in the top 25 shortest countries by average, which is dominated by South Asian, Latin American, Southeast Asian, and African countries.
Well, itβs closer to what I said: βthe top flat jockeys in the USA are Latin American.β But the USA is dreary at horse racing, generally. Latin Americans arenβt the top/best in the world. Theyβre a healthy percentage of the best - 6 of the top 20 at the moment, working out to 30% - but the top five flat jockeys on the planet at this precise moment are one Australian, two Frenchmen and two Brits.
However, you did ask someone who knows about this. The Irish presence in flat and jump racing around the world is indeed less about Irish people being short as a nation, because they arenβt particularly. Itβs much, much more about the national fondness for flat and jump racing - donβt forget about jump racing - the long history of breeding and training, and the resulting production of racing dynasties. Racing dynasties are strongly generational and influential, with families tending to produce clusters of people who are especially suitable for the sport.
Ireland and the United Kingdom, for four hundred years the breeding grounds of the Thoroughbred, tend to foster racing dynasties of people as well as horses. Prosperous and effective jockeys retire to other areas of the industry, marrying other horsepeople, producing crops of children, and creating familial networks radiating through the industry. And then the children do it too.
Some of the things passed down through these lineages are clear genetic tendencies to smaller frames, which is noticeable. (Oddly, a lot of generational jockeys seem to be born prematurely as well.) Much of it is familial temperament/obsession: people who cannot comprehend NOT riding horses. Quite a lot is the ability to comfortably normalise and tolerate the working conditions, because you were brought up within them. And a significant amount is that itβs much easier to be a fabulous rider if you have trained for it since infancy. If your grandfather put you up on his racehorses before you could walk, you and your siblings and cousins will have a decent advantage at riding horses professionally.
You are not looking for βthe nation with the smallest people in the world,β you are looking for βpeople who want the job.β The Japanese jockey academy, the only pathway to being a race-rider in Japan, graduated no new jockeys in 2026. Some of that is lack of interest in the profession, some of it is lack of desire to live by the particularly punitive lifestyle standards imposed on jockeys in Japan, and probably a little bit is that naturally smaller people are fairly rare and not interested. The Irish racing academy at Kildare generates 30 jockeys a year, plus the dozens of training yard apprentices and pony-racing students being βhome-trainedβ in the profession. You have to be willing and able. And desire and ability run in families.
Which is, in fact, what my book is about! Itβs about a racing dynasty. My jockeyposting π and Killie tags have a lot of resources.
worst part of being an adult is how often youre forced to nag. you Have to be annoying or youre never getting anything done. which is unfortunate considering how common it is to teach kids to never nag and be annoying ever
a professional i am paying money doesnt show up w zero communication and IM the one who has to feel guilty for having to call him and ask whats going on. because when i was a little kid i would get yelled at for nagging. joke world
do you ever want to say some bullshit

"yeah i know it's bad for the environment but like so many things are so i just use it anyway" COOL I'M GONNA BITE THROUGH THIS TABLE
Last night I couldn't sleep so I randomly watched The Truman Show for the first time ever and not to be such a girl who watched I Saw The TV Glow before The Truman Show but wow, got some real I Saw The TV Glow vibes
HOLY FUCK I FORGOT THE VILLAIN LIVES IN THE MOON IN BOTH MOVIES
"If it cannot break out of its shell, the chick will die without being born. We are the chick, the world is our egg. If we don't crack the world's shell, we will die without being born."
Also works well with the theory that Truman knows his world is fake from the start of the movie but is testing and seeing who around him can be trusted, because maybe they need to escape too! When he finally realizes that EVERYONE in his life, even his oldest friend, are in on the whole charade and are keeping him trapped, he finally resolves to leave by himself.
Like idk I think as someone who was told "there weren't any signs" that I was trans, and like yeah I spent years doing all I could to hide it, well idk it feels relatable

So horse world-building question:
If you have hoofed, sentient creatures (centaurs, fauns, etc.) do they wear horseshoes? Or are horseshoes a compromise between cost, effort in looking after the animal etc. Is there something "better" (in comfort, utility, fashion) that sentient creatures would prefer? Possibly also a metal thing that's nailed in, but different in some way?
Interesting! I'm no expert, of course, but here are some thoughts that may help you on your journey. Take what you can use and disregard what you can't!
Really wanted to make sure my stance on this one point was absolutely clear
Sure sure sure sure sure we all care a lot about natural hoof health. Are you free this weekend to look after Miles -
